Did we feel the $2K difference? CSR vs Poly

We stayed at Coronado Springs for the first time 9/12-9/19. We have been blessed to have stayed at the Polynesian for our previous 3 trips and LOVED it. But life threw us some financial curveballs this year so the Poly wasn't in the budget even with free dining. So we were faced with either cancel our annual family WDW vacation or try a moderate for the first time. The package difference was about $2000. I did a lot of research and decided to try a moderate rather than go without. ;) We have stayed at 2 values without my son (ASMovies~ loved it and Pop Century~ didn't love it) but we knew the size of the rooms and the bus sytem wouldn't work for our son.
After reading many reviews and doing a LOT of research, we chose CSR. The key factors for us was the great reviews of the bus system and the childrens play area.
I must preface my review with the fact that we do have a little one that requires some extra special circumstances. It was myself, DH, DD5 and DS4. My 4 year old son is autistic so our vacation must include certain special considerations. Staying at a monorail resort was wonderful but we felt, now that he is officially out of a stroller. (actually refuses to be in one :sad2: ) we thought we could give the bus system a try.
I really really wanted to love this resort. I committed myself to approaching this trip as a new, exciting experience and not simply comparing a deluxe to a moderate. So here are my feelings based on my families experience.
When we first arrived I did notice how beautiful the resort was..but it was missing the 'Disney' atmosphere (which may be a plus for some!). Even the Values have a fun Disney feel ..but it honestly had a 'convention' hotel feel.
Check in went very quickly...no problems there. We had requested Cabanas when we made our reservations, confirmed a week before and when we checked in. More importantly we asked that we NOT be placed in the previous smoking room. My son has major sensory issues and we were concerned. My DH told them even if it meant not being in Cabanas we could not be in a previous smoking room. We went off the the park for the day as our room was not ready. When we returned later that night, we walked into our room and it was like walking into an ashtray. I couldn't believe how bad it was! We called the front desk and within 15 minutes that had another room for us (Cabanas 8B) but we had to roll our 2 kids and our 3 suitcases in the rain to our new room. :guilty: The new room was great! Incredible difference in the air quality. We found it spacious and clean. We were comfortable there for the remainder of our stay.

The other issue we had was that I seriously underestimated the size of this resort. It really is HUGE. Especially when you have a 4 & 5 year old. There is a LOT of walking involved to get around this resort. We did see golf carts but not as often as we would have liked. We bought the refillable mugs but to grab a diet coke at the end of the day or coffee first thing in the morning, it involved a 25 minute round trip walk. A couple of mornings we thought we would grab a quick breakfast at the Pepper Market but the line to get in there was down the hall...so we gave up on that early on.
We tried the Maya Grill for dinner one night and it was easily the worst meal (servie and food) that we have ever experienced.

We were close to the Dig Site and my dd5 really enjoyed the water slide and the pool very much. Our problem with the main pool had nothing to do with the resort, rather my lack of researching, but worth mentioning in case it helps someone else. The 'shallow' end of the main pool was over my 4 year olds head. Again, because of sensory issues, he wouldn't wear the life vest. If he swam on the stairs he was fine. But if he wanted to swim beyond that we had to be a few inches from him. Clearly a zero entry pool would have worked better for us. Again, NOT a resort issue, but worth mentioning if you have little ones who are too big for the 'kiddie' area but not strong enough swimmers to be in a pool that is too deep.

This was our first time being 100% dependant on the bus system. Bus stop #4 was right outside our room. The bus system worked very efficiently. Never waited for a bus very long and the busses were never crowded. However, we definately over-estimated my sons ability to handle the buses. It added too much waiting and too much extra walking to our vacation. For our son, when he is done his is DONE. We definately missed the luxury of the monorail. The bus system added an extra challenge to our vacation that took a toll on us. The resort was so big, that when we arrived back to our CSR from the parks, depending on the crowds, it was still another 15-20 minutes before we were at our bus stop. If you have little ones, or need to be in and out of the parks quickly, even the most efficient bus system doesn't compare to the convience of the monorail.

And the last 2 mornings of our vacation we had NO hot water in our shower.:sad2:

For us, CSR definately lacked the Disney Magical feel. Coupled with the missing luxury of convience, this resort just didn't work for our family. We took advantage of the bounceback program and booked our Sept 2008 for the Polynesian. :)

Hope this resort review helps some others!

Thanks for your thoughtful report.

You might consider WL for a trip. It is just a boat ride away from MK and the resort is so beautiful and very compact. It is also less expensive than the other deluxe resorts.

Thank you for your well thoughtout review. It clearly expresses how this resort didn't fit your family's needs without "trashing" the resort itself. Very respectful.

Thank you.

We stayed at WL last month, and while it is a lovely resort we found the transportation to be HORRIBLE. It was ludicrous how really, really bad the transportation was. It was so bad I e-mailed WDW about it. If my DS was autistic and was tired there is no way I could handle WL transport.

Yes, the boat goes directly to MK from WL. Between 8:30 AM and 3 PM. Not good if you have an 8 AM ADR.:headache: The bus to Epcot went to Ft. Wilderness first. The bus coming back from AK went to GF first. It took us 55 minutes to get to DTD. NOTHING was direct, and you never knew where all you would stop before you got where you needed to go. Figuring transport time was impossible because it was a complete crap shoot! Based exclusively on how frustrated we were with the bus/boat situation we won't go back to WL.

It's funny that you actually mention it. We had dinner at the Whispering Canyon one night and we loved the feel of the resort. The pool area looked great..we even asked to see a room after dinner and my kids fell in love with the bunkbeds! We were all set to make WL one of our top choices for booking our next vacation through the bounceback, but then when it was time to return the the Magic Kingdom, we waited on the dock for a boat for about 20-30 minutes! I told my husband it certainly could have been a fluke, or an off night..but with my son we just couldn't take the chance. And because we had to book our next stay before we checked out, I couldn't research the resort to find out about the transportation...so we went with what we know and felt comfortable with. :)

I agree the transportation at the WL is lacking. We waited and waited for the TTC bus to come so we could go there and then hop on the monorail to go to dinner at the poly. The boat is nice but when we went in AUg last year during a hurricane there was no way I was going to wait for the boat. I thought the buses would be better. Oh well....we are still staying there this Oct. I have just learned what to expect on the buses. We will be doing the boat to the MK this time come rain or shine. :)

Thank you for your detailed comparision. I recently came back from ten days, originally booked at Yacht Club, and we requested a move to Wilderness Lodge because YC lacked the "feel" for us! So I definitely appreciate hearing from you!

The size of CSR is what has kept us from trying it. And thank you also for your pool review - it will help someone for sure!!

Poly!! terrific!!

Too bad you did not try the bus from the WL to the MK! That is the way to go if you're interested in speed/time and not the ambiance of the boat (which we love, but not if we're in a hurry). The bus from the WL to the MK is direct - it does NOT terminate at the TTC as it used to do - and takes FOUR minutes. If you time it right, it's even faster than the monorail.

In late August, we had great luck and didn't wait more than 5 minutes for any bus to the MK. In terms of the return trip, the WL bus stop is #1 at the MK, which means it is closest to the exit. I think many people either don't know about the bus, or don't think to take it, because on two occasions we exited after Wishes and walked on the bus - while the line for the boat was huge.

I agree that bus service From the WL to the other parks is annoying, but I don't think the service from the GF or Poly is direct, either. I know I would be really frosted paying GF prices and not being able to get on a bus to MGM (I think that was the park - I witnessed this in 2003) because it was filled with WL guests.

We solved this problem (pricey, I know), by renting a car and driving to every park but the MK. We need a car anyway since we started going to Universal on our Orlando trips.

Sorry to hear that you didn't care for CSR. We have an autistic son also and the ONLY way for us to do WDW is by renting a car. Unfortunately there have been many occasions where we had to leave a park rather quickly and waiting for any type of Disney transportation, no matter how efficient it may be, would be a disaster waiting to happen. I do have to menton that when we did FW Cabins he really did enjoy the boat ride to MK. However, at the end of the evening those boats are PACKED!!

I just returned Wed. from 4 nights at the WL and found the boat transportration fine. Never waited more than 10 minutes for a boat. In the evenings, your stop at the FWL first before going to the MK so it takes a bit longer. The bus is fast and the way to go if you want to get to the MK fast.

I didnt find CSR worked for us either, it is a beautiful place but its just not for us.

OP, thank you for the non judgemental review. Your feelings for CSR echoed ours for POFQ, to us it was a nightmare. The transportation was horrid (again totally dependant on the buses, plus we were sharing with POR) and we also had the added discomfort of no on site TS restaurant. I hadactually thought about trying CSR for a lower budget trip soeday but now will be rethinking it. Sorry it didn't work out for you.

Nice report. I found CSR to be non-Disney feeling as well. I've stayed there a few times and each time I just didn't like it. No magic to me. If you have to stay Mod again might I suggest CBR or POR. POR is smaller than CSR and CBR but great theming though POFQ is smaller and reminds me of home. POFQ has a great pool and who can resist beignets in the morning. CBR is big but it's really nice and the room size is bigger than the other mods plus they have a killer food court. I find it to be the best of the Mods.

Thanks for the review. We are monorail resort devotees. We are on the verge of being 'priced out' of the monorail resorts and are probably going to try some other options. I will recommend that you try renting a car. I think it would have made a big difference in your CSR stay. We have always stayed on the monorail and still love the freedom of having a rental car. We use it almost every day. We really dislike having to depend on bus transportation.

I felt the total opposite about CSR. CSR was full of magic, just not in the same way as the values which are 24/7 Disney. I felt as if I was in Mexico without having to leave the country. Relaxing by the pool was totally awesome!

The resort is very beautiful and all the CM's were extremely helpful. The Pepper Market was awesome as was the transportation. The Pepper Market had something for everyone in our party to like.

The things you mention sound more like things out of control of the resort and on your sons special needs. CSR can't help if someone doesn't follow the rules and smokes in a room. That can happen at any resort.

The pool not being zero entry is a given at any of the mods. The depth is standard for all resorts. It's only like 3 and a half feet in the shallow end.

The lack of Disney magic is dependent on each guest, we loved it and though Disney did a great job on CSR. Only the values give you Disney all the time. I like the time away from the parks and to relax at CSR. The conventions to hinder us one bit.

Transportation was great at CSR. Even at the monorail resorts you will have to use buses to some of the parks so your son would have had the same experience at the deluxe resorts. And the monorail to Epcot can not be easy when you have to switch at TTC.

So to me, it seems as your issues are more because of your sons special needs and would be the same at any resort.

Thanks for your thoughtful review. It's hard to anticipate how certain things will affect a vacation experience, and you make some very good points about the two resorts.

WHAT?!?!?!? No hot water in the shower!!! Did you complain and what happened!! This would have been a big deal for me.

Thanks for your review! We haven't tried CSR because it is a convention resort, and I wondered about the lack of the Disney feeling.

I do have a question, and I don't mean to be snide, I'm just curious. When you stay at the Poly (or any monorail resort, for that matter), what do you do for transportation to MGM and AK? Everyone says the monorail resorts are better because of the monorail, but on the several occasions we've had dinner at a monorail resort, we've found the bus service TERRIBLE.

I hope your 2008 trip is better!

If you are staying at the Poly, esp. in one of the buildings to the right of the GCH, you can easily walk to the TTC and catch the direct monorail to Epcot. So, you don't have to switch at the TTC. That is just one of the reasons that makes the Poly great. Even if you don't stay there it is no big deal to switch to the Epcot monorail, just down one ramp and back up another, very easy.
