Did I not follow protocol?

Something odd happened to me tonight while on VMK. Maybe, I don't understand how the quests in the player's rooms are played. Are they not open to everyone? Unless otherwise stating, I assume they are open to all. Anyway, in this particular room, I recognized some of the names as those from the VMK dis board. There was supposed to be a game, so I stood there wondering how to play the game. I was booted off and told not to return anytime soon.

I've been a member of the Diz Boards for a long time, but not with VMK. Anyway, I was just wondering if I did not follow protocol or what I did wrong. I think I'll just play the VMK quests after this.

no, you went into a room and if it was open to the public, there was no reason why you couldn't....

unless they wanted to open it to lets one of there friends friends to come in....

i really don't know, kinda sad...

Hi,

I have been on these boards for a few months and think that I have some friends amongst the group.

I have walked into a room filled with DIS people to say, "Hi," and been booted without a single word being said.

It is hurtful and rude. I don't know if people realize it, but it is - and I am sure someone will get all upset that I finally am stepping forth and saying this - but it is true. If the room is full of DIS and I wander in - if you don't want me there, just ask nicely. That's cool. A boot is pretty much like a door slammed right in the face.

I don't think you did anything wrong - I think some people don't know how to nicely say - we are having a private party. Can you come back later please?
(Now - if I don't leave then - boot me!)

Look at it this way... You're still relatively new to the boards in my opnion considering your post count. So most disers dont know who you were and boot you. In my game rooms I have a trusted list and if you're not on the list you get the boot until I officaly open the game.

Bett, I am so sorry this happened to you. I too, think that it is very rude on the room owners part when they don't ask you to leave before booting you. If we can meet up in VMK I will be happy to add you to my friends list.

Don't be fooled by 'post count'. Some of the newcomers (especially on this board) post the most inane things just to boost their post count.

Awesome Ally, it's happened to me, too. Some people just have twitchy trigger fingers on the boot button. Just shrug it off and know that most people I've met here have been very friendly.

I try to remember also that a lot of players are very young. Many haven't learned "please", "thanks", or "excuse me" yet. :surfweb:

I have to agree if you look at the OP join date you will see that they are not a newbie. And furthermore, a boot with out a word is kind of rough treatment as far as I am concerned. I am not shy and will ask someone to leave point blank, but rarely have I just booted a person without saying anything. And then only if I have had previous bad experiences with them. It just seems a little out of character for this board and not the nicest way to treat someone.

But it is VMK and a persons room is their castle, so if that is how they want to handle it then that is really up to them.

I can play devil's advocate as someone who has been inside a room where
the room owner boots people because it is a private party.

Relentlessly, kids will beg to stay and ask to join the party instead of leaving,
so the room owners found it easier to boot first. If I walked into a room
that the owner didn't want me in, I'd accept a boot with no questions asked.

The only reason the room owner wasn't putting it on Friends Only was that
some of the people attending were not yet on the Friends List and she
needed to keep the room open for them.

I understand it seems hurtful, but there are reasons people are quick to
boot. I can relate a boot story from a couple nights ago. I wanted
SecretAssociate to try my quest (which I didn't open to the public yet).
However, she's not on my friends list so I had to open it to all.

Before I could "close" my room to Friends Only, I disconnected.
When I returned, I found a stranger in my room, about to play my quest.
I didn't want anyone else to play it yet, so I had no choice. I booted him.

The only time I boot without saying anything is if the person is a known enemy for me, I'm really mad, or I'm doing 5 things at once and my parents are arguging with at which point I lose control of everything since I can only multi-task 5 things at a time

I have been booted for sitting in a red chair. lol. I guess that was the owners chair....

Anyway, I have only boot a few times in the year I have been playing VMK. I don't like booting because it hurts people's feelings.

What a nice group of people you all are! How I appreciate your words of kindness and encouragement. Y'all are just the best.

The culprits (just kidding) were just kids and probably didn't give their actions any thought.

I am a novice at these quests and struggling to complete them. I was able to finally get 25 ghosts - woot, woot (a feat I have not been able to do) - enabling me to complete the VMK quest. So, I thought I would try my hand at one of the guest quests. I was just taken back a little by what happened. Anyway, its past now and I will continue enjoying VMK and a friendship with all the other players. Special thanks to Califgirl for her hand of friendship.

You can come in my room anytime. I can never get people in there. Sometimes I put a bunch of my mules in there just so I have someone to talk to.

I normally don't have to boot since my rooms are friends only. But on the rare occasion I open my 'retro' race, if anyone:
I have had problems with before
Does bay be, taken, ect

I boot without I word. Sometimes I'll give them a warning. But usually not. But I usually don't have to boot.

That's a real shame.

I've seen what BriarRosie said happen. I know that this may happen sometimes.

Personally, I would rather ask a person to leave first (although I don't think I ever have).
I pretty much allow everyone in my rooms unless they are causing problems.
Although, I am currently working on a quest for little kids. And I will state in my room description that it is only for little kids. So, If I notice that it's an older kids or adults trying to do it, I will probably boot them (unless I know it's a parent or older sibling helping out). But I will probably more than likely ask them to not do the quest first. :)

Just remember to try to shrug off some of the rudeness that you may find in VMK. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of it.
But I don't let it ruin my enjoyment of VMK. :)
