Our server was the most informative waitstaff person we encountered on our vacation. She was enthusiastic and couldn't wait to impart her knowledge of the food to us. I overheard this same kind of excitement and professionalism from the other servers working near us as well. This must be part of the training to work at Jiko. As the evening closed I hate to admit-- we did suffer from absent server syndrome. She ended up with 5 tables and we just couldn't get those drinks refilled, etc..
Our three youngest all ordered kid's starters. One had celery, carrots and apples (I think) with a great peanut butter dip. Another had a wonderful dish of fresh fruit. Our youngest, a five year old boy, was served a huge salad with ranch dressing, which he declared to be "blazerin' good"! Now, we've never heard that term before but think he must have been mighty impressed with that salad to have coined such a phrase!
My 15 year old was sick and in the hotel room. This was supposed to be his birthday dinner.
My 16 year old, DH and me all shared 2 orders of the Crispy Cinnamon Spiced Beef Rolls with veggie banana dip. I was really expecting to like these more than I did. The server kept saying that the beef was minced. Let's call it what it tasted like. Plain ground beef. I was expecting a lot more flavor. The dip was not what I expected, either. I guess I wanted some kick to it but there wasn't any. We also shared an order of the Kenyan Coffee BBQ'd chicken flatbread. Frankly, I preferred the BBQ'd chicken Pizza we had at Wolfgang Puck Express. I had planned on ordering a salad but didn't need to as there was a salad type garnish with greens, apples and a vinaigrette on the beef roll plates. More than plenty and I preferred the salad to the appetizers!!
The kiddos ordered grilled fillet of beef, grilled salmon (which had to be eaten iced cold as my son asked the server twice for lemon to squeeze onto it and-- absent server that she was--never did remember --after promising twice that she'd get it), and I forget what the other child ordered. They liked their meals.
DH, 16 year old and I all ordered the Oak Grilled Filet Mignon with macaroni and cheese and red wine sauce. DH claims this was his favorite entree. (Oh, yeah--once again we ordered our filets well done and they were butterflied.) I thought it was very good but can't put my finger on why I didn't just love it. I did like it very much. I don't think I would order it again. 16 year old found the macaroni and cheese to be a bit strong with different cheeses. He did like the entree, though.
For our desserts my oldest son ordered the coffee and amarula cheesecake. He liked the coffee one pretty well. Not the other. DH, middle son and I all ordered the Tanzanian chocolate candies with dipping sauce. This was DH's second favorite dessert and my third favorite of the vacation. (If you haven't read my other reviews first prize goes to Fulton's milk chocolate creme brulee!) I think I was expecting a very smooth, melted chocolate kind of filling in the purses but I would describe the filling to have an almost gritty, raw brownie dough kind of texture. Not bad at all--just different than I expected. DH does not like chocolate and orange mixed usually but he really enjoyed his "candies"!
The little guys ordered the Jiko's Kid puzzle with mini banana split sundaes. These desserts were $5.50 each. At each of the restaurants where we ordered the kids a "special", themed, more expensive kid's dessert--the desserts were much more elaborate, fun and tasty than this dessert. Examples of better kid's specialty dessert: LTT, Shutter's, and Kona. This was not much more than a scoop of ice cream with a few (4?) flat white chocolate jigsaw puzzle pieces that fit together. Not nearly as colorful, creative and fun as the other restaurants mentioned above. For the money I should have just ordered an adult dessert for them to share!
As crazy as it sounds, we all missed Boma. We liked Jiko but if it came down to a choice we would go back to Boma over Jiko in a heartbeat. Even my DH who loved his meal. Go figure!
