Did I goof with GFL?

My family and I, (2 adults-2 kids) booked 2 rooms for 5 nights beginning december 17, concierge at the Grand Floridian-concierge (not in the tower) under the best rate program. Its been three weeks, and I haven't heard a word from the concierge. For about $100, I could change to two rooms at the AKL, non concierge. We've stayed at the AKL before and liked it. Is the GFL, and concierge there, worth $300-$400/day?

Any advice would be welcome. Thank you.

We have done concierge at both GF and AKL, and also stayed non-concierge many many times at AKL.

AKL concierge blows GF concierge out of the water. AKL castmembers are much better than at GF. We will never stay at GF again, it is not worth it at all.

You need to e-mail the concierge at GF and they will contact you. My understanding is that reservations made through BR aren't getting through to the concierge desks. The list of contacts is in the helpful concierge info thread. I'd give you the link but I'm not that talented yet. LOL I have to say though that I love AKL and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to you. I guess if you have your heart set on Concierge go for GF. If it doesn't mean that much to you go to AKL.

If you booked under the best rate program your options for switching are less flexible because of the change fees. I think if I were you I'd give GF conceirge a call. Here's a number I found for the main hotel - I'm sure they could transfer you or give you the correct number

407-824-3000

I am hesitant to type this, but my one and only experience at the GF left me very diappointed. Service was not what I expected, hopefully your experience will be better. (I don't plan to give the GF a second shot, for that much money I shouldn't have to, they should do it right every time)

The change, I believe, costs $50/room. In this case, it would certainly be worth it if the GF wasn't so great. At a hotel where over 50% of the rooms are concierge, one has to wonder just how much help or attention we will get.

As for concierge generally, is there any value other than the free food?

Are you inferring that either GF or AKL have 50% of their rooms as concierge? I know that's off for GF. I would say 20% of the rooms at GF are concierge (there are 4 full lodge buildings that are non-concierge), and that 20% is split between two buildings (which means two desk staffs, probably one pre-arrival staff).

Just not sure if you were meaning the WDW hotels or other hotels like you might stay at in NYC.

Snurk,

The entire tower at GF is concierge as well as one of the lodge buildings. I believe that at least 50% of GF is concierge (and the non-concierge is only slightly less expensive). The AKL has a much smaller concierge to regular room ratio.

If anyone has the exact figure, please let us know.

I just received this information from the Grand Floridian Concierge in response to your question.

Dear Mrs. XXXXXX,

We have 867 rooms total in the hotel and about 180 of those are concierge. Please let us know if we can assist you any further.

That makes concierge only 20.76%. They have been lovely to deal with, but you need to email them to introduce yourself and start planning.

Personally I would go to AKL it will be worth the 50 dollar change fee.

rupsend -

I have stayed at the GF 7 or 8 times - twice in concierge. My last stay in concierge was last December and it was fabulous! The Christmas atmosphere was second to none (IMO) and I've stayed at the YC/BC, BWI and WLV at Christmas time. I have not stayed at AKL, only visited. If you think you'll get more for your money at AKL (two rooms), then that might be the way to go. Personally, I just can't say enough about the wonderful experience I've had with GF on every visit.

You said you're looking for advice - mine would be to stay at the GF for Christmas! ANd call or email the IPO to introduce yourself! They were great to deal with. Good luck with your decison!

There are 4 full non concierge lodge buildings (Sago Cay, Conch, Boca Chica, and Big Pine). Sugar loaf is a smaller lodge building (I think it only has 4 floors as opposed to the other lodge buildings that have 5 floors). The main building only has rooms on 3 of the floors, and I don't think there are as many rooms per floor as the outer lodge buildings.

So 20%-25% concierge is probably about right out. I think there are a total of around 900 rooms.

We have never had any problems at the Grand Floridian in concierge and in regular rooms.

I would much prefer to be at the Grand during Christmas than any other resort unless it was Wilderness Lodge.

I have never stayed at GF, but did stay at AKL Concierge once, and I was very impressed!

As to percs for concierge @ AKL, they included:

* Continental breakfast buffet (but a very nice one with fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, bagels, pastries, etc.).
* Coffee machine all day long (regular, decaf, lattes, cappuccino - the real thing, too).
* Water bottles to take to parks.
* Beverages and snacks during the day
* Hors d'oevres in the late afternoon/early evening (provided by Boma downstairs - really yummy) & wine
* Cordials & dessert in the evening
* Concierge available to make ADR's (and I believe we may have snagged better tables this way than we would have on our own).
* Concierge check-in/check-out (no waiting in line in lobby).

We really enjoyed AKL concierge. I doubt we will be indulging in this luxury anytime soon, but it was nice the one time we did it.

I heart AKL

Another vote for concierge at the GF.

The Grand Floridian is beautiful at Christmastime, and the location is wonderful for visiting the other MK resorts to see their decorations/ shops/ restaurants as well (the AKL is only near AK). We've stayed at GF several times and have never had a problem there; we've always had perfect stays...not to say that we never will have a problem, but our experiences have been good so far, overall. The design, look, location and amenities of the resort are most preferable to me at WDW.

