Deposit/Payment question...

First off, I've made no decisions about anything yet - there is still plenty of time before my final payment is due.

However, I've begun having second thoughts about my scheduled trip (various reasons...no one specific thing) and have been pondering cancelling it.

I made my deposit partly with a Disney gift card and partly with my debit card. I also made an additional payment using the debit card. I have since completely changed banks - not just a change of debit card (I know how closed cards due to fraud/suspected fraud work - they will accept refunds but nothing can come out using it) but a total change of account and bank. I know if I cancel the gift card part would go back on the gift card. What I don't know is what happens to the other money from the closed account.

IF I were to cancel, how would the refund to the closed card/account be handled? Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Would it be in the form of a check? Or do I just lose it as they have nowhere electronically to send it?

I really doubt you'd lose it ... Might simply be refunded as a gift card or credit.

A phone call to the mouse might be in order ....

When the spring discounts came out in January, I called to upgrade our room. While on the phone with the CM, I decided at the last minute to add tickets. By doing so, I was changing our room-only reservation to a package. The CM told me that she would have to cancel my room-only reservation, issue a refund for the deposit I had paid, create a new reservation for the package, and I would have to pay a new deposit for the package reservation. She then asked for the credit card I used to pay the room-only deposit. However, my bank had since replaced that card with a new "chip" card. The new card even had a new account number. I asked if she could refund the deposit to that card, and she told me no, that it had to go back to the original card. Then she told me the answer to your question: "Disney will have to send you a check." I told her to forget it. I kept my room-only reservation and ordered my tickets from UT. Something about that made me nervous, and I didn't want to wait for a check. But if what she told me is correct, yes, it looks like that is your only option.

Thanks. I don't mind a check, just curious as to if they attempt to put it back on the card first or not. I'll try calling or maybe just chatting (so they don't cancel it before I'm sure if I will or not) later.

As to the card...it's my understanding that the old number should still be linked to your account and the bank would credit the amount back to the current card. At least that's how it works with checking accounts and check cards that are replaced for varying reasons. When I had a situation where the check card was replaced with a new one, the agent at my then bank correctly informed me that money could still go IN to the account from the old card number, it just couldn't come OUT of the account from the old number. I guess they figure someone committing fraud isn't going to be GIVING you money. Haha!

Most of the time they'll refund the closed account and the old bank will issue you a check. If it's the same bank they should just put it back into your account.

Oops, sorry OP. You didn't ask about GC refunds... I'm going to go get some more :drinking1before I do anymore DisBoarding this morning!

I asked about that, and the CM said it wouldn't work. But CMs are incorrect quite a bit. It all sounded like trouble if anything went wrong, so I decided not to even go there.

I got the information from my bank when I panicked after I'd cancelled a reservation for something else with a deposit made with a card cancelled due to fraud. I called them to find out what would happen and the BANK said that the card number was still linked to the account for purposes of refunds if necessary. The girl at Expedia had no clue, so I figured it was more of a bank question anyway.

Haha! I know that feeling! :) I definitely know gift card refunds go back onto the gift card - the main reason why I just get one and reload it rather than dealing with a zillion little ones.
