The new tracking system that some rental cars put on their vehicles? I guess it tells them if you are speeding, or if you cross the state line when you are not supposed to. They supposedly can fine you. I had read about this somewhere else, but that it was just independent rental agencies not chains doing this. Anyone hear of places like National, Dollar, etc. doing this?

There have been stories from time to time about this. I haven't heard of any of the major rental agencies doing this.

If you have a rental with neverlost or onstar they could do this easily.

Also now if you have the transponders in your car that allow you to pass the toll booths they can track your speed that way also.

They can also shut your car off if you're speeding,
(but I assume they'll wait until you've turned it off
and then disable it so you can't turn it back on).

They will also fine you $$ if their tracker shows
you've been speeding or if you've traveled
out of state (if you're not allowed by contract).

It's true... It has happened, and is happening
more and more frequently.
You DO have the right to ask if your rental
is "loaded" - I read that they have to tell you
IF YOU ASK (but not if you don't ask).
