So, DH is FINALLY cleaning out all his old USN paperwork- retired over 7 years now-and we are finding tons of stuff. Mostly junk, of course.

However, at the bottom of a box of Military stuff he found a WDW EPCOT Center Guide Book, 1988! Compliments of Eastman Kodak Company. It shows several things that look so funny compared to now! It shows Wonders of Life openign in 1989. Odyssey Restaurant-featuring Hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages. The Garden Grill is" a unique restaurant., offers a changing views of America. Sandwiches, regional sandwiches, regional pizzas(?),steaks, poultry, and seafood, in sample or entree portions. Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner."

Also there is a Stargate Restaurant. No idea where it was...

They suggest you use the WorldKey(? no idea!) service and make resergvations as early in the day as possible- some things never change!

Also" Note: Proper attire is required. Shoes and shirts must be worn at all times in ECOPT Center and aboard all transportaton vechicles. No flash photography, eating, drinking,or smoking is allowed in any Ecopt Center attraction. No food or drink may be brought into Ecopt Center."

Several things I do remember.. not from then, but latter.
Magic Eye Theater- George Lucas presents"Captain EO", featuring Micheal Jackson.
The photo of this if great!

World of Motion, "a rib-tickling ride through the evolution of transportation and see just why "It's Fun to be Free!" "

Transcenter- preview the future's transportation innovations today.

The Harvest Theater, Harvest Tour, this was a 45 min walk through the Land greenhouses. The Grill Room was called "The Land Grill Room".

Mexico had La Famillia Fashions- Women's and childrens tradtional clothing and silver jewlery.

Le Cellier " Buffeteria service for lunch and dinner. Candian fare such as pork pie and rib roast. Labatt's beer and ale."

England had a store called Lords and Ladies, franrance and bath accessories. Pipes, tobacco products, mementos and gift items. Is it something else now? and they had Pringles of Scotland- selling Sweaters, woolens, authentic Scottish tartan kilts ties, and accessories. Wheelchair and stroller replacement. ( or so it says... ?)

The brochuer then goes on to tell us about "The Total Vacation Destination:The Walt Disney World Resort."
It has seven(!) Sensational Resorts!
Dinner shows includeed "Broadway at the Top" a Broadway style revue at the Contemporay Resort. The "Polynesian Revue" and " Mickey's Tropical Revue" both at the Polly. Village Resort.

They have the 'swimming hole" at River Country. And tell us about the fully-accredited zoo at Discovery Island, which is presented by Gaines Foods, Inc.

The Disney Marketplace is only open 10am-10pm.

It then asks " Guess What's Next?"And tells us that Disney-MGm Studios , Typhoon Lagoon, and Dreamflight in Tomorrow-land at the Magic Kingdom. Also Pleasure Island, which says it will have 6 innovative nightclubs with dining (!), as well as scores of shops!, all housed on a six acre island that was once the mythical empire of a ship-building enterpreneur, Meriweather Adam Pleasure.( So the island was named after him? and not from the Pleasure Island in Pinoccone Movie....at least Disney said so in 1988!)
Wonders of Life was to have "Body Wars"/ "CraniumCommand" /""Fitness Fairgrounds"-where were presented with a collection of exhibits and events where you can visit a fun house of the five sences. and explore"Frontiers of Medicine" where you could "recieve an analysis of your health habits, try out electronically enhanced exercises, and join the theatrical fun provided by "the Anacomical Players"(? what was that?!)
All to open in 1989!!Opening dates subject to change.. so they said....what else is new there?

It finishes up on the back page with an Advert. for the DVD, "Cindrella" -To be availabel for only a limited time only! And wants you to sign up today for the Disney Channel- call 1-800-722-6003 and get $10 back! The entire back cover is for Kodacolor Gold Film.

Sorry this was so long. But I though some of you might like to take a stroll down memory lane. It looks a lot different then the brochures today. Hope you all got a good laugh or a fond memory out of this. Must put it up and not lose it.

I am sure that was a "neat" find. I have kept my guide maps from our trips. Mine goes back from our honeymoon in 1994. That is when MK still had the Skyway to Tomorrowland. They are fun to look back at. It is amazing to see the changes. :)

The World Key was a service like PS [ADR]. At the front of what is now Future World were a bank of phones. You just picked up a phone and spoke with a CM. The CM asked which World Showcase restaurant you would like to eat in that night and at waht time and then the CM would tell you if it was available. If it was you could make a reservation, if not you got to check another restaurant or another time. I believe that this could only be done same day and only from these phones.

Wow! From World Key to AP's to what ever it is now... ADR's? How the times do change!

StarGate Restaurant used to be in communicor EAST. It served Hamburgers and Pizza. Sunrise Terrace used to be in the West side serving chicken and fish, ect. I don't know when things changed, but they were called those names in 1986. :Pinkbounc

Well, my mercenary heart jumps to the concept of "How much would that sell for on Ebay??"

You know, I did think of that and just a few seconds ago got out of ebay's web site. Never did find anything like it, but I did find a ton of other stuff..

And I don't think we would sell it. Of course if we were offered an indescent amout of $$$$$ we would, but no one would want old paper that bad! Maybe in another 17 years....

A little back story here. I asked my DH when/where he got it from. Duh.
We were living in Japan with the USN then. We had lived in Gainsville, Fl for a year while he was in Grad.School at UF before being sent to Japan. But we never had the time or money to make that "long" drive with a then 2+ yoDD and 1yoDS... to much $$, time and we thought at the time to far...

