and we had to send in our childrens' certified adoption decrees (you need these if final birth certificates are issued a year after your child's birth). I did not know this, and am now re-ordering certified copies of these documents "just in case" from our state. Know they will come back with our passports, but... I like to be prepared for the unexpected. If they are returned as expected, we'll have 4 weeks left until we leave for our cruise.

Just an FYI!

Barbara (PS We had to make an appointment at one local post office for passport processing and they had a 2 week waiting period. We found a post office that accepted walk-ins. Luckily, our family of four had all paperwork and checks completed prior, as well as our passport photos. It took us 10 minutes total. The family in front of us completed their forms at the window and took about 45 minutes total. There was quite a line behind us, and they close the window at 4 p.m. sharp according to the clerk. It was 3:50 p.m when we left. Oh yes, our children had to accompany us for the processing to occur.)

Mom2Belle&PeterPan - I just wanted to congratulate you on your adoption. It certainly is a magical feeling, isn't it? It is a pain to get birth certificates for adopted children here in California (but I do guess they need to be careful for confidentiality reasons). We have an extra just in case and also a pasport for our DS6. Enjoy your cruise. - Mike

Very sweet of you! Yes, aren't we lucky and blessed to have our dear children! They were indeed meant to be ours. I may have misconstrued the info. though...our children are now 13 and 9! But, I did still have to send in their adoption decrees for their passports.

Thanks again, and have a wonderful cruise with your family too!

Barbara

My partner and I have adopted two children in Massachusetts, and we're waiting for the court date to finalize the adoption of our third.

After the adoption is complete, the birth records at the state and city are updated with all the new information as of the birth date. They basically replace the original document with the new, post-adoption document. The new birth certificate lists both our names as "co-parent".

I always travel with their passports and birth certificates, even if it's just a domestic trip.

Thankfully, we got all the passports done before they implemented the requirement that the children had to be present to process the application-- what a nightmare that would have been!

Our DS6 gets two celebrations every year. His Bday in December and his legal adoption in September. We were extremely lucky to be there for the delivery and then being able to take Steven home the next day. The fears then began until the birth mother signed the Docs about three weeks after that (In California I believe thay have 30 days to sign the documents or can rescind at any time). Talk about three weeks of stressing out while we were still bonding. But like you said, it was meant to be. I do not remember us having to send our adoption decree for Steven as we just submitted his "original" birth certificate (Maybe my DW included it and I did not know but also I believe we received it before the 1 yr time limit you mention). We did however get a certified copy just in case the Passport agency lost his BC. - Mike

We just went to oir local County Courthouse and filled out the paper work and took the photos with us. At that time (mid 2002) the kids did not have to come with us. We did send all of the Birth Certificates with the applications and got them back before the Passports were received.

I was very nervous sending them off though....

Mike,

You sound like my dh with all your joy for your son! So glad you get to have the Disney magic with him and as a family. We picked up our son less than 24 hours after he was born. We found out that we had a daughter, and picked her up when she was 2 weeks old. I remember paging my dh with a 911 page, he was in a meeting with concerned co-workers, and then he found out we had a daughter!

Anyway, a poem to share with you, you may have seen it before:

"Not flesh of my flesh,
Nor bone of my bone,
yet still miraculously my own,
Never forget for a single minute,
that you did not grow under my heart,
But in it."

Happy Sailing with Pixie Dust your way!

Barbara

Hi Denise,

Just wanted to say "Thanks" for posting that you received your birth certificates back prior to receiving your passports. That is reassuring to me!
