Help me with this... WDW re-opened utilizing mostly DVC locations on property. this list from a different blog provides specifics Dated April 4 , 2021...
.. Do you expect DVC to say Thank You to the members of the Vacation Club with a special perk ?
I feel like I am the only person that is thinking to myself...
Especially since they don’t even want to honor the gold AP.

I think they wanted to open them or what would they do with all the members who could not use their points. I lost 100 points last year because I couldn't book. Didn't think it was fair but what could I do? I don't think they wanted members in that mess again. Availability was great in the beginning but it is tough again

I just edited... but it would be kind if they still had the Gold AP perk at least

I question how they handled the breakage rooms when they first reopened. They were moving many people to DVC resorts. There is a cap on the breakage income dues credit to members, so they may have been able to profit on it, using rooms we paid dues on. We did get the credit but I would like to know how that was calculated.

Many of those rooms were also rooms owned by DVC. They have plenty of points to reserve rooms so I bet many of the rooms they moved to were paid for with their own points and not breakage.

They were legally obligated to open then when they did.
I suspect that if Disney had a choice, they would have opened a lot fewer DVC resorts initially.

We did some split stays and stayed at a few DVC resorts in July. (We went just before the theme parks reopened.) Wow, were those resorts empty!

I think they should have given us something. Those who made reservations when they were closed were able to cancel and get their money back. DVC owners had less time to use their points and had to juggle more than usual and I am sure many lost many points. When we first joined in 1992, we had free park passes till December 31, 1999. That was great.

That was the best perk ever! My in laws had it too when I was dating my husband we would switch days of who went to the park too because they didn’t have fingerprints back then either that tied one person to the ticket. We just did the math that if you bought back then the cost per point to hold it over it’s lifetime was $1.30.

For me, the "perk" is that Disney survived the perfect storm. Their movie businesses, their theme park businesses, their cruise ship businesses, their hotel businesses, their travel businesses, and their sports businesses all went dark at the same time for an extended period. They survived somehow and my investment in DVC still has value.

Uh - Disney's market cap has almost doubled since the beginning of the pandemic. They may have had to delay the release of some of their movies, but DMED has been absolutely on fire due to the overwhelming success of Disney+. They added millions of new subscribers - and consequently millions in new revenue to the bottom line. Remember, almost ALL of their content was previously published work, so it was INCREDIBLY profitable. And investors responded in kind.

And as far as DPEP is concerned, they may have had to shutter the parks for a few months, but they were still getting a steady infusion of cash - to keep resorts and transportation running - from DVC dues. And even better (for them), they were continuing to get dues payments but didn't have to burn any resources to actually accommodate the payers of those dues.

Far, far, far, ... far - from a perfect storm. More like a very timely and convenient crutch to do some of the things they've been wanting to do for years now.

I believe Disney credits Disney+ with keeping the going. They shall thank the subscribers by increasing the costs in the not so far future I'm sure.

I do think that they were hating on DVC to start - still quite questionable IMO that they could keep it closed as long as they did. And very questionable for VGC that it's been closed well over a year when there's been no such restrictions upon timeshares from the state of CA. Then I do think it shifted and DVC became a good vehicle to get them back open, have onsite lodging, and not have to open their own accommodations.

Hi just wanted to add These are all great opinions and it is helping me to navigate my confused thoughts and feelings about everything Disney.
Also trying to figure out future decisions., Knowing Disney is studying every financial reaction to weather future storms. Hope that isn’t a jinx for hurricane season starting soon.

Everything that has been mentioned regarding how DVC resorts were required to be open (due to DVC members paying the costs of those resorts) are accurate so I won't pile on there. More importantly when it comes to who "saved WDW", Florida locals accounted for the majority of guests to the WDW parks in 2020...not DVC members. IMO, WDW doesn't need to offer any "perk" to anyone for visiting WDW last year. Most of those visitors were dying to take a vacation and were ecstatic that WDW was open. It's a two way street.
