Did you do anything special when your kids got their drivers license? I would love to do something for DS, just looking for ideas.

Got him a car. I don't think that is what you are looking for though! ;)

Most likely the best thing to allow him to do is to drive around town for the day! Maybe take a friend out for fast food?

Give him his first insurance bill? If you can pull it up online, print it out on nice cardstock, apply special border, tie up w/a nice ribbon. :):lovestruc

Paid for their car insurance and provided cars to drive until they were about 22(graduated college in one case and working and attending school for the other). I think those are more than adequate. Why would you need to get a kid something for getting his/her license? Isn't getting the license enough?

We didn't even let our boys drive alone until they'd had the license for several months and definitely no friends (most states have laws about it under age 18 anyway). To this day, neither has had a ticket and the one accident each has had was in no way their fault. So, I guess the best gift we gave them was delaying a little gratification so they have low insurance rates to this day.

The day I got my license, I went straight to the flower shop in my town and sent my mom flowers for putting up with me during the 6 long months that I had my permit!

Your kid should be doing something for you, not the other way around!!!!!

But if you want to do something nice, why not take him to the store and pick up special car washing/detailing materials for him to take great care of his car? Or go to your local car wash and get him a detailing package to use when he wants to!

Or let him get a personalized license plate!

My mom jetted off on vacation the day after I got my license. She bought me car, but it hadn't come in yet so I had my brother's 5-speed car sitting in the drive-way that I didn't know how to drive. I learned quickly, needless to say.

Other then that, she gave me the talk about being safe, if I was driving after 9:00 and got pulled over (in NY, that was/is a restriction on under 18 drivers) I was to tell the officer I was getting milk for her and if he needed to talk to her he could call and that the first ticket I got she would pay for (I got one 3 days later for unsafe start), after that, I was on my own. Needless to say I didn't get another ticket until I was 19 and on my own completely.

I don't think you owe your kid anything in particular for getting his/her license.

Both my girls got a new key ring with their own copy of the car keys on it - made them feel grown up but was in-expensive!

What a magical day for your child and a scary day for parent. Before the test, I went shopping for a cute key chain. I had copies made for the car keys. I made a card, and in the card was some words to live by listed on the side; Never return the car empty. Better to arrive late than never. Keep the car clean. You will have a chance to be part of the conversation when you get to the destination. etc.

When daughter went for the test, I was waiting in the parking lot for her to return. She got out of the car, nodded she had passed, and I threw confetti at her,:cheer2: gave her the card and the gift. It was a wonderful moment that she tells her friends about, :love:and they wished their parents made a production out of it for them too. She drove to my mothers house and from there went to visit her cousin at the restaurant he works at. That night, I suggested she call a friend and meet at the mall. She took the car and was out for a few hours. A splendid day!

I would never give a teen a car, but that is me. I have seen what happens to these kids when they have their own wheels, and it is scary. I do allow my daughter to use my car as often as she wants/needs. She takes good care of it, fills the tank, and is a very responsible kid. But, she is still a kid and she needs the boundaries and that's my job, to set and guard those boundaries.

Because it is a momentous occasion in his life! I was thinking of a meaningful thing to do for him. My parents gave me a key ring with the date inscribed on the key ring and a set of keys. It was very special to me, and that is why I am looking for ideas.

thanks! My parents did that for me, and it was very special too.

I love what you did with the confetti! I really like that idea of "words to live by"! I will certainly make him a card with that. Thanks for the great idea.

I don't remember :lmao::lmao: I think I just let him drive the car alone. I remember when I got my license and what a big deal it was to drive alone for the first time. I had an orthodontist appointment and drove there. See, I remember that. :lmao:

Yea - started paying his insurance and gas money.

We haven't allowed him to get a job & he has basically become the chauffer for himself & his brother.

My mom sent me to the grocery store for some staples and then I drove my sister to dance class :rotfl2:
