According to Mitsubishi Heavy Industrie's web site, the Diamond Princess's fire started on deck #5.

Few details are provided on their web site.

it's doubtful a fire of that magnitude could occur on a active ship....
the princess had not yet been fitted with sprinklers...
on the other hand the achille lauro did burn out about 4 years ago....
kind of scary if it happens in the middle of the atlantic or pacific where there aren't other ships around to evacuate pasengers...

Interesting that they are choosing to move forward with restoration. I have some concerns about going to sea on a ship which was in such a fire. The heat had to affect the steel, even though it may not have affected the outer shell, it had to have stressed the steel which makes up the superstructures framework.

I don't think I would trust anything MHI has a hand in. They built the roof on our new ballpark and it has been nothing but trouble since opening day 18 months ago.

Where did you hear this? The last that I have heard is that they are probably going to have to scrap the Diamond and start building from scratch. They are still investigating the fire and have not made an plans yet.

The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries status report includes the line, "MHI, after conducting and assessing the damages, will immediately commence restoration and continue construction of the vessel."

I assume that it will take some serious analysis by experts to define the scope of that restoration. But at least the status report doesn't say, "MHI has already determined that the damage is so extensive that the current hull will be scrapped."

If the ship, is 60-70% damaged, then, presumably, it is 30-40% undamaged. Also, keep in mind that the report doesn't say"60-70% destroyed," just "60-70% damaged."

My guess is that extensive parts of the ship will need to be removed and restarted, but that they won't have to restart the whole construction project from scratch. But that's only a guess, and I could be wrong.

Thanks for your reply. It will be very interesting to watch what develops.

i suppose it also depends on the assessors....whether it's a total loss or salvagable....
but personally, i'll be hesitant to cruise on her in the future if they don't start from scratch....
i'm admittedly superstitious.....i can't imagine how anyone was on board the achille lauro when she was destroyed by fire.....who would even consider setting foot on her after the terrorist attack....certainly not me......just as i would never stay in a hotel after a major fire....even years later....assuming i knew about it of cousre....

bottom line.....call me crazy, but sometimes there really is something to a jinx.....(the achille lauro for example)....
