I just returned from a Christmas week trip with the deluxe dining plan. I had two rooms with a total of five people...3 in one room...2 in the other.
The reason I did the deluxe dining was that I had free dining and just upgraded and I also wanted ADR's for lunch and dinner vs. QS.
We ate at four restaurants that required two credits each. We had many credits left over along with many snack credits.
All in all if I took the time to do the math, I know I came out ahead but only because of the free dining upgrade.
Here are some things I noticed (I am just reporting what I noticed or experienced first hand):
1. In the beginning of the trip we were diligent about having two checks. One for three and one for two. By the end of the trip (10 days), we could have cared less and the CM's were the same. Whoever was closest to the waiter scanned their magic band and a total of five credits came off. I really enjoyed having half the amount of paper to deal with at the end of the meal. Which brings me to...
2. At all of our ADR's, we got a bill...signed it. Then we got another bill with the credits and only the amount we might have spent...we signed that and added the tip. It's all ok...it just meant waiting for the CM to come back and forth three times.
3. One time I did overhear a CM tell a table that only four of the five were listed on the Magic band. The group said they had extra credits. CM left and came back after talking to Manager and they were allowed to use 5 credits. This was at TREX.
4. Deluxe dining is a great thing...but remember to project for your tips. With five people ordering five apps and desserts along with entrees "because they could" we spend about $80-$100 per day on tips. Bills was usually 200 - 220 and we tipped $40-50...just our preferences....insert your own.
5. During this busy week it was VERY helpful to have an ADR twice a day. We needed the break for lunch after RD. Our strategy this trip was basically RD, lunch, FP+, Dinner...then open for whatever. Many times whatever was my WL bed! We plan on going back next year and I may do the same....but we plan on breaking in the middle of the day after Rope Drop to the hotel....so I may just use the regular dining plan and us QS at the resort for lunch...I have yet to decide.
6. It is VERY tempting to put one room on deluxe dining and the other room on nothing based on what I witnessed and experienced. That's all I'm going to say. Will I do it...probably not....but it's still tempting.
