Did anything "extra" come with your house?

A couple of years ago my dad bought me a Cheryl Bear CD because he thought it was so hilarious that there was a song on there that talked about a dog coming with someone's house...and it reminded him of me. We got a very large dog with our house (previous owners moved to a covenant community that didn't allow large dogs).

Along with the dog we also "inherited" a very nice cat, a riding lawn mower, a standing freezer and the largest entertainment center I have ever seen in my life. We agreed to all of this, of course. In fact, agreeing to the large dog was a tie-breaker between us and a competing offer, and the dog turned out to be a fantastic addition to our family.

So how about you? Did you "inherit" anything with the purchase of your home?

My current house was bought brand new, with us working on the plans.

However, when we sold our house in Virginia, we left the snow shovels in the garage!

We got a 6 foot sign that the owners had hanging outside their framing business and a picture of the store front. The sign says "House of Frames" and then the city under it. We love the sign and the couple was really touched we wanted it because it meant a lot to them but they had no place for it because they were moving into assisted living.

And the chandelier that is in our dining room has a note stuck in it from one of the contractors saying to call him if we are getting rid of it. We are now wondering if it's worth something and we still have the note in it because we think it's funny.

leaky basement (which I fixed) and a family tree of spiders:scared1:

Eewww, now I am itchy thinking about spiders and boo-lol-you removed your Tahiatian scene. but Clint Eastwood still rocks.:thumbsup2

Yeah, they were nice enough to leave the stairs to the attic brand new still in the box. Woo hoo, we didn't have to pull out the ladder every time we wanted to get up there.

But when we opened it, the thing was the wrong size, and they knew it. AND we found out they, behind our backs, added $50 to our price for us to pay for it.

But I can't be too angry, because shortly after they sold us the house, (and basically gypped us) the husband passed away at age 59 from a heart attack.:sad1:

If you live in the NYC area and need pull-down attic stairs for free (brand new and still in the box, although 16 years old), PM me and come take a look. Seriously.

Three garbage cans, a bunch of lightbulbs, and the bath rug they had "staged" in the guest bathroom.

I'm still looking for the hidden cache of cash... ;)

The owners of our first house left us a vintage windshield, in perfect condition and carefully packed. We talked several times about identifying what kind of car it went to and selling it...but we ended up leaving it to the people we sold the house to. We told them about it and suggested it could be sold, and since we also left them our chest freezer (working and only a few years old) I figure that wasn't too rotten of us. ;)

When my parents moved in in 1980 the previous owners had left a dresser, a desk, and a vanity table in the upstairs bedroom. It was in great shape and we still use them in there today. They were downsizing and had no room for the set so they left it.

I live in my grandparents farm house. After my grandma died, my parents took her dog to their house just up the hill. This house had other tenants for a couple of years, but when we moved in the dog moved back home. I guess he knew we were family.

Does your local Habitat for Humanity have a reStore? (building materials re-selling store) The ladder would be perfect for that!

Our house came with an old wrench tucked up at the top of the foundation (under the basement ceiling). That was right next to a paid of really old shoes with about 3" soles.

Just a couple particle board book shelves. In our first house they left a painting in the basement, nothing fancy but it worked with our color scheme. I had it reframed and we still have it. In our second house there was an old, metal bed frame that I wanted to take with us when we moved. I had it on the list to take for the movers but somehow DH overrode me. We later saw a similar one at an antique store for big bucks :rolleyes1.

We also bought a house that came with a dog (I loved that dog). I don't know how much was true but my parents explained to me when I was young that the dog deeded with the property. That also meant we left her behind when we moved. :(

I loved that house - very old and beautiful. But it also came fully loaded with snakes!! :rolleyes1.

The original furniture also deeded with the house and they were amazing antiques. Oh, to have them today.... :guilty:

I got a whole storage shed full of mostly junk. Old pictures, letters, yearbooks, furniture and a lot of boxes and instructions from household items from the 70's. I tried to find someone to take the personal stuff, but the woman who owned the house had dementia and her daughter wanted nothing to do with it. I finally threw the papers away 2 years later when she didn't come around.

I also got about 2 inches of cat hair on all the baseboards:scared1: and 12 inches of grass overgrowth in the front yard. Luckily, I got a great deal, since noone else seemed to be able to look beyond the superficial:woohoo:

With the only previously owned house we've owned, about 20 years ago we gained an electric lawnmower. It was a townhouse and the previous owners moved to a single family home so they didn't need it. Our other 3 homes have been brand new so the only things left were leftover tiles, carpet pieces and a couple of cabinet knobs.

Our DS bought a townhouse 3 years ago. When he went into the basement closet (unfinished walls in the closet), there was a bunch of stuff crammed into the spaces around the framing. There was flatware, christmas lights, shelving, rocks, and a few other things. He trashed all of it. He still hasn't gone into the attic (needs to buy a ladder) so no telling what's up there. He bought the house from a family of 6 adults so they had stuff crammed into everywhere in this 2000 sq ft townhouse (no garage). He lives alone so there's plenty of space for him. Oh, and the previous owners left my DS a couple of sports prints because they knew he was a fan.

We were very lucky - we got all of the curtains and blinds in each of the windows -which we loved and never changed. We also got a lovely swing and flower boxes which are on the front porch. Plus they are our neighbors and really great!

Hmm... lots of torn up newspapers and clothing that was being used as insulation (the house was built in 1920). We also got a really old suitcase that we found in the attic that had the original chattal mortgage... and some hair.
