Did anyone watch "Emma"( Jane Austen) on Masterpiece Theater this week?

Wow, it was really good. I really liked the lead actress. It was better than the "Emma" movie that was out several years ago.

I got to watch some of it, I'm hoping it will be on again sometime to DVR.
I LOVE this genre to read and watch.

That's Romola Garai. I think she was great for the role of Emma. She was so believable with her plotting, but you knew she meant well! I've seen her in a few other Masterpiece things over the years, such as Daniel Deronda.

I agree with the PP, I totally this type of entertainment. I love the clothes, the accents, the mannerisms of the period, the situations pertaining to the era, the history, the architecture ... and everything else that goes on in these intriguing stories! Masterpiece (Classic/Mystery/Contemporary, all three of its segments) are so cultured and refined!

Nothing ever, ever beats The Forsythe Saga. OMG I just want to go watch that for the trillionth time now. That Soames Forsythe is a character you won't find anywhere else.

I am a big Jane Austen fan. I thought the film was very well done and thoroughly enjoyed it! Not sure of the times, but two more Jane Austen films will be shown this month on PBS.

Another Austen fan here.

Jane Austen is the women's "Godfather" in my book.

You can always go back to Austen for figuring out a social/family situation. That is my favorite part of the genre.

I am not a fan of JA's books but I really did like this version of Emma (prior to that the only two JA based movies I liked were Emma Thompson's version of Sense and Sensibility and Clueless LOL). I still do not like her books, but I"m going to watch the next two Masterpiece Theatres to see if they are any good.

I admit they are not an easy read but I love the language and the syntax. Jane Austen was such an anomaly at the time. Her writings show a very unique perspective for a woman of her generation.

This Emma was terrific. Jonny Lee Miller was a wonderful Mr. Knightley. I think they did a great job telling the story in a very accessible way.

I had watched it a few months back when it aired in England......

not sure why they always edit it when they show it in the US??? they did it too

try googling it........ and look for older videos...... I had watched the whole Emma a few months ago on line....
and u might be able to find the complete versions of the other Austen works too

just want to add...... if u love Austen.... you'll probably love Gaskells "North and South" with Richard Armitage ( its not the American mini series with Patrick Swayze).......... I just discovered it a couple of years ago...........

A friend who loves JA also recomended the Gaskill books and miniseries. I've actually got an ILL out right now trying to get a BBC mini series called Lark Rise to Candleford, I was told it's right up there with JA and the Cranford/Return to Cranford shows. It's based on a trilogy of books by Flora Thompson.

I am a big JA fan. Although I did like this series I actually preferred the movie with Gwyenth Paltrow. I thought it went into more depth. Don't get me wrong I liked the series and I especially liked the way Jane Fairfax was portrayed. It just seemed a bit rushed. I also loved seeming my old friend Dumbledore. Michael Gambon was terrific.

I agree. North and South is wonderful! I discovered it last August and just fell in love with the characters.
