For the longest time DH has been insisting that I watch the movie Surf's Up. Honestly, I thought it looked terrible-- another movie about cute penguins I could do without :rolleyes1.

We recently subscribed to get Blockbuster's "Games Pass" which means unlimited movie and game rentals for 20 some dollars so we've been watching a lot of movies. Yesterday we finally rented Surf's Up and I have to say that it was SO good. I was very very pleasantly surprised!!

So, my question- any movies that you weren't expecting much from that turned out to be really good? Looking for movie suggestions!

Outsourced -about a guy who is sent to teach a call center in India how to do the job
(is being turned into a tv show next fall)

Ramen Girl -about a girl who is left in Tokyo by her boyfriend and decides she wants to learn to be a soup cook

Both of these were instant watches on Netflix, so you should be able to watch them

Lord of the Rings. I refused to watch any of them for years. The previews looked dark, creepy and cheesy. One Christmas I was flat out of gift ideas for my son and while I wasn't the least bit interested in the movies, I bought the first two... (ROTK hadn't yet been released in the theaters at this point) for him thinking he might get at least some entertainment out of them. One weekend, while I was away, my husband and son watched them. I came home to both of them saying.... "Pleeeease at least START to watch one of them!!!" I did. I was utterly and completely gobsmacked. What was I thinking by not giving these movies a chance?!? They were quite simply, incredible. They, in my opinion raised the bar for movie making and to this day, very few have surpassed, let alone meet them on that bar.

Also, have to agree with you on Surf's Up! My story was similar to yours... I dismissed it thinking "Eh, just yet another average animated movie". Now... it's one of our favorites! So good!!

Another for me was the first Pirates of the Caribbean. Those original previews didn't do it justice! :)

Ironman! Expected another dopey comic book/super hero cheesefest. Well... it is in some respects but it's a higher quality cheese than most! :p

GalaxyQuest and Bring It On.

I thought they were both going to be stupid, one-dimensional movies. While neither of them is anything close to high art, they were both a lot smarter and funnier than I gave them credit for. DH and I find ourselves laughing about things in those movies often.

O, Brother, Where Art Thou didn't seem like it would be our cup of tea but it is high-larious and gets funnier every time you watch it.

Up surprised me, but in a bad way. I am 50/50 on Pixar movies. Some I love and some I would not watch again if you paid me. I had no desire to see Up when it came out in theatres. My daughter got it for Christmas and asked me to watch it with her. I decided to and yes, I had an open mind when I started watching it.

I loved the beginning but started to find it boring when he landed the house wherever they ended up. We watched until they find the explorer and then we had to turn it off for some reason. Since then, I have had absolutely no desire to watch the rest of it. I have been told that I should because there are some great lessons but I just can't be bothered. I don't know what it is but it just isn't grabbing my attention. I really did expect to like it because I have heard nothing but good things about it but I guess I am the exception to the rule.

I will now start :duck:

Yesterday my friend brought over "Unglorious *******s" and when it waqs finished we just looked at each other dumbfounded. We thought it was going to be a good old WWII action movie with at least some historical relevance, but it just plain did not make sense.

I am embarassed even to reveal this....we have a DD11 and we are VERY selective about what she watches, so we end up watching a ton of kids movies that are just torturous. So the movie I thought would be torturous but I actually was rolling laughing over?

Beverly Hills Chihauhau

It was hilarious, and I actually CRIED at the end.

Promise this will go no further!

"Bewitched" with Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman. I hate romantic comedies. I"m a "Ninja Assasin" type of gal. But I have to admit I actually like "Bewitched" Gofigure:laughing:

I have to agree about surfs Up. I was hesitent to watch it since I did not care for Happy Feet.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I thought it was going to be lame but it was very cute.

Penelope. With Christina Ricci

It was funny. DD11 and I actually named our GS puppy, Delgado after the one in the movie. There is a part where Delgado is trying to scare other little dog puppies by saying "the world needs big bad dogs"etc, we kept playing it over and over.

The Boy with the Striped Pajamas-that was shocking I didn't think it would end the way it did and Precious, was just as shocking.

It's an oldie, but I liked Shallow Hal. I expected it to be obnoxious and make fun of overweight people, but it turned out to be about being beautiful on the inside.

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle...I thought it looked stupid, but it was funny!

Bend It Like Beckham was so much better than I expected.

YEARS and years ago when I was a teenager, a friend and I were bored one afternoon and decided to go to a matinee. Back then, we didn't have a lot of choices of what we could see like we do nowdays.

Anyway, there was a new western playing at one of the local theaters. At that time, I was not into cowboy/western type of movies but my friend heard good things about it so we decided to go. The other options must not have been good for me to agree to go see this movie.

I couldn't believe it - I was totally taken by surprise. I had NO IDEA what this movie was about before I saw it. It was a comedy with with a western theme. I don't ever remember laughing as much in the theater like I did for that movie. It was so silly, stupid and funny! The movie was Blazing Saddles.

The Losers. I saw it because I'm a big fan of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but I wasn't expecting much of it... And then a minute in, I forgot he was even in it because of Chris Evans' amazingly geeky, ridiculously adorable character, Jensen (I'm a geek and LOVE geeky boys). Aside from that, I absolutely loved the movie and thought it was an awesome throwback to movies I grew up watching.
