Deluxe-Off: Wilderness Lodge vs Grand Floridian

I dunno, I know GF is the flagship resort and all, but I just can't get excited about it. I considered it for next year and my DH said that it looks like a "glorified nursing home" and my DD's think it smells...

I think the lobby and grounds of the GF are absolutely stunning and don't remind me of any nursing home I've ever been in.

But the room decor is just too grandmotherly for my tastes (they need to redo the rooms with a fresher, more youthful look that is still consistent with the theme and includes replacing the bedspreads with duvets).

I'm considering the GF for an upcoming stay due to the possible Poly construction but can't seem to make myself want to pay all that $$$ to stay in one of those grandmotherly rooms.

I agree about the rooms, um kinda ew. Hope the get a face lift soon.

I would choose WL as GF is just not my taste. Also, I think GF is huge compared to WL (my thoughts after visiting for dinner). Everything is spread out. I like the smaller size of the lodge. Also, WL offers boat transportation to MK in addition to the buses. I know it isn't the monorail, but found it to be a nice option.

Are the out buildings for the Poly closer than the out buildings of the GF?

We've stayed at both the Poly and GF and I don't think either one is too spread out. I don't think it takes long to walk anywhere at either resort, but that's just my opinion ;).

I agree....I think the GF is beautiful and in no way resembles a nursing home. I don't know when this is slated to happen, but I read awhile back that the GF was next in line for room refurbs. I'm guessing maybe after the Poly room refurbs are done and the VGF get under way with bookings (but that's just my guess ;)).

As a Poly lover who's stayed at both-- GF all the way. I like the resort much better and the monorail puts it over the top.

I hope when I'm 90 I live in a nursing home that looks like GF. Obviously some people have never visited a nursing home.

The room decor at the GF was a deal breaker for me this year but by next year it will have been overhauled.

The WL has a more secluded feeling and stronger theming than the GF but noticeably smaller rooms. If I was staying two weeks....I'd probably opt for the GF. Well, no, I'd probably do a split between an Epcot resort and the GF but you've already ruled out a split.

Either way, there is no wrong choice.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

From what many of you have said the grounds are great but rooms are lacking for the price.

My concern is that the rooms are a bit ............flowery. As a guy that doesn't entirely float my boat but if they're being refurbished then that may be something that sways me.

Is there any info on when this may happen??

I have not seen any official information about the refurb, but some posters have commented that they tried to book the main building (RPC) for July next year and there is nothing available for most of the month. I don't know if this is an indication of the refurb or if there's another reason there wouldn't be any rooms available for that time. You might want to keep an eye on the GF FAQ thread as there has been some discussion about no availability next summer and there are some Disers there now (or going soon) that are going to see if they can get some information as to what's going on.

Having stayed at both I prefer the GF, the resort is beautiful the pools are very nice and the grounds are beautiful as well. That being said it all depends on your taste. They are two completely different themes so pick the theme that appeals to you. Either way whatever you pick you can't go wrong!
