diagnosing dyslexia in young children?

PD-kudos to you for being on top of things with your daughter. :goodvibes I know that it is too early to test her.

When my DS was 4, I also knew that something wasn't right. I have a degree in early childhood education and people said that I was expecting too much. A major sign in young children is the inability to rhyme.

By age 6, I took him to a neuropsychologist at Wake Forest/Bowman Gray School of Medicine for an evaulation. MRIs show that dyslexics have too little activity in the back of the brain and increased activity in the front. It is a medical condition but unfortunately it isn't covered by insurance. You will find that they are very creative individuals. I am amazed by my son's artistic ability. He tells me how to arrange furniture and accessories. :teeth:

Early intervention is the most effective. There is a window between 5 and 7 when the underlying skills of reading are most easily learned.

My DS11 was diagnosed as severe. He didn't start to read until he was 9. He now reads 4 and 5 syllable words. :sunny: I still spend 2 hours every afternoon tutoring him on what was taught in class. For him, he has to use rote memorization to succeed in school.

The Nov. 23, 1999 issue of Newsweek magazine has a great 8 page article on Dyslexia. Check it out at your library.

Good luck,

Lori
