I have been without a computer for the last two days.Windows stopped recognizing my hard drive(has anyone ever heard of such a thing!!!!!)

Anyway I am back $1000 poorer had to buy a new computer befor they carted me off to the funny farm.Sad isn't it!!!!

I know how you feel - right after Christmas DS got Encarta. I tried to install it and suddenly the computer stopped booting into windows. It would freeze at the windows screen. Had to buy a new computer with Windows XP on it (yuck!) But I was in serious withdrawal.

Mal - just wanted to let you know this (and anyone else w/Win XP) ...

we bought a new computer recently with WinXP and had to go to the Microsoft site and install a patch on our computer. Forgive me because I don't understand much of the technical stuff, but I believe if you didn't do this it was easy for others to somehow overtake your computer. I know that isn't much of an explanation, but all you have to do is go to their website and there is a link on the right side of the page under DOWNLOADS. It is easy to do and well worth taking the time to do. I hope this helps!

.... but I hope you saved the old one. You can buy a new 20gig hard drive for about $75.00 and pay some neighborhood kid $20.00 to format it for you and you'd have a spare.

I am just waiting on the Disk from compaq and am going to try to reformat the old one again then if that does not work then I am going to buy a new hard drive but will probably get a 40 gig drive.


keep your fingers crossed....that all goes well.Then if it does DS can get rid of hisa 1.6 gig puter and have my old one.

Welcome Back ~ I may be joining you in the land of downed computers. Mine is on crash mode, with all of the problems with hard drive messages, but I've got to make it last as long as possible (if that's possible) I think they program these things to die after the warranty is over ~ sigh.
