This morning I woke up and on tv they were playing an old movie called The Shop Around the Corner. Jimmy Stewart was in it, and I like him, so I watched. I thought the name sounded familiar to me because one of my favorite movies was You've Got Mail and her shop was called that. Imagine my surprise to realize that You've Got Mail was a remake of this movie, in a modern way.

I loved it! Anyone else seen it?

I've seen it several times. It usually comes on this time of year. Another good one to see....a more updated version....is 'In the Good old Summertime" with Judy Garland and Van Johnson. Same concept with some music thrown in. "You've Got Mail" is just a more updated version of these two.

I haven't seen In the Good Old Summertime either. I did notice in the movie today there were several scenes that You've Got Mail copied completely, verbatim, like the dialog between Jimmy Stewart and his co worker outside the cafe where he was to meet his blind date. Tom Hanks and co star said virtually the same thing outside the coffee house. "Sort of has the same coloring as __. You mean Kathleen Kelly from the little book store? Yeah. Well, if you don't like how __ looks, then you definitely won't like this girl. Why not? Because it is __."

It's a fantastic film. Margaret Sullavan probably had the most beautiful, unique voice of any actress (by comparison Meg Ryan sounds like Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars)

My DD and I love this movie! If you get a chance, there is a musical based on this movie (or vice versa, I forget) called "She Loves Me" which is also great and the music is wonderful! It is sometimes done by community theaters.

Wow...I love "You've got mail"...I had no idea it was a modern remake of another movie!!! You learn something new everyday around here on the DIS, huh????

Same thing happens in "In the Good Old Summertime". It's dubbed the musical remake of "Shop Around the Corner". I'm not familiar with "She Loves Me." I'll have to check this out.

SHE LOVES ME had songs by the same team who wrote FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and was on Broadway in 1963. Barbara Cook was the lead and she still sings some of the songs from the show in her concerts.

So how did the 2 characters start talking in the original?
