As this trip was all DH's idea, and all I had to do was wonder what I did so well that he thought of it and then do all the planning... I wasn't sure he and DS, 14 would like Disneyland as much as WDW. And now that we are home the vote is still out on which I like best. They know what they like, but I am the one that does all the planning, so it really is all about me!
And I like them both! DL is my first love, and as such I get all chocked up with the memories of where and what I did when I was so very much younger. Shocked DS when he asked "And why are we riding this ride...?" and my answer was, "'Cause it's the best make-out ride at Disneyland!" That came straight from my life at 16 and a great trip to DL! He didn't ask again, and when I wanted to ride something and he looked like he might want to know why all I had to do is tell him that I "remember" it as being a great ride....

In case you don't have a child between 11 and 22, that is a very large roll-eye, and gag moment for them. They don't want to know, at least not know that you know... know what I mean? And come to think of it DH wasn't to thrilled either, I even got the one eye Volcun eye arch look... Neither asked how I knew this info. I am going to assume you all don't want to know either...

One of the best things about the trip last week was the timing. We had no lines! Walked on to everything except the Sun Wheel think at DCA. But more latter.

Any way, we went to SCal for the oldest childs Grad from USC. No not Univ. of S. Carolina, and we do have a middle child there, but the OTHER one. The one that costs 5xs more $$$$ per year to attend. And since DH gets to go with me to WDW as often as I can get him off work, he asked me "Why don't we do a side trip to Disneyland? " Well hot dog! YES! And I started reading the "other" threads here on the DIS.

They don't tell you a lot about DL.

But I had been on a 3 day solo trip last Aug, and I did remember what I liked to do. And I prepped the boys that POC was down, so all was going to be well.

We got to LAX and got the required white mine van and started to the park.
I had booked a "View" room for $159.25 with Travolocity a few weeks ago. This was way under the listed price. And it was nice. But we didn't know that at 9:47pm the entire hotel, and DTD was in bed. Because I wanted to get to DL ASAP we waited to eat..... not a good idea! Every thing except the bar was closed... but we made it to the bar and got some food. Also the pool closes at 9 pm!!!! Who knew? Well, obos. not me!

But by now it was 2 am our home time and 11pm Cal time and we had to get up early cause that is what you do at Disney...

So the next day is Wed. Toontown moring madness. We don't have entry to that . No big. Hit Goofys and get breakfast. Pretty good food. Way more expensive then WDW! $81 for 3 to eat breakfast!!!! Poor DH was so shocked he couldn't say a word! Even the 14yo was shocked!!! But it was good and we all took our time and ate a lot. Now at WDW all the characters come to your table, even if you at solo. Not at Goofys. We were skipped by the Fairy Godmother, and Chip and Dale and a few others. In the hour we were there we only had Goofy and Pluto stop by. But that was ok, as we were stuffing food in our faces.. finally got full and then started the walk to the park.

Now I know some of you haven't been to both parks, and I know some of you have..... and it is so strange sometimes while you are at one to remember stuff and then relize that you are not only at the wrong park, but the wrong state! So think how it is when you grow up going to one park and then have made it a life quest to go to the other park enought times a year to make sure you get enought use out of a Premium Annual Pass... When you are overfed, overtired and over excited it is like a enless loop of memory that is over exposed! I knew where to go and what to do, and since I plan the trips there wasn't any arguement. I had not planned that the boys would be shocked how different it all was.

So ok, THE Castle is smaller... But as I pointed out it is the "orginal" castle. And the park is smaller in size, but has so much more detail! And yes, dear POC is down... sorry, it will be down at WDW when we go in 2 weeks to... Bet you all didn't know the howl you heard last Tues, May 9th was my DS's shocked whail of "NOOOOOOO!!!"

On the other hand, they have Indy. Now I don't like the Dino ride at AK, and neither does the family. But WOW! If I could decorate my house as well as they theamed the entry line to Indy I could have my own HGTV show! I think I like the line as much if not more then the ride! DS loved it... but he is 14yo and all that goes with that... DH wasn't so sure... as an Engineer he is still debating on it...

So that over we head to the Splash. DH won't do roller coaster. EXCEPT Big Thunder... go figure? And this is really strange as BTM is the ride that put him in the hospital 7 or 8 years ago! Kids are strange... .So DH and I hit Splash. And loved it... differnt is good in this case... argued about weither it was open our last trip together to DL. He said, NO, I said YES. So as we got off I asked the CM when the ride was open... you get one guess how right I was.
And off to Pooh.
Now I had to do the mom face to get DS to ride. Pout, say, well you don't Have to ride it with me... So of course he did. For some reason it wasn't his favorite.

I love the kid rides. And as the planner, I do get to chose....next time you do all the planning, dear. hahahhehe, like that will happen!

Off to Haunted Mansion. Loved the new stuff. Spent the ride looking for all the differences between DL and WDW. ( Note: this is one of the rides I remember from being 16... ....don't ask, won't tell....)

Hit the island. So much smaller then I remember, and this also used to be open latter in the evening when I was younger. And the Fort is now closed up! Drat. Canoes and the Columbia was down. So that wasn't to fun.

Headed over to the center of the park...

Now by this time DS, and DH are asking what else we have to do? We had only been in the park an hour and a half and we had hit 1/3 of the park. I mean, everyone had stayed home except us! I so planned this, or so I told them... and no they didn't believe me.

We hit IASW. As the 1/4 hour was playing. This is one of these things that I really, really miss in WDW ! The dolls come out and go around every 15 min at DL. I have been to WDW many times, and I know they don't do this there, but I still look for it! Ingrained youth memories. Sigh. Now this is one ride I can't make my mind up about. I love it, I think? And it is soooooo much longer at DL! And they have different countries. I feel kinda cheated each time I ride it at WDW on the one hand, but on the other hand the song is enless at Dl! And I do mean endless. I think the ride is to short at WDW and to long at DL...

The Matterhorn. Where to start? I bribed my DS to go on this. Money was involved. Why? Cause it is a classic, and the pouty mom sad face didn't work, and I knew he would be upset if he didn't go on it. Not now, but when he is like 35 yo. And it is so much not a big deal. I pointed out how it was an "orginal" Disney ride. How they had a basketball court in it. How They have mountaineers that scale it. None of that worked. The $20 did. Was this wrong of me? Do I care? well, yes it was, but no I don't. And he knew it was the amount of money he was gonna get to spend on snacks/sounviers for the day and way. Face saver for him. And when he got off all he said was, what's the big deal. For the record, I did NOT smack him. Non finger flick him in the ear! Wanted to , but didn't! Do note he hates roller coaster, except BTM which he claimes is a "Coaster-type" ride experience. He got that from Disney...

So I made him go on Space! I wanted value for my $$$ !

Now the last time he did SM at WDW he was all of 35 pounds and about 3 inches over the height req. He hated it. Nothing has been able to get him on it for over 6-8 years... and he expected to hate it this trip. HA! Mom is allways right ! The kid loved it. He forgot to blink, and claimed a lack of depth perception... wouldn't know about that, as I think he often has a lack of depth precption and can trip over his own 2 feet! We had walked on this ride also, they were letting everyone go in the fastpass line. And the ride is fast, fast and smooth.

Now one thing I had to do was the cars. And I have no idea why. So we did, and it is out of my system and I can wait for another 10 years till they redo them again...

About now we were running out of rides. Didn't want to do a lot of shopping, not a lot we really want/need, as if that ever stopped us before!! So it was time to head over to DCA.

And on this note I am going to go. Let anyone reading wonder what the "Tink Blinks !" is all about... If you have been this nice to read so far I promice to get back to it soon and finish up in the next day or 2!

Thank you , and see ya real soon!

Woops! I totally forgot to tell you all when Tink Blinks!

This happened the first night. I guess I am still overtired from the trip! Or maybe it is the left over excitement from that trip combined with the WDW trip we get to make next week. Either way , sorry!!!

So, when we finally got to bed I was laying there thinking how nice it all was, how excited I was, and what all we would do first thing the next morning. I remembered that the DLH has Tink on it and is "magic", and of course I want DH and DS to see it. So I look up at the ceiling. Sure enought, there is a glow. I point this out, " Look, Tink is flying around the room!". Ok, mom/hon, thats nice... Not the reaction I wanted..
And then I noticed that not only was she flying around the room but she was Blinking around the room. Well this was great! There was a bright green and red light up in the corner above our head blinking off and on.
"Look, Tink is blinking! Wow, wonder how they did that! Isn't it great?".. .
So DS looks, sighs and says" Mom, thats the smoke detector up there, NOT Tink! You think Tink has a red flashy light?, what is she mad or somthing?"

So of course as tired as I was this is historical, and I start to giggle, can't stop. I still think it was planned by Disney...Ok back to the middle of the next day...

We were headed off to DCA, but other rides kept gettin in our way... We hit Buzz, with DH in his own car, cause he outscores all of us and we didn't want to see that upclose and personal. Now that I am use to the Blaster being able to be picked up I think I am going to miss that at WDW. DS lost to both of us. And at one point I had outscored DH, then somehow he got like 200,000 points all at once. I am going with the theory that his score was inflated with an at home Buzz gamer that gave him the extra points. There is no way that he could have done that much better then me, don't care if he used to be a pistol instructor for the US Navy. That can't have any thing to do with his shooting!

We finally got headed over to DCA. Both guys thought that we would have to take the monorail over, but of course that wasn't possible since it only is going to DTD and back. So we hopped on over. And at first it looked like every one else had the same idea! The line was at least 50 or 60 people long and there was only 2 entrances open. But since they don't have the magic finger scan thingy it only took 3 or 4 min to get in. Now I know the finger squezey thingy at WDW takes a while, but I didn't realize just how much it backs the lines up!

Finally inside! Go to the toy shop to look for Potota Head parts, esp. the Gold Mickey hats for Mr.PH. They had them, but didn't want to stuff a box in front of DH...or carry it all the rest of the day! So the CM assured me that DTD World of Disney had them also. ( they were wrong.. had to run back the next day on the way out to stuff a box.. and hadn't had my hand stamped as we left DL... what a bother, I really am not a terrorist, but the CM thought so!)

Time to eat lunch as it was after 1 pm. But first hit Soarin'. This totally blew my AeroSpace EE/ME DH away. Not the ride, but the theaming into the ride! He had heard me raving about the intro into it, but then again, I am always raving, good and bad, about something, and he is kinda used to it! But with no one in front of us, it still took 15 -20 min to walk down the entry, and would have taken longer, but DS got a little bored with us reading each and every one of the photos. Why the same ride at WDW is not as well themed as this, I don't know! Ok, I do know it is supost to be a "modern" air terminal at the one at Ecopt, but come on! If Disney had really wanted to make it like a modern airline termianl they should have had a different store front every 10 to 15 feet of the line that offered the same over priced merchandise! That would at least give us all some thing to do while waiting in the WDW line! And be another way for Disney to get our money.... anyway the ride was fun, as usual. I grew up in Cal. and when we go on this ride I have to point out to DS where each and every thing is from... "Oh, look, there is Auntie Gail's house in San Diego... this is the orange grove near Unk. D's house.... I climbed up these falls at Yosimite.... see that..." And the good kid puts up with me!

Then we hit the Grizzly River Rapids. Love it! Didn't get to wet, much to DSs disapointment!

Off to the cheap looking rides on the way to Calif. Screaming! But first we had to ride the Spinny Ferris Wheel of Doom. The longest wait in line we had all trip. For what? 2 times around the wheel? And oh, yea, I am scared to death of heights. Only wanted to do this ride so I could prove something. ... have NO IDEA what I was proving! But I did!

Nothing, and I mean no amount of love, pouting, or more $$$ could get DS on the Cal. Screaming. He saw the loop and refused to go on. Even allmost offered to return the $20 from earlier in the day I had bribed him with. So I knew he didn't want to. We, however walked on, but had to wait for the second train to ride in the very front seats... Love this ride! So we did the single rider line. Walked on, DH was in front of me, and got on the first train. HA! I got the front seat again! With a quiet looking guy that asked if I had ridden it before, and wasn't it great? Well let me tell you, looks are deseiving! This quiet, glasses wearing, mild mannered man was a screamer! the entire ride was "AAAAAAAAAAAAAh!....OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHOOOOHH....EEEWAAAA" and more! I was so surprised all I could do was laugh! when he got off he kinda hung his head and nodded and slinked away. It was cute.

By now it was getting latish. DS wanted to hit GRR again so we did... got soaked! Honest to goodness, I think my DH is made of teflon! We SAW a wave of water come up over the side and hit him SMACK! and not a drop on him. DS and I were soaked! DH found this funny. We schuched around the park a little more and tried to deside if we had more we wanted to do at DL or wheither we should head over to the hotel. DL won! So we went and hit more rides at DL. Nothing special. No lines. I am so glad that every one was kind enought to stay home for us. I planned that you know, or so I told DH and DS. They thought it was normal!

One of the reasons we headed back to DL was for the great fireworks. I had spent several days telling them how nice the fireworks were and how we could see them and Fantiaia there... so of course the didn't have ANY fireworks the whole week! Or so we were told. Not that I cared what other day they didn't have them, since they didn't do them the one night we were there. And oh, goody, you will have them Fri, and Sat night. How nice. NOT!
So off to the hotel.

Now all day long we had looked for a BLT for DS.... which is funny as he doesn't eat tomatoes, or lettice on any other sandwich. Kids. But some time befor lunch I had mentioned BLTs and he said he liked them and I said me too. So we started hunting for one. HA! couldn't find one. Got to Guest Service at DLH and they called several places. Finally PP hotel said they could make us ones at the PCH grill, but we had to hurry. So we left DH at DLH and went over. Got the BLTs but they forgot the fries. Now I didn't care if I had fries, but when GS at DLH had called them they had said they would take a Club sandwich and adjust the price for a BLT. When we got there I was told "no way". Same price. And NOT more bacon! Well, ok, but at least don't forget the fries, and pickle. So we ended up with 4 boxes of food. 2 for the 2 BLTs and 2 stuffed with more fries then we could eat. Good BLTs! ok fries...

Next moring we had EE. No big breakfast that day. Went to Roaring Snacks at GCH instead. Great B'fast. Got into the park and started hitting rides. Did every thing we missed the day befor, which was all the kid rides. Alice, Mr Toad, you know. Some how DH and DS wern't as excited as I was about all this... But DS and I did all most make our selfs sick on the teacups so all was good for him! DH passed and stood shaking his head at us.

After hitting a few more rides we headed off to get the car and head for LAX to pick up the oldest DS for our DDs grad. I stop at WOD in DTD to stuff a PH box to get the gold MM hats... they don't have it! And we didn't get a hand stamp to re enter. So DS and I head off to DCA and a CM asks why we didn't get a hand stamp to get in? Well I tell her the story about the MrPh and she lets us in. I stuff a dozen hats in the box and as much other stuff as I can. Now at WDW I have stuffed a box so that it ends up weighting over 5 pounds, but there isn't as much parts at CDA as at WDW so I get the gold hats, and arms and gloves. DS asks "WHY do you need so many hats?" Told him I was goning to make earrings out of them... he rolled his eyes again!

Now remember that DDs grad form USC was the "offical" reason for this trip... so the family thought! Well DSs plane was 2 hours late, and DH turned to me and said " We could have stayed at the park for 2 more hours!!!" Guess my good influence is rubbing off on him!

And we did get DD all Graduated, with honors! So if any one knows of a well paying job for someone with a BS in International Realtions and Enviro Studies, that pays well enought for her to pay off the $$$ student loans, let us know! She would also like to have a job that requires travel and will keep her in LA for a while, is fluent in French, and has been working 3 jobs for the last 3 years.....
And I would like the winning numbers for any Lotto in the US with a prize of over several millions... And 4 weeks of DVC membership payed for by someone else... and a life time pass to ALL the Disney parks... a new car would also be nice, a Prius I think...

Thanks for reading!
Off to the self multiplying laundry and to pack for next weeks trip to WDW!
Whooopeee!

Your going to make earrings out of potato head hats? They seem pretty big for that! I did the potato head parts for my kids a couple weeks ago. I was able to get 42 pieces in to the box! But, your right, there isnt a huge selection, especially of the smaller parts. We have 3 and 4 of some things. The CM working in there told me they are getting a 2nd round rack of parts, and should have some new things. I'm hoping they get the Buzz parts like they have at WDW.

Big congrats to your dd! Glad you guys had a good trip.

Not really sure if I will make earrings out of the MrPH hats or not... it is just what I told my DS when I was getting so many! I did notice that DCA had the Tink and Ariel parts in a seperate bin, but not till I stuffed the box I had! Good thing I have them already!
All in all it was a great trip!

You found bipolar Tink. ;) That sounds exactly like something I would say and do (especially the giggling part).

I was smiling while reading your report. Thanks for sharing your trip. And those winning lottery numbers are 8..15....

I love your reports! So funny and your son reminds me of my son when he was 14. He's 17 now and loves WDW as much as me. Which is a whole lot!! We're off to DL for our first time in Sept and I can't decide if I want to brave renting a car and driving from LAX. I've heard it can be a pretty scary thing to try for a first timer. I do rent/drive in Florida with no problems. Plus, don't you have to pay for parking at the resorts? We're staying at DLH. Personally, I don't think any hotel/resort should charge for parking if you are staying there. Just seems wrong to me. But, I digress. Is the driving difficult and is it worth it to rent? I do want to go to Universal too.
Thanks for the awesome reports and information.
Kim

Enjoyed reading your reports ~ Thanx for sharing.

Tink03477, I grew up down there & learned to drive on those freeways so it is no big deal to me. I give most people advice driving down there, "Don't be in too much of hurrry!" All it takes is for someone to be on the side of the road to bring the whole thing to a standstill, in BOTH directions! :>o Also, make sure you have a passenger who can read a freeway map. The freeways go every which way & if you get on the wrong one you can find another one to get you back on track. Public transportation isn't the easiest, from my experiences. If you are staying at Disneyland & don't plan on going anywhere else then don't rent a car. But everything in greater LA/Anaheim areas is pretty spread out & even going to Universal in a taxi could be pricey. Just take deep breaths, not too deep on those smoggy days.
Hope that helps! ;>)

Also, Tink03477, make sure you leave for where ever you want way ahead of time... I also get a very good street map of LA and then one for each of the different towns I think I might drive in. That way when the freeway is at a total stand still I take back roads. Yea, the speed limit is only 25 to 50 MPH, but it beats standing still! I also grew up driving in LA/Ventura County area, and then in Japan... Wash.DC.... so as stated, as long as you take your time and don't rush you should be fine.

Also, check on line for any Cal.Dept of? road work, most LA news stations/TV stations have sites for current road conditions/accidents. A lot of the hotels will check for you and print out directions/or way to avoid problems.

Have fun!
