Diapers and forumula

Definitely check into your state's WIC program. They can help with not only the baby but the mom as well.

Also for formula she should check out WIC, it pays for formula up until they are a year old..You actually can make a lot of still get WIC I knew a lot of people who got the formula for their child..

I have a 5 month old son. For diapers we use store brand (we live in Michigan so I use Meijer brand) and have never had a problem with me. My son has sensitive skin and has never had a problem using store brand. I like Luvs and Pampers but they are often too expensive. Huggies always leaked for us. I do use pampers wipes though.

For formula I've gotten the most coupons and free samples for Enfamil. From them I've gotten 2 boxes of free samples so far and I get at least $15 in coupons a month. I got flyers for Enfamil from the hospital and his doctors office that had codes on it for a free case of formula too. I went online and signed my mom up too so she get samples and coupons at her house as well.

I was also able to get a lot of great toys and cloths cheap by going to mom to mom sales and garage sales.

The family just found out that my 22 year old niece is over 7 months pregnant unexpectedly. She will be a single mom living at home with her mom and dad for now. We haven't had a baby in the family for 20 years and I want to help her as much as possible. What are the best brand of diapers nowadays, and where is the cheapest place to buy them? Also, in case she doesn't breastfeed, where is the best price on formula? I now believe those people on that show "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant". She didn't. She had several negative at home pregnancy tests and was still fitting in her tiny jeans until a few weeks ago. She also had some periods, although irregular, and no morning sickness. Now she has only two months to get ready and we are running around planning a shower. Are there any must haves on a baby shower registry these days? Thanks.

Breastfeeding is definitely cheaper than formula feeding, and Mom should at least consider and attempt to do so (I will leave it at that, and not get preachy), but if that's not a viable option, have her (and other's in the family as well) sign up with the formula companies, they often send samples and coupons. Beyond that, go on all the formula and diaper company websites and sign up for offers, she'll likely get lots of coupons.

As far as diapers, it can be tricky because some brands fit some babies better than others and some babies get rashes from some brands. I always found that I did as well with store brand diapers as the more expensive ones. The prices of the jumbo packs at BJs was similar to the store brand on a per diaper price, at least when my kids were small. My suggestion is to stack coupons with sales and buy as many as you can when they are on sale. Cloth is also an option worth considering.

Encourage her to find out if she's available for WIC assitance, I've been surprised to hear that a lot more people qualify for it than I ever imagined. If she qualifies, they will provide her with vouchers for at least some of the formula for the baby or supplemental food for herself if she is breastfeeding.

And in terms of baby registry and buying gadgets and things: I am a fan of keeping it very minimal, at least for the first few months. The only things you REALLY MUST have are: a carseat (don't buy used, and make sure it's installed properly), some clothes (keep it simple when they are tiny...some onesies or side snap t-shirts, and some snap up sleepers are all you really need) and a safe place for baby to sleep. Everything else is nice and convenient, but really a bonus. The other one thing that is extra nice (and a necessity to me) is a good sling or baby bjorn type carrier.
