Detroit Airport Hotel?

We are flying from Detroit in August and the airbus from London to Detroit is really pricey so I am looking into driving down the night before the flight and parking my vehicle. The only problem is that when I did a search for a park and fly hotel near the airport most of them only let you park for 14 days and we will be gone 16 days. Has anyone out there done this? I can only find threads on flying from Buffalo. I live near London and Detroit is closer. Is it worth the extra drive time to fly from Buffalo? I haven't finalized our flight yet so I could switch.
I must admit I am a bit worried about leaving my vehicle parked somewhere in Detroit for over 2 weeks but like I said the airbus prices are high and last time I found the drive to Detroit in the airbus very long and crowded!
I would appreciate any help! :goodvibes

I hear you about the Robert Q. It's way more for us to take it than to stay, even if we stay at the Airport Westin (which is FAB by the way). I looked all the stuff up too about the park and fly and for some of them I think you can pay a per-day rate after your deal runs out if you tell them in advance. I think we did that once before when we stayed somewhere near the hotel. This time we will likely just stay at the Westin b/c we'll ahve 2 small kids and we'll be leaving at 7:30 or something crazy, and the hotel is attached right to the terminal so that makes it easier. Good luck! :)

I have used a park and fly service in Detroit 2 times before.
We used Qwik Park and stayed at La Quinta (VERY reasonable!!)

Both times we left our vehicle for 10 days, had an 8-night free parking with our hotel stay and even used a "one night free" internet coupon. We ended up paying cash for the one extra night of parking.

I think as long as the parking facility is fenced, well-lit and has security cameras, you'll be fine leaving your vehicle there!!

So, if you need 16 nights and the hotel package covers 14 of those nights, you'll just pay for the extra 2 nights when you actually drive out of the parking lot on your way home. I don't think you'll even have to tell anybody what your plans are because they just take your voucher(s) when you drive out and you pay the extra.

I wouldn't worry about parking in Detroit. It's like any other airport parking in a big city. Just make sure you're using a reputable, secure parking lot company.

I hope that helps!!

The last time we drove from London we stayed at the Baymont. I think we had to pay for an extra day, but the room was relatively clean.

We're going again next month, and we're looking at staying at the HoJo - US$60/night, a week's free parking ($6/extra day) and their facility has a gated and fenced parking area, which many of the hotels don't have. The HoJo doesn't seem to limit parking to a maximum number of days.

Go to the Sleep, Park, Fly website and click on the Detroit link from the home page if you haven't already been there. You'll see a lot of options available there.

We stayed at the Howard Johnsons also. As was mentioned, they have gated parking which only the shuttle drivers can enter (so when you park and pick up your car they have to let you in). This feature was what steered us towards HoJo. Other than that it is just your run of the mill, inexpensive, nothing fancy hotel with free shuttle service.

We drove to Detroit and parked on the BIG BLUE DECK, you will see signs to it at the airport. It is $6 USD per day.

We also stayed at the Westin at the airport and had a marvelous time. We checked in and left our car there until we got back to Disney. It was a seriously amazing hotel and also, we saw Cedric the Entertainer (Movie - Barber Shop) while we were there.

It was really a great experience...

Thank you everyone! I have lots of options available now. I can always rely on the DIS boards for any help planning our trip! Now just pray for a quiet hurricane season! ;)

Have done this tons of times since we live across from Detroit and only fly out of Metro. Most of the lots are gated and secure as they are not run by the hotels themselves, they are private companies that each of the hotels sends their guests to. As mentioned above, HoJo has their own gated, and secure lot but they do not check on cars, and they are not responsible for any damages - same as the other lots. All of the other lots are gated and secure too - it may be more convenient for you as you won't have to worry about a shuttle, but this is not anything special over the other lots and shouldn't make or break your decision to stay there. I'm not sure about HoJo specifically, as we haven't stayed there, but it's a very basic hotel. Good hotels are:

1) Comfort Suites
2) Hilton - Garden In, Doubletree or Suites
3) Marriott - Fairfield, Courtyard or Marriott Resort
4) Westin

There are other good ones, but we have stayed at these, or checked them out, and they are all great. Close and secure parking lots, 24 hour shuttle and some include free breakfast.

As mentioned, you can buy extra parking at a reduced rate from hotel directly when you check in, or pay rack rate when you pick car back up. Park n' Fly packages usually aren't online either, so you usually have to call hotels directly. Go to hotel websites, or Detroit Metro Airport website, and you can get the list.

Happy vacationing, Tiger

We have flown out of Detroit numerous times and parked there. The hotel in the airport is very nice!! Call the airport for more information. They were extremely helpful to us. Since this airport was refurbished it is very easy to navigate and well organised. I'd just phone about the parking issue and stay at the hotel in the airport the night before your flight. Have a great trip!

The Hilton Suites is very nice at the airport. It was refurbished last year. We have stayed there twice and have been very impressed.

Hi folks ... just reactivating a very old thread. Can't find the more recent ones(computer's very slow so my DSis sent me the link to this old one). We're looking for a park'n'fly for Aug 21st. We don't get back until late Sept 1st, so basically need 12 days of parking. I used the Sleep/Park/Fly website and here's what I have for prices - I already calculated the extra days of parking:

Howard Johnson's - $92
Baymont Inn - $110
Best Western - $112
Comfort Inn - $120

Looks like the Best Western is the only one with a pool.

Can anyone please answer the following:

- experiences with any of these hotels??? I seem to remember someone saying how absolutely dirty the HoJo's was???

- Other than HoJo's which has it's own lot, anyone know if the others have their own lot as well, or if the hotel just has a deal with an independant Park'n'Fly lot? I know that La Quinta uses Quik Park.

- can I book the Park'n'Fly deals on-line or do I have to call the hotel directly? I know for the Sleep Inn in Buffalo, I had to call.

- our flight is at 8AM - what time should we be at the airport? We're flying Airtran and already have our assigned seats.

TIA for the help ... :goodvibes

The HoJo doesn't haven't it's own parking site it also uses the Quik Park lot and as I've stated before stay away from HoJo!!! It was awful and falling apart when we used it this past March/April! Ughhhh.............:headache:
