Did you spend extra because of Hurricane Sandy?

Hi:
I like to think I'm always prepared but with so much notice I did go out and get additional supplies.

Filled both cars up with gas,
Paper products (last time I hated having a pile of dishes in my sink)
filled the tanks for the generator,
extra batteries,
extra water,
extra canned goods (soup etc.)
checked the propane tank so we can grill if need be
Also did plenty of baking and all the laundry/dishes are finished

What about you? We generally lose power for 3-7 days at a time so we don't stress or worry. Then again, we are NOT near the water! Hope everyone stays safe!

I don't think we spent extra money as the stuff we bought we use anyway. However, DH booked a hotel room for 2 nights for just in case. That might be were our extra spending goes.

We didn't lose power or have flooding issues with Irene so I am hopeful this time around too.

I did get gas in my car and buy a few extras at grocery store more in preparation for how long it will be before the stores get stocked than anything else.

Board games and craft supplies are out. Will charge all electronics tonight and see what happens.

Something the budget board will appreciate. We've been searching for D batteries. Dh finds some today but calla to see if he can buy them. They were not the brand he had a coupon for:rotfl2:

And yes honey buy them!

Love it, he's a true budget board husband!

In all seriousness, I hope you all safely weather the storm.

Nope, no extra money at all. I am always stocked up on water, canned goods, dry goods etc. My Dh follows prepper groups and was even asked to be on "Doomsday Preppers." :rotfl2: I haven't even food shopped since Monday, and there is nothing we need.

I am making/ canning applesauce today. Would have done this with or without the storm.

I did fill the bathtubs for flush/ washwater as our town had a major watermain break over the summer and I do worry our water will be compromised by this storm since permanent repairs have not been made.

ok so i needed a few batteries but was not sure if they big jumbo pack was a good idea. so i was in target with the mobs around me and grabbed a few packs of different brands, put them in my cart, and then took out my cell phone to calculate the cost per battery to make sure i was getting the best deal!:rotfl: i also grabbed a case of water at the door but then went back to grocery dept. to see if they had anything cheaper, they did so i swapped brands and was happy i got there before they ran out of the sale water.

i think the real budget buster would be if i did lose power for long enough i have to toss what is in my freezer.:scared1: i also thankfully have some extra vacation days to use so i get paid to sit at home for the next 2 days otherwise that would really bust my budget.

A few years ago (Houston) we had a hurricane threat like every couple weeks one summer

I worked the returns desk at Target. It was ridiculous.

buy buy buy water, flashlights, batteries, canned food.

return return return water, flashlights, batteries, canned food

(repeat, repeat, repeat)

What a shame. Just buy it once AND HOLD ONTO IT!!!!

Same here.

We were at Lowe's yesterday, getting a part for the generator. They had a sign saying no refunds on hurricane supplies.

People really returned water?

We just bought our first house and moved in at the beginning of this month, and a lot of stuff is still MIA so DH headed out this morning to buy C batteries, candles, a kerosene lamp and some small propane bottles. We lived next door to his grandparents before and they would just bring it over if something like this was in the forecast, but now we are on our own!

He was one of the lucky ones that got out early this morning, because now the local stores are out of everything! We needed this stuff anyway, but Sandy forced us to buy now.

We also had to buy a ladder (expensive!) and clean our leaf-filled gutters out in the rain this morning! But now we are ready!

We bought extra water and we needed bungie cords to secure stuff on the deck.

I did spend $7 on ice for the coolers. That is completely out of the norm for us.

Everything else we were pretty stocked with. I did splurge on some art supplies to keep DS amused and a magazine or two for me. (DH is on his own but I think he's charging his kindle.)

We should lose power around 10:30 tomorrow and have it back sometime Friday.

My freezer is full of frozen water. I'm going to fill all containers I can find and stick them in the fridge.

I'm cooking the last of the pershiables now so they can go in the cooler when the power goes.

We lost power in the 104 degree heat when the deracho hit. That was not pretty...

I agree - but do they reshelve it? If so... ewww...

nah....I always have food at home, snack shelves, cereal, some canned goods of one sort or another:thumbsup2 always keep a supply of jug water just in case all year round, have a supply shelf with lanterns (kerosene style, better oil though)
flashlights in drawer anyway.... just baked a bit extra in case the power goes out so the kids can have their cake and eat it too:rotfl2:
we have a propane campstove, so I can cook anything on that on the porch(we camp)
I have a woodstove if it snows, and I have cooked on that also (hello last October:rotfl:) We have a shelf full of books, and games, plus I gassed up the car. Should be ok, barring anything earthshaking (literally)
I have a habit of making sure we always have plenty of canned beans and tomatos, plus extra canned milk if we run out for long periods of time at the store....
Oh,maybe I'll make some more cookies...I like to be prepared:banana:

...also have car chargers for the cellphones, just in case too

Nope they did not reshelve it. It was either returned to the vendor (certain brands of water/food) or tossed.

Don't worry we will get another round of Halloween Candy come Nov 1 returned too

The only things we bought specifically because of the storm was 2 extra gallon bottles of water. We did fill up the gas tanks on both cars, but it's not something that will go to waste. We already had food, flashlights, batteries, etc.

:rotfl2: I bought extra nonperishable foods, extra water, extra batteries, and flashlights, but I'll just keep them in the cabinet in case we need them later in the winter for another storm. Isn't that a logical plan? Why would you bother to return all that stuff after every storm passes? What a pain!

Can someone explain to me why I need to buy a half a dozen flashlights every time there is a storm? My husband always buys lots of flashlights, and we have a couple places where we keep them and the extra batteries for storms. However, every time we need a flashlight or extra batteries, there are never any in there...the kids always take them to use, but then they never can seem to find them when I try to round them all up. I swear, someday I'm going to open a closet and there will be an avalanche of flashlights fall on top of me and squish me! :sad2:

We did- we live in a college apartment, though, and generally don't have too much food and drinks stockpiled, other than three gallons of water. None of it will go to waste, though, because we're college students- we eat a lot! We did buy extra flashlights and a first aid kit, but those are things we really needed anyway. We decided against buying ice and have been freezing bags of water and making tons of ice all day to shove in the fridge and keep in the freezer.

Ok, brace yourself.

I stopped in the Korean Deli and a guy walked in behind me, holding a flashlight.

He asked the guy behind the counter if he had any D batteries. As I was standing at the counter and blocking his view, I turned and gestured at the large multi-pack of Ds open on the counter. The guy was all 'yay!'

The guy behind the counter asked how many he wanted - guy said 'two.'

"Five dollars."

Demand? Meet supply. :lmao:

Yep. I stopped at Target after work today and picked up a 2 liter of Coke and a bag of doritos. Big time Sandy prep. :lmao:
