Hello group!

I was just wondering if any of you have ever gotten a 'designer dog'? My son is wanting a schnoodle and they really are actually quite cute. From what I've gathered the labradoodle is the most popular - but he wants a smaller dog.

There is also a place I found that registers these dogs and provides complete pedigree information on them. It's at http://scbca.tripod.com - Specialty Canine Breeders Club of America.

Papers are not important to me....but to a kid....you know how it goes.....lol

My mother has a schnoodle and he is so cute. Not truly considered a pure bred so no papers.

Realize you are getting a mixed breed dog, even if the parent lineage is known. Mixed breeds are wonderful and often have the best qualities of both breeds. That said, you should not have to pay a significant amount for a mixed breed dog. You might check your local shelters, SPCA and rescue organizations and be able to find a schnauzer/poodle mix that needs a loving home. Also, check petfinder.org. I found my rescue Scottie through them. I know Scots sometimes come up mixed with poodle. You might want to search under schnauzer first since poodles are so popular.

I looked at the sight you linked. It could be decades before the AKC MIGHT recognize these mixes as a breed of its own. Unless you are planning for future breeding of animals that may never be recognized, I would not think papers would be important. Especially if you are wanting a pet. Good luck finding your pup. I know folks with schnauzers and poodles who love them as family pets.

Get a dog that needs a home. I got my purebred labbie at the shelter -- no papers but I LOVE him. Check rescue sites, there are so many dogs that need a loving family, it is heartbreaking.

I agree with Jockaroo. No matter what that site says, a mixed breed is a mixed breed. These pet stores that try and sell cockapoos for something like $500.00, please give me a break. The AKC is mixed breed phobic, IMOP. Mixed breeds are not allowed to compete in any of their venues such as obedience or agility. And to compete in confirmation, the dog must still be intact. The AKC is very old fashioned in their thinking, so I don't see them registering mixed breeds anytime soon. I agree, look into a shetler, so many need homes.

A friend at work has a cockapoo and it is the absolute most sweet little dog I have ever seen. Very good with his two kids.

It is true that the AKC will not register mixed breeds and that mixed breeds are not allowed to compete in conformation. I also agree that charging large amounts of money for a mixed breed dog is ridiculous. However, any old mutt can compete in obedience and agility. Some of the best students in the obedience and agility classes I have attended have been mixed breeds. Those guys just loved to do their tricks!

Please understand that there are over a million dogs/cats that are euthanized in this country every year and they are not just mixed breeds... the purebred dogs that end up in the shelters are getting put to sleep as well.
There are small breed dogs that are available in every area, all year long. I personally have 3 min pin puppies, 2 adult females and 1 adult male that are available for adoption... and I work with a rescue group, these are not dogs that I bred and they are not for sale... they are available for adoption. We have had chihuahuas, schipperkes, poms, corgis, jack russels, even a few yorkies... they're all available and they all need good homes. Please check out www.petfinder.com to find a dog suitable for your family. On Petfinder, you can search for the breed/mixed breed of dog that you want.
Good luck finding the perfect furbaby :)
