She's just not healing as fast as she should.. :( She'll have a good day and then a SUPER bad day.. Today is a good day - yipee - but the school will not allow her to come back on medications (understandable) and they can not provide the diet that she still needs (again - understandable)..

She's getting pretty sick of ice cream, yogurt, cottage cheese, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, pudding, soft pasta, and scrambled eggs.. We spoke to the doctors office on Friday and they reiterated that she MUST stay on that diet until the scabs come off.. She wants NOTHING to do with popscicles.. She is drinking lots of water (doesn't want juice and says the milk "tastes funny"..)

Any other SOFT diet suggestions? I made jello, but she doesn't want it..

Oh - and another side note.. Her voice has changed and I have to say, it's the cutest darn thing.. Reminds me of when she was very little.. :) I know that eventually it will go back to what it was, but it's absolutely adorable right now.. Well - except when she's screaming in pain, that is..

We also called her teacher on Friday and she said there's no problem - she is not behind in her work - and even if she misses more, she's smart enough to whip through it in no time flat.. She even took the time to talk directly to my DGD on the phone and that made her very happy..

We're aiming to get her back there in time for the Valentine's Day party on the 14th, so keep your fingers crossed!

what did she have done? i had jaw surgery and once i got unwired (6 weeks on an all liquid diet) i was stuck with soft foods for another 6 so i might have some ideas. you mention "scabs", does she have any stitches or aluminum wires in her mouth (belive me-it does change the taste of stuff, and some stuff BURNS that you would'nt think did).

let me know and i'll try to come up with some ideas.

My goodness; they have certainly changed things since my two had their tonsils/adnenoids out. They both spent one night in the hospital (they are 36 and 42 now, so it was a while ago)

My daughter was just less than three; she came home early the next morning and ate scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast.

My son was five; he came home early the next morning and had sausage and toast for breakfast.

Neither of them had a minute's problem after that.

I'm so sorry your dgd is in so much pain!

What about soup, maybe at room temp so it does not burn her throat? Poor little thing, hope she's back to normal real soon :) Make sure she stays home until she is completely healed. I read your post about her having her tonsils out and though it's routine surgery I always worry when I hear little ones are having them out. I had mine removed when I was 5 yrs old and did not heal properly. Turns out I had a septic infection set in and it settled in my hip. I had to have emergency surgery and the orthopedic surgeon was truly an angel and saved not only my leg but my life. The ped. kept prescribing antiobiotics which masked the infection. The theory is that he used an unsterile instrument when removing my tonsils but my parents never persued legal action because all they wanted was for me to get better. I don't mean to scare you, my issue was isolated but it is important to fully heal and make sure the immune system is strong before exposing yourself to others and whatever they may be carrying. Prayers to your DGD for a speedy recovery :)

Yup - forgot to mention she's eating chicken noodle soup.. It's the only kind she really cares for.. On one of her good days she actually ate two cans of it! :)

:grouphug: Hugs for your DGD and hoping that she feels better soon!

She had her tonsils and adenoids taken out a week ago yesterday.. They used the laser surgery, but the nurse stressed over and over again that not all children heal at the same rate..

The other good thing that came of this conversation with the doctors office is that they put my name in the computer as being able to call and ask questions of the nurse and/or doctor after my DD explained that I'm the one who is taking care of her every day.. (HIPPA laws regulate who they can and can't speak to..)

C. Ann,
No real suggestions other than maybe milkshakes eaten with a spoon or some really really thin sandwhich meat. I do have to say watch the scab thing. It's soo scary when they come off before they should. I had mine out last summer at 26 and mine come off unexpectedly. What about just warm soup like ABC,123s or chicken and stars? Something that she just can sip but has a bit of texture. Also for something else to drink, they gave me some protein drinks because I needed the extra protein and iron. They aren't that bad and its something different. I hope she is better soon.

Yes - the nurse expressed over and over how serious this could be and spoke of an incident where a child almost bleed to death during the night and had a stomach full of blood by the time he woke up screaming his head off..