My one poor experience in CL was at AKL...obviously, it could have been a fluke, a lot of people report great experiences there. It's my second favorite resort at WDW after GF; however, I much prefer GF's location. I don't think I would ever schedule a complete stay at AKL because we'd feel too removed from other parts of WDW during our vacation. It's just our preference of course, but we always split a stay at AKL with another property (usually GF or BWI) in order to be close to the other parks and restaurants we enjoy. If I were to stay put for a trip, I would definitely go with GF over AKL.

AKL is lovely during Christmas, however...but GF's Christmas theming can't be beat. The gingerbread house is really fun and I love the afternoon tea and spa offerings.

Have fun whatever you decide :cloud9:

AKL is a wonderful hotel; however, here are a few disadvantages if you stay there. You may want to consider the following:
AKL is great. I've stayed there several times, and have especially enjoyed the concierge. I did stay there at Christmas and found the decorations to be kind of boring and probably the least festive of any of the other Deluxe resorts. There are lots of things to like about AKL.

1. The animals. IMHO, don’t book an AKL room unless you book a Savannah room; the Savannah room view is what makes this resort so unique, and you give up a lot for that view, so don’t settle for a view of the pool or parking lot.
2. Public animal viewing spaces.
3. A nearly perfectly executed theme.
4. The art at AKL is distinctive and is an attraction unto itself.
5. AKL concierge. With a stay in the concierge you have the opportunity to experience an exclusive animal safari at the AK.
6. Proximity to the AK. There is, obviously, no closer resort to the AK than the AKL; if you spend a lot of time at AK, you can’t do better than the AKL.
7. Interesting restaurants.
8. A large, zero entry free form pool with a water slide.
9. Arusha Rock storytellers each evening.
10. Some rooms with bunk beds.
11. Deluxe rooms that sleep five people.
12. Remote location (this is a Con for some).

Despite all the good things about AKL, it is not for some people. The following negatives should also be considered:

1. The views, while impressive at times, are also often times devoid of animals, and the vehicle trails are less than picturesque; it is not much fun to pay for a view of animals and get a view of a maintenance road.
2. The décor is not for some people. The rooms are dark and cool.
3. Distance from MK, Epcot & MGM. While it is true that AK busses are not shared with other resorts, in off-season, the busses often make a stop at the AK after leaving the AKL and then heading on to their destinations. This makes for a very long commute to the parks.
4. Only 1 pool. This pool, while large, gets crowded. There is no quiet pool, so it is also very noisy.
5. Limited recreational activities. There is, naturally, no beach or boating, but there is also no jogging path and no tennis courts.
6. Inconvenience to other resorts. The AKL’s biggest drawback, IMHO, is that it is very difficult to get to any other resort. You must take a bus to a Theme Park or DTD and then transfer to another bus to get to any other resort. This is an especially big problem if you (1) get tired of the food at your resort or (2) are not an adventurous eater. Every other deluxe resort has boat or monorail access to at least two other resorts so that you can take advantage of additional restaurants and recreational activities.
7. Standard views often have highway noise.
8. The walk to your room can be extremely long.
9. Price. Savannah view rooms are expensive.
10. Non-deluxe rooms are small.
11. Remote location (this is a Pro for some).

The Grand Floridian is beautiful, and the concierge service is wonderful (I have not stayed in Sugar Loaf, but RPC is great). GF does have boating, a beach, two large pools (1 with zero entry and a waterslide), tennis, jogging, a full service spa, 5 restaurants, about 20 percent larger rooms than AKL (also, turndown service is standard at all GF rooms), mini-bars, monorail access to MK, CR and the Poly, Monorail to Epcot via the TTC, fireworks cruises, the Pirate Cruise for little ones, the afternoon tea, character dining and some rather expensive shopping. Which brings me to the GF's single biggest drawback - It is expensive. That goes for the shops, rooms and restaurants. The rooms can be a bit of a walk from the transportation, and self parking is the most inconvenient of any resort on property (it is across Floridian Way-quite a hike to the front of the resort, much less to any room). There is also a convention center, though don't mistake this for a typical convention hotel. Shorts and mickey ears outnumber suits and ties 10 to 1.

IMHO, if you can afford the difference, I'd go with a room at the GF Concierge vs. 2 rooms at the AKL.

Having never stayed at either, I can't give an opinon of the hotels themselves. But I've been in touch with GF's itinerary planners for our upcoming honeymoon, and they've been FANTASTIC!!! I did have to e-mail them to get the ball rolling, but it's been great service ever since.

Here's the address: wdwgfplanning@disney.com

Just introduce yourself, maybe include your confirmation number, and if you have anything you want them to do, let them know. Once you hit the 90 day mark they can book everything for you, and then e-mail you your itinerary with all the times and confirmations. They can also pre-purchase items for you (like Mickey Ears and Pal Mickey's) and have the ready in the room for you when you get there. They can handle almost any request.

If this is any indication of the service DFi and I will get once we arrive, then we are in for the vacation of a lifetime!!!

Wow, fantastic list--hope this gets good use on here. Very helpful! :cheer2:
