I am having a big delima today. My husband found that his job may or may not be terminated Thrusday. The economy here isn't terrific in his line of work right now and finding a new job will probably take time. He has been with this company for many years.

Anyhow, we have a Disney trip planned for Sept 08'. I am feeling really stuck right now because we have paid for ourselves and our best friends and their children (who have NEVER been to the world), and my In laws are going. I have done all the planning! I've scheduled ADRs, I've booked special things with Grand Gatherings. We have had planning parties with all of the Children going and watched videos to build excitment, and even bought bags and filled them with Disney Goodies for each child.

Now I am in panic mode because if hubby's job is terminated this week, I will have to cancel right? I can't really justify going to Disney during such a traumatic time. My 45 day mark is coming up July 31st, so I don't have a lot of time to play with the idea. If I was to cancel I wouldn't cancel my friends trip, but they really don't want to go with out us being as that they have 4 children, one a baby, and they have never been. Plus the ADRs, could they keep what I have made even though the number will be four people short?

AND HOW would I tell my kids we weren't going? I am just so upset. Can anyone lend some advice. I know you can see things clearly if your not so closely involved! Thanks Disers:sad1:

Big hugs for you!!! Crossing my fingers that your husband will not lose his job and that you will not have to worry about any of this. Best of luck!

Such a bad situation all around!!!! I and you should too, hope for the best for your husbands job. Mine might be layed off for 3 months coming in August. I'm keeping the faith that it will all work out for the best.

As for your trip...realistically you probably should cancel if he doesn't have a job. It will be sad and no fun at all but it's money you might need here shortly. Saying that...it's still your choice. Do what is best for your family. I'm sure your friends will understand the situation if you choose to cancel.

My sister just found her dream home and is contiplating on where or not to keep her Christmas trip to Disney since she knows they have so much to invest in the house now.

*praying for your family*

Are you on free dining? Is the vacation already fully paid? Since you have done goodie bags were you still planning on purchasing soveniers? How long is your vacation? Are you flying or driving?

Will your family need the money that you would receive as a refund? Do you have a safety net for situations like these?

If this was my family, and we had the vacation fully paid for including, gas, food, clothing, soveniers, hotel, etc and if we had a safety net (savings account) that we could use while my DH looked for employment - then I would say we would go and enjoy. Especially to ease the minds of the children - and reassure them even though daddy was out of work everything would be ok.

But this is a personal issue and only you and your husband know what is right to do for your family. Good luck! I hope everything works out well!

Thanks for all the hugs and advice. To answer some questions. Yes, the trip is paid in full and yes we have money put back for spending already. We wouldn't have to come up with anything additional for the trip. I was just concerned about not getting behind. We do have some money set aside, but I don't know how long that an float us. ??? There really are so many variables.

I think that I will keep praying and hope for the best for today. thanks again!

It might be better, as you said, to pray about it. Since you and your husband are familiar with the job market where you live - ya'll will probably be the best judges for whether you go or not. Good Luck! I pray everything works out for the best!

We're in a similar situation, though the hammer likely won't fall until September, and our trip is in 3 weeks. We are still going on the trip because we have the money set aside, and we have enough in savings that we could combine with unemployment benefits and make it for a year. If we had any less than that, I'd eat the cost of the airline tickets and cancel the trip.

My comfort zone is one year of money set aside, but yours may be different. I would suggest calculating what you need to live each month, what DH would receive in unemployment, and how long you could make it on that. Then decide if you are comfortable with that...which only you and DH can decide.

Good luck. I hope things work out for you.

Again, thank you. Since my last post my DH called and said that they have terminated 2 Project Directors today, but that the big wigs are fighting hard to keep him! We should know by the end of the week, but at least someone at the company is in his court! I have seen greater miracles than this happen...I will let you know what comes about!

Sit down and start writing.

Start with itemizing your assets and your bills.

Figure out how much money you can salvage if you cancel this trip and how much will disappear- if everything is paid for and a lot of it is unrefundable, it may be worth taking the trip. If you can still cancel and pay your bills for a month, keep that on the table as an option.

Figure out what else you can do to bring in money - are you a SAHM? If so, can you get a job? Write it down. Even cashiering at WalMart is money coming in - and that will extend your savings.

Figure out what you can do to save money - the Disney trip is on the table - what else can be.

We went through this years ago - my husband ended up not losing his job, but itemizing what we needed to do to make ends meet and get through helped me worry less. We also made some significant life changes as a result - we paid off our mortgage because I didn't want that bill over our heads. We have a LOT more in savings because I want a cushion. Being that scared was a good thing in the long run.

You'll be surprised at how well your kids will likely take belt tightening - even cancelling a Disney trip. "That's all right Mommy, we will go when Daddy gets a job."

Best wishes.

what about cancelling some of the trip extras instead of the whole trip? You said you've booked some extra grand gatherings stuff, so maybe cut those out and just do the rest of it to keep the trip and save some money at the same time.

Since your husband has been with the company for several years he might receive a nice severace package with several weeks of severace pay. I just lost my job of 10 years, 3 weeks before our trip, so I understand where you are coming from. Hang in there and keep pushing forward.

Since you have until the 31st of July to cancel I will hope and pray that your dh is not terminated from his job.

If he is terminated then I would cancel the trip until he found another job and would use the Disney money to not get behind on the necessities, especially with the cost of fuel and the increase cost of groceries.

I know you would have a hard time explaining to the kids but they are young and you could take them later this year or sometime next year when circumstances are not so uncertain. Believe me, it is a lot easier to wait for a trip then it is to see their parents worried about paying the bills.

Your friends and family would surely understand and they could either still go on their own or they could plan another trip with your family at a later date.

Sending you my best wishes,

if the trips already paid for then go

when i was 13 my dad quit his job 2 weeks before we were going, at first my mom didn't want to go but then my dad convinced her to go because it was already paid for. in the end we had a great time and we escaped our problems for a week.

Any chance that you could get a temporary job until the trip and sock every single penny of it away? If so, between that - and what you have in savings - you might still be able to make the trip (if all of it is paid for already)..

Whatever you choose, best of luck! :goodvibes

Maybe things will work out.

We built a new home last year, 2 weeks after we closed, DH got a letter his job was being terminated.

It was pretty scarey, to say the least.

But he got a new job last April with a way way better company. Sometimes when 1 door closes another opens.

Good Luck!
