I have not seen a map that shows exactly where CC is, and I am wondering if the huuricane did any damage. I know there was some storm damage there a coulpe of years ago. Our cruise will have two stops at CC due to power boat races at Key West, so....

We were on CC on the Friday that Charley hit Florida. I'm happy to report the Island is as beautiful as ever and we had a warm, :sunny: breezy day there!:Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Thanks! After I posted I found a map showing CC to be way out East near the Bahamas, right?

Here's an issue where severel people get confused or are not specific enough as the above coordinates are not enough to find the location.

I tried the above coordinates an initially wound up in some place in India.

There is unfortunately many ways to specify logitude and latitude and the different ways often get mixed. And when I did a google search to find more specifics, everyone quoted the location differently, and even when I finished interpeting what they ment, they didn't agree.

See, coordinates are specified in degrees, minutes, and seconds. But usually, some part of the measurments start using decimal places.

So the above coordinates were really...

26 degrees, 5 minutes north latatude (or +26.08 decimal)
77 degrees, 32 minues west longitude (or -77.53 decimal)

(It was that missing negative sign that put me in India)

I can give a more specific number when I get home and look into my GPS data (I recorded a waypoint where the ship docks), but in the mean time, the above coordinates are accurate to go to mapquest and enter a location by longitute/latitude and see where the island is located relative to the other main Bahama Islands. Of course even if I find more accurate data, still won't matter on MapQuest because they don't store detailed data of all various Bahama islands.

We were at Castaway Cay on Saturday and it was absolutely beautiful!!!!! It was perfect weather, the water was very calm and very blue and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect day! We sailed on August 12 and got back yesterday and had very calm seas and beautiful weather the whole time. Never saw a hint of Hurricane Charley until we on our way to the airport - then we saw some of the damage that had been done.

WMiller, Our first sailing was Feb. 2000 and it was right after the Nov. 99 hurricane......the dock at CC was destroyed by the hurricane and you could still see the damage.....Last year while in St. Maarteen we did the Golden Eagle catamaran and the island we sailed to still had the buildings knocked down....

Absolutely beautiful in Nassau and Castaway Cay. Actually there were 7 ships in Nassau the day the Wonder was there and that was due to the hurricane. All the other ships were diverted to Nassau instead of their itinerary. Jackie the Cruise Director on the Wonder told us in the Returning Guest Party on 8/14. She said there should have only been 2 ships in Nassau that day. The day after when we were at CC, there were 8 ships in Nassau, so the ships do re-route you if you are in harms way. The safest place to be is on a ship as they can divert to anywhere the hurricane is not going. We had 3 great days on the ship.

Hi Lampskies,

So I guess you were able to visit CC anyway?

I found on a map where it is in the Bahamas. I guess I am a nerd, but I like to see where the heck I am going! In case I have to swim for land, I want to know what direction to head! ;)

Down here (South East Texas) watching out for hurricanes is a regular summer occurrence. I have rode out a quite a few in my lifetime, and I will be very happy to not experience one from a ship, thank you very much!

Is there dock space for 8 ships in Nassau?!
Or were they just floating out in the harbor?

We were at CC on Friday and it was gorgeous. It was very windy though and the captain had a time docking. However, he did it and we enjoyed the day. Many of the excursions were cancelled due to the winds (i.e. parasailing, banana boat, water cycles, sail boats, etc). We still enjoyed a perfect day.

The nearest thing on a regular map that you would be able to find is Grand Cayman, CC is a very small island almost straight south.

7 ships can fit in Nassau slips. When one left at 3 p.m. on Friday, another ship came in 1/2 hour after it. There was the Wonder, 4 Carnival ships, 1 Norwegian Ship and 1 Royal Caribbean Ship. Then when the Norwegian left a Celebrity came in. It was total caotic and it was our day at sea as we had already been to Nassau and we did not get off the ship. Was at the pool from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. It was heaven in that beautiful sunshine.

I was also at CC on Saturday after Charlie hit Florida - the day was beautiful and there were crystal clear skies for most of it. No evidence of damage anywhere. The only thing it affected was that many of the excursions from Castaway Cay were cancelled - I assume due to high waves.

Mark, you meant Grand Bahama not Grand Cayman, correct? If not, I have no idea were we stopped on the last full day since we sailed north of Cuba on the way!! :)
