Looking for any input from those who have been to law school. My older DS is graduating from college & scored well on the practice LSAT, so he is looking into law schools. I've already heard from Skuttle (thanks, skuttle!). Just want to hear from those who have been or are in law school. Tell me what is great (or not-so-great) about your school. PM me if you'd rather! Thanks.

Hofstra University School of Law, class of '84 (ok, I'm ancient.)

it's going to be tougher to get into law school in the next year or so than it was a few years ago. whenever there's a downturn in the economy, the law school classses fill up.

it's an interesting and rewrading profession. but not as lucrative as it used to be.

what I liked best about my law school experience was the clinical programs --- something that was innovative when I was a student but is more commonplace now. you get to see proactical applications instead of focusing on theory and "hypotheticasl' with no "correct" answer.

DH went to NYU Law School. We've got hugh loans to pay off now, but I think it's all worth it. He's in a competitive market, working with top notch people.

One thing though... really really long hours (at least in NYC law firms). You have to really like the work to go through with your career.

I work a 9 to 5 at a major insurance company. couldn't stand the billable hours business at a firm.

I'm an oldie too - went to law school 84-87 and am ALMOST done paying off my student loans. Went to a small school in Michigan and went trimesters, kind of part-time so I could work full time while I went to school. I enjoyed law school, although it was very hard. It was quite challenging. I never imagined what I would really do as my career - I had a totally different plan. But I really love what I do. I'm a prosecutor and have been for the last 13-1/2 years. The thing that is so great about being a lawyer is that there are so many areas to practice in - so depending on what else she likes to do, she can probably find a wonderfully rewarding career. I love kids....so I work with them in my practice as a prosecutor.
Have you picked a school? Or an area of the country?
If I can be of any help, please feel free to pm me.

Where's DS graduating from? And what part of the country is he looking at? That may help with law school recommendations.

I'm an attorney (younger than Briar Rose and older than Skuttle). I'm also an adjunct professor at a local law school. From what I see of my students, I think it's only gotten more competative since I went to law school (both getting in and getting good grades once you're in). If DS has specific questions, ask away.

I'm in law school now. I'm just one final away from finishing up my first year. :bounce:

The school I go is one of the few that has a night program so many of my classmates and I work for law firms during the day. We're getting the practical experience plus making those important networking connections while getting our education.
