DH has to have sinus surgery?

DH is scheduled this coming Monday for a sinus procedure (after years of congestion problems- I won't even start on the multitude of specialists and the VA doctors he has seen ).
Does anyone have any experience with a procedure called a septoplasty and SMR of turinates bilateral? It is scheduled to be a day surgery and a week recovery anticipated; any experiences with this anyone? He has suffered chronically with sinus headaches and congestion since 1983 (yes, at least 25 years!) and I am hoping this will give him some relief (and myself too- hard to watch someone you love suffer so much).

My DH had this done about 10 years ago. He was constantly having sinus infections and couldn't smell anything. The only problem was not being able to blow his nose for a couple of weeks. He had to wear a nose sling type thing under his nose for a few days. Since he has had this surgery the infections have stopped. Good luck to your DH on his surgery.

I had sinus surgery when I was 13 for a similar problem - constant congestion, nearly constant sinus infections, etc. Had to stay with my head back at a 45 degree angle for three days and change the gauze and such and bled a lot, hurt to laugh, etc but the end result was much better. I still have congestion (but also have allergies) but not nearly as bad and might get no more than one sinus infection per year, sometimes none. Well worth having the surgery.

I had similar surgery on a different part of my sinuses about 4 years ago. The first week of recovery was the worst but things are much improved since then. I only wish that I would have had both sides fixed at the same time. My other side that was not done acts up but after going through recovery the last time it will have to be much, much worse before I put myself, and my family, through that again. Sinus rinsing has been a big help to me. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I had a similar surgery performed in 1999, after years of chronic sinus infections. It was pretty easy, the worst part was the 'nose tampons' they packed my sinuses with after the procedure I had two strings hanging out of my nose, taped to my cheeks. For about a week I had moderate discomfort, but once things started healing and I could blow my nose again, recovery was quick. Invest in a few bottles of plain old saline nasal spray, it is great for keeping things cleaned out.

Good luck to your husband! My sinus infections pretty much disappeared, I hope he has equally positive results.

My husband had sinus surgery. I don't remember the type. He had congenitally small openings. The ENT threw in a nose job at the same time-shaved his nose. so after the swelling went down, he could breathe easier and he was purdy.
