Did I really do something all that unusual?

I had to go over to town today.. On my way there's this house - set quite a distance away from other homes on each side - that is decorated SO awesome for Halloween.. I mean these people really did a terrific job!

Anyhow - I had my camera with me because I wanted to get some photos of the fall foliage around here (it's at it's "'peak" now).. I thought it would be neat to have a photo of this house to include in my scrapbook of things in this area, so I went up and knocked on the door to get permission..

The woman was very friendly - said she had no problem with that at all - but seemed totally surprised that I would ask permission first..

I wouldn't have felt comfortable doing it without the owners permission - especially in this day and age where everything is shrouded with suspicion.. (I also know they have children because I see them outside playing in the summer - although they were in school today..)

So were my actions "odd" or not?? :confused3

I'm in the "it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission" crowd, and probably wouldn't have.

You're a wonderful example of a considerate person...I'll start taking lessons. :goodvibes

I don't think your actions were odd at all! You did the polite thing, which, in this day and age, might seem odd to some, but I think that asking permission was the courteous thing to do.

I also think you did the right thing and it wasn't odd. :thumbsup2 It would have been awkward and kind of creepy if they'd driven up and caught you taking a picture.

Yeah, you did a good thing. :) We drove by this little house in town that always has HUGE tacky decorations up and I slwoed down enough for DD to snap a photo. It was all decorated for halloween and on both sides of the front door there were one each of Obama and McCain. It was too funny to pass up. LOL There was no good place to pull into to ask and there was an older man sitting on the porch rocking. We flung our hands up and gave him a wave and he smiled and waved back and took the photo.
It was really a Kodak moment though!!

You did the polite thing.

Over the summer we had a lady who would slow down in front of our house a couple of times a week. I didn't know what to think. I finally figured out what she was doing when she rang the bell one day and asked if she could bring a carpenter over to look at our patio canopy because she admired it and wanted to have something like it.

I think it was very considerate of you. I would have appreciated you asking.

And then there's Google, who took pictures of all of our homes, made them available on the Internet and never asked our permission!!!

It was the polite thing to do. At least you won't carry around any guilt for having snapped the pic without permission.

This house is so awesome.. I just had to have a photo of it.. It's one of the best decorated homes for Halloween I have ever seen.. Not too much - not too little.. Absolutely perfect..:thumbsup2 Of course I made sure I told the owner that as well and she was just beaming.. :goodvibes

I'm not here in the winter, but I'll bet they do an awesome job for Christmas too! :)

I don't think you are odd, but it is very unexpected these days.:)
I had the same reaction several years ago, when I asked permission from one of my parent's neighbors to raid their yard for pinecones. The person was just amazed that I even asked! lol Of course they didn't mind, I think it saved them from raking them up.;)
So are you going to post a picture for us? ;)

I don't know how to post pictures.. :(

And of course I would have to go back and ask permission again.. I would never post photos of someone elses home - or photos of people (even family members) without permission..

If she was outside I would have asked but I wouldn't have knocked on her door to ask. I think that if you decorate like that you just expect pictures to be taken. I don't think it is so much lack of manners vs being "public domain" when you do something on that scale.