Well about 2 years latter HE got to go back to Jacksonville Fl for a USN confrence... and a few of them had Sat. off and they all went to WDW. I never remembered( well for the last 4-5 years!) that till he told me tonight! And then I DID remember how really, really MAD I was that he got to go and I did not! First of all he got to go back to the US, alone, with out 2 little kids... and then he went to MY favorite place, a Disney Park! I can still feel mad! And he has gone up to bed, and I am STILL stewing about that missed trip he made with out ME!

On a brighter side, I was so upset when he got back to Japan that he took me to the first of many, many trips to Tokyo Disneyland. And then back to Disneyland/Ca. And I think I used his WDW trip as guilt to get him to take us on the first family trip to WDW...

So it is all good. However I think I need a SOLO trip. AKL? 14th Floor at the Contemp? Hummm, he does still take business trips to Japan, so maybe I can pout a trip along with him....

That burning smell is all the wheels burning and turning in my little skeeming ole mind! Wish me luck?!

Man, do I miss this sevice! It was GREAT! Not only did you talk to a CM, you saw them too. It was a like a video phone. You could call there by Spaceship Earth, (You can still tell where they phones use to be.) and there was bank of phones in the world showcase area. I belive there is an area there by Germany that still has the place where the phones use to be. I think they turned that one into something else.

It was nice just to pick up the phone and get your PS, while you were in the park. Then haveing to go to the resturant or Guest Servies to make a PS, like you have to do now.

Le Cellier " Buffeteria service for lunch and dinner. Candian fare such as pork pie and rib roast. Labatt's beer and ale."

Le Cellier was great back then. It wasn't exactly a buffet, more like a cafeteria. They had some delicious things on the menu that I wish they would bring back.

WorldKey was awesome. We loved it too. I also remember the buffeteria thing in Canada - I think it was only our first family trip that it was like that.

I still have my Disney souvenier book from when they opened in 1971. I could'nt part w/it to sell on E-bay. It brings back such childhood memories everytime I open it.

What a treasure. Depending on the condition, you could probably sell that on ebay to a die-hard Disney/EPCOT fan for a nice chunk of change. :teeth:

Yeah...world key was cool. Forgot all about it. If your dinner reservation was messed up, you knew who to look for! It did make Epcot feel like a more modern park.

Thanks for sharing this -- it brought back great memories of my trip there to celebrate my HS graduation in 1986 -- first trip away from home w/o parents :teeth:

Anyway, I remember the WorldKey video phones. This was the one thing my friends and I told EVERYONE about! We thought this was the coolest, most futuristic thing ever. I recall at opening of the park, people running to the terminals to get their reservations in. And the CMs who talked to you always tried to make some mention of what you looked like or were wearing to emphasize the fact that they could see you! Right then, no kidding, they were looking right at you! Really to this day, I remember the magic of this. It was more amazing to us than some of the rides!

World Key does sound cool, kinda a pre dated video/computer link up call?

I also found an article on the Discovery Island at AllEarsNet. Did not realize that the island was still open till the 90's, I think it said! Anyone ever go to that place?

I spent a lot longer re-reading the Guide last night... I was surprised to remember the Captain EO show. I saw it at Disneyland, not at Ecpot, and it was the coolest thing ever-then!

Mentioned the ebay option to DH, he just did what we here fondly call "The BOB LOOK". One eyebrow raised and an eye stare/look that kinda goes throught you... It has taken me years to get the suttle differences of that look. And last night it said, "Why? Who would really pay for that? And..... Hummm how much ya think we could get for it....?" He is very , ?carefull?,(cheap, frugle) with money. Thank Goodness- I can save more $$ for WDW trips this way!

Wonder who else out there in DIS world has some old park Guides that has things we have forgotten? I hope some will post the fun/different things they find!

I went to Discovery Island in 1993. We were staying at Fort Wilderness, so it was a quick & easy hop over. It was a nice, relaxing afternoon.

I have my Ticket Book from 1973, along with some postcards & brochures from other area attractions. No MK map tho :( I also have a book on Epcot from 1983 that my DH gave me from his trip down there with my Stepson.

I wouldn't DREAM of selling that stuff - It means too much to me!

You will appreciate my horror while watching a TV show called Clean Sweep yesterday. The basic idea of the show is that the "Clean Sweep" team comes into a messy house where the owners have way too much stuff. The team helps them sort thru their stuff (usually FORCES them), makes them get rid of most of it and then organizes their rooms to hold their much smaller bunch of stuff.
In this episode (I actually found a link! ) the owner was a Disneyland CM and had a whole lot of stuff that was limited edition and/or he got by being a CM (ride opening pins, Hoilday posters, etc). Most of the stuff the actually wanted him to THROW OUT!!!!! :earseek:
When he said the stuff was worth money, the team members got that same "Bob" look and actually said things like "No one is going to want an old pin you wore when -------- ride opened. Throw it in the garbage" and, when he had some cups from Fantasyland that are designs no longer in use, the said, "No wonder they're not in use anymore, they are all in your house. Throw them in the garbage."
The poor guy tried to bargain with them that if they let him keep it boxed in the garage until the next big Disney show, he promised to sell everything, but the one host (Peter) got really mad at him. He was only allowed to keep 2 baskets of stuff (I will admit he had way too much). One the features of the show is that they hold a garage sale to sell off the "extra" belongings and then the rest is donated to charity. I think the owner got his revenge when their garage sale made a lot more money than the usual sale on that show (I think they made around $900, when they usually get around $300). I also think the owner had his mother buy back some stuff for him (she spent $120).
My DD and I were trying to get a good enough look at anything to see if we could find any like it for sale on ebay, but they didn't really show anything long enough.
