Yes folks, they really DO enforce the handheld cell phone law in New York every once in a blue moon. DH got nabbed yesterday while talking to DD on the phone.

I always knew if they caught anyone, it would be him. He uses it all the time in his truck. He even has the hands-free set, but rarely uses it.

Just a heads up for anyone out there that doesn't think they'll get caught.;)

I keep hoping that my husband will get a ticket for that, he spends hours with his clients on the cell phone, while he is driving all over the state of MI. He has a hand's free set and he refuses to use it. Says it makes him look like a "receptionist". Like that is a bad thing *bop*.

I figure the only way to break him is for him to get a ticket.

We have the onstar phone in one of our cars and I love that, no phone to bother with, at any rate. He doesn't have that in his work car, though.

when they first passed the law in NYC. Oh well! I don't use it in NY anymore LOL!

That is one law I'm glad that they do enforce. I've had people trying to dial their cell phones almost swerve into me a few times. A few weeks back I was sitting at a red light and a cop pulled up along side of me and motioned to the man on his cell phone next to me to pull over. He gave him a ticket :)

I don't know... I see hundreds of people talking on their phone while driving and many do seem to be less focused on the driving than they should be. Unfortunately, I also see some cops doing the same thing.

I have never gotten a ticket, but a NYC cop told me to get off the phone over his PA and I was stopped at a light at the time.

It's scary seeing the things people do while driving. The craziest is watching women do their make-up in the rear view mirror!

Not that I am glad your hubby got a ticket but my first thought was GOOD I am glad they are enforcing it in some areas. I see peopel on theirs constantly and it drives me crazy. My favorite drivers are those with one hand on the cell phone by their head and the other hand with a cigarette in it. 2 fingers on the wheel. UGH! I wish they woudl enforce the rules stricter here.

I was caught talking to my sister on the Belt Parkway to Long Island and it was a big mess. I lost the ticket had to pay a bond to avoid being arrested(Thank You Chrissy) and then had to appear in court

That's just it, I see people juggling their cell phone, their coffee and their cigarette - while switching lanes on the Thruway - drives me nuts. The cops generally seem to ignore it, and yes, I see the cops on handheld cell phones all the time.

I just hope DH learned his lesson. I can't wait to see what the fine turns out to be.

I have and use a lot my hands free set. I use it at work too. Crazy but I talk to my hubby on my cell phone while doing other things.

What's next????? getting stopped for eating at McD's????? getting a ticket for singing with the radio ????? laughing with your kids while driving?????

That law was put there, in my opinion, for 2 reasons....
1) THE MONEY GRAB
2) Some uptight lawyer (or their spouse) probably got cut-off by some jerk who was driving recklessly who also happened to be on the phone (oh yeah, the reckless driver was also probably eating McD's, listening to the radio, and his kids were in the car goofing around). Now he/she feels the need to punish the rest of us.

Sorry for the vent, but that law ticks me off.

Well Dave, I do agree with one thing - it's a money grabber, and here in the great state of New York (they don't call it the Empire State for nothing - as every empire starts with money), they are sucking every last dime out of us at every possible chance. Oh, how I can't wait to live somewhere else.;)

Some guy beeped at me for checking my voicemail while driving in STANDSTILL traffic. Gave me a dirty look. Yes, its against the law, and I don't normally do it. I won't do it while in motion, but if traffic is absolutely not moving and I get a voicemail, I'm gonna check it, I don't need other drivers telling me what to do.

Sorry, venting. I hardly ever use it, but its good they actually enforce some laws. I always see people on their cells though.

So, when are they going to ticket people who talk on their cell phones in public places?? I had to listen to this lady babbling on and on in the super market yesterday. Whatever happened to common courtesy and thinking about the people around you???

Ok, rant over. :)

Jill

When I get in the car, I put on the seatbelt and stick the earbud in my ear, unless I have passengers. I did get a warning ticket about 5 years ago or so FOR USING it. At that time, it was ilegal to use an earpiece, a carryover from the Walkman days and before the cell-phone earbuds were popular. Now it is a law you must, LOL. I have used one for many years now.

Just today I was wondering how many people see cell phone users breaking the law on a daily basis. It's insane.

I hope you understand my feeling that it's about time that this law is being enforced. I see way too many erratic drivers and 9 times out of 10, they're on their cell phone.

George - even scarier is what those same women look like WITHOUT make-up...

when are they going to ticket people who talk on their cell phones in public places?

I agree, Jill. I detest when Mr. or Ms. J.Q. Public approach my desk, ask a question and then answer their phone while I'm responding to their inquiry. Then minutes later they say, "Sorry," but still don't power the phone off. When really irked, I pick up my cell phone and have a "pretend" conversation which always outlasts their rudeness by several minutes...

Beast fan - aside from McDs which might kill you via cholesterol, nothing you mentioned compares to the lethal consequences of talking on a hand-held cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. Driving is a priviledge. Driving responsibly is essential. I hope you never lose a loved one to a preoccupied driver...