We averted a close call here just the other night.. My son-in-law's dad was here and we caught him just in time before he handed my DGD a piece of Kentucky Fried Chicken - CRUNCHY no less!! He got very offended when we told him she absolutely could NOT have those sort of foods - said it was "hog wash - the poor kid is hungry" - left in a huff and hasn't been back since.. :confused3

My DS had this surgery about 4 years ago. I do agree every kid is different. He was 8 and it took the full 2 weeks to recover. My friends DD had the surgery the day after my DS and she was 4 and recovered within days.

He did have to stay on a soft diet, but I was able after a week to give him soft bread with PB or jelly. And french toast.

He lost about 12 pounds. I feel for your DGD, when my DS was recovering, I felt horrible and wondered what I had done to him. But looking back it was the best thing we ever did.

I hope she feels better soon. :grouphug: to you and your family.

What about mac and cheese - or even hot dogs cut up in small pieces? Maybe pork and beans?

The ENT that did my DD's tonsils and adenoids really recommended to not give her too much dairy stuff, i.e.milkshakes & ice cream, since that causes a higher likelihood that the recovering patient would cough and not allow the scabs to heal.

Hope she is feeling better soon! Took my DD (when she was 4) about a full 2 weeks before she was feeling really better.

warm (not hot) stuff felt wonderful in my mouth when it was stitched from end to end. warm broth, strained soups, instant grits (once i got unwired) were very soothing. mashed potatos and gravy felt great and i loved homemade rice pudding with raisins (put tons of egg yolks in it for extra calories). instant jello before it has set can be a drink.

i had to steer clear of any juices with an acidy content (they stung and made for a metalic taste) but i enjoyed grape and cranberry.

with any type of stitches and scabs in the mouth or throat steer clear of straws even after it appears to be healed-the pressure it puts on the affected area can cause a delay in healing or tearing.

When my son had his tonsils/adenoids removed (around age 5), the doctor told me the day of the surgery, he'll do fine for about 5 days or so, and then he'll probably have some pain. Sure enough, he acted perfectly normal, then around the 5th day, he'd be sitting there as fine as he could be and just start screaming and holding his mouth. He would also wake up in the middle of the night screaming in pain.

I called the doctor, and they just told me to try to get liquids down his throat, but the only thing that seemed to really help was time. It was about two weeks after surgery before things returned to normal. I was EXHAUSTED!

How about drinks like Ensure? Even slim-fast type shakes and the like may be good, and they are high in protien.

just more pixie dust for your DGD to heal qiuckly :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

oh and when Erica had hers out a few years ago it was about 2 weeks also for full healing
the funny thing is her voice changed a bit too but never went back to normal
it stayed at the new sound :confused3

Awww, I hope she is feeling better soon. It sounds like your DGD is very lucky to have you with her. :goodvibes

My DD had big slushies per day from the corner store. the cold really made her throat feel good. No straw though...she used a spoon then drank the rest.

Hope she feels better soon!!!

gosh, I hope she starts to feel beter soon....I know my DD took about 2 weeks off of school. I tried to send her back after 10 days, but she ended up coming home early ~ she was just still to wiped out. She was gtting sick of the soft foods diet and was as thin as a rail to begin with. I started to give her Ensure type drinks just to get some nutrients into her.

And your SIL's dad... :sad2: ....I know I already told you my story about the fudge brownies someone brought my DD and caused her scab to fall off prematurely. Good thing you caught him before she took a bite!

Actually it was my SIL that caught him.. I was here - as was her other Grandma - but we weren't in the room at that exact moment.. I'm SOOO glad that my son-in-law was the one that caught his Dad because he really got highly offended and hasn't come back since.. (Normally he comes over every day..) If it had come from me, I think it would have been even worse.. :( We tried to expalin to him - and I even told him about your incident with the brownies - but he insisted it was "hog wash" and left in a huff..

I talked to the other Grandma yesterday - and relayed all the info from the nurse (including how serious the nurse said the bleeding could be if she ate the wrong food) - so hopefully she relayed that info to her DH.. It will be interesting to see if Grandpa shows up today - he usually can't go this long without seeing her..

I don't know how my DGD feels about the change in her voice, but I have to tell you, I LOVE it - just sounds so darn cute.. LOL

C.Ann, I don't remember much about my DS getting his tonsils/adenoids out being it was 21 years ago and the memory really is first to go but I do remember his voice being different, too. It was so cute.

 to your DGD and hope she starts feeling better real soon.
