Did you wear purple today?

I did, but not because I knew about this.....Purple is my favorite color, I wear it a lot. :) And my toes are painted purple right now. My girls did not wear purple, no one talked about this around here.

No purple, but I wore my butterfly scrubs. Butterflies are the symbol of hope, regeneration, and rebirth. Maybe that counts for something

I did!

First I heard of it was when my daughter came home from school today all disappointed that she'd forgotten to wear purple. She says she's right in there next year!

I thought it was just something her school was doing - I didn't realize it was bigger than that until I saw this thread.

And FWIW - I don't think the "I won't wear purple because bullying hurts everyone not just gays" argument holds water. Well, not unless those same people would also refuse to wear pink ribbons for breast cancer awareness (after all, cancer hurts lots more body parts than just breasts), or red on Fridays to support our troops (what about civilian employees of the military?), or any other sort of "awareness" campaign. If they opt out of them all, then I can understand. Some people just aren't joiners.

Me, I would have worn purple, if I'd known.

Nicely worded! :goodvibes

Am I the only mom whose teen son would not be caught dead in purple(or pink or light green)? He would never bully anyone; I raised him better than that, but I wasn't going to buy him a purple shirt to wear for one day, even if he would wear it. Besides, he told me last night at 9pm:rolleyes1.

Nope. I knew about it, but I don't like the idea of wearing a certain color because one group or another is bullied. We really should try to stop all bullying - but by highlighting the suicides of one group, it can create the impression that some victims matter more than others.

Wear purple to stop all bullying - and I am there.

I see your perspective but I feel differently. If you can't fix all things, it doesn't mean you shouldn't try to fix one thing. I think that is how humans have worked through the centuries. Identify what the pressing need is, address that & then move on to the next thing.

I would like to think that people who are being bullied about non-gay reasons did not look around today and feel their issue was somehow less important. I would hope they were encouraged that many, many people cause about bullying.

Today, it was about supporting teens who are LGBT. Think of what you what type bullying you would like to address tomorrow, select a colour and I will wear it! So will my husband & 5 children.

:goodvibes .....reminds me of the starfish story.

I didn't wear purple, because I didn't know about this until a student in my 3rd pd told me. He asked me to change my pen color (smart board) to purple, so I did. I wrote in purple the rest of the day, and the kids seemed happy with that.:hippie:

I did and so did DD. We live in a very small and very conservative town and i don't really care if others don't like the support we hopefully offered someone. I think what is going on with these poor kids is absolutely horrible!!

I did but I didn't hear about wearing purple until this afternoon. I put on a green shirt this morning and then managed to spill a flood of water on myself when I tried to make coffee and had to change. I just grabbed a shirt and it was one of the few purple ones I own. I figure that it must have been fate or karma or something! :thumbsup2

How come Facebook spread "tell what color your bra is" and "post where you put your purse" like wildfire but no mention of this at all? I have a pretty diverse group of friends, I am really surprised I didn't hear about it. I'd have made plans to do more stuff out of the house in my purple shirt! :)

I guess my point is that, I am worried that teen suicide will suddenly become an LGBT issue, as opposed to a general one. (Heck, the biggest risk factor right now in teen suicide is gender, but we tend not to look at suicide as a gendered issue.) Despite similar rates of occurance, and fairly similar mortaility rates, spending on breast cancer research dwarfs prostate cancer.

I don't see why we need a special color, or a special day, to worry about only a particular subset of teen suicides.

YMMV, of course.

I wore a purple sweater and DS (12) wore a purple Hurley shirt. He has been called gay slurs and says the kids use them everyday to belittle someone.

ITA and yes, I wore purple.

I had at least 4 people invite me to wear purple day. It was all over FB from what I saw :confused3
