Detroit Airport

Hello,

We are flying out of Detroit Airport for the first time and I was wonderig how safe is Detroit and what areas I should avoid. We will be staying at the Marriott Detroit Airport prior to our flight.

Any information would help.

I can't really help you with which areas of Detroit to avoid

We always fly out of Detroit but we generally drive straight to the airport from the border, or to a hotel near the airport.

It takes about half an hour to get to the airport area from the bridge in Windsor.

We've never had any problems doing that, and I don't really feel unsafe while we are doing it.

Better to use the bridge than the tunnel because it puts you directly onto interstate highways. Stay on the interstate system until you get to the airport area and you'll be fine. The suburbs around the airport are nothing like the inner city of Detroit.

You're not near the downtown core of Detroit, so no worries. The airport is about 30 mins out of Detroit. It's fine.

Just make sure you have a full tank of gas before crossing the Ambassador Bridge... kidding!

I can't tell you how often we sit at the border waiting to get back from Casino Windsor on Friday nights, we've had a few close calls with gas. Worth it for the atmosphere though. Much nicer than the casino's downtown.

To OP, I live about 10 minutes away from the airport, and the neighborhood is nothing to worry about.

what is the Detroit airport like? is it big? confusing to get around? What terminal do planes to Orlando usually fly out of? For my November trip, I transfer planes in Detroit and I'm just wondering what to expect when I'm there. I have a 2 hour layover.

The Detroit Airport is very easy to figure out. You're probably going to the Smith terminal. Most of the major airlines are there. It's well laid out and there are a couple of restaurants in it including a Coney island Fries and a Starbucks. There were a couple of gift shops too if I recall.
