Delta's prices reach the sky

From Newsday--

Just as the summer travel season gets into full swing, Delta Air Lines yesterday raised some ticket prices a stunning $100, citing spiraling fuel costs that threaten to push the carrier toward bankruptcy.

Three other major carriers - Continental Airlines, United Airlines and USAirways Group - almost immediately matched Delta's fare increase, and analysts expect other airlines to do the same.

Delta, the nation's third-largest airline, raised the cap on fares purchased just before travel to $599 each way, from $499, and first-class tickets to $699, from $599. Affected fares account for about 6 percent of tickets sold, the Atlanta-based airline said.

Delta's fare hikes come six months after it initiated a program it called "SimpliFares," which brought some of the steepest cuts in the industry in years. The program slashed domestic ticket prices as much as 50 percent and dropped restrictions on Saturday night stays. The no-Saturday night stay requirement remains in effect.

"When Delta launched SimpliFares in January, crude oil was selling at $43 per barrel compared to as much as $61 per barrel in recent weeks," Paul Matsen, Delta's chief marketing officer, said in a statement. "Despite our best intentions to keep the current fare caps in place, we have been forced to find ways to offset this dramatic spike in costs."

Delta has been struggling to remain out of bankruptcy after losing money for the past several years.

Investors sent Delta's stock skyward, to a close of $3.98, a 15-percent jump.

"I was surprised by the $100," said Robert W. Mann Jr., an independent analyst and consultant in Port Washington. "I would have guessed a $20 change. Mann said he was not sure if the hikes could be sustained.

The sharp fare hikes by Delta and the other airlines come as the summer travel season is in full motion. However, analysts said, many summer travelers have purchased tickets far in advance and won't be affected by the higher costs. The impact is most likely to be felt by business executives.

Terry Trippler, an airline expert at the Web site cheapseats .com, said that Delta's new fares still are far lower than they had been in December, when many domestic ticket prices were $800 and $900. The new hikes, Trippler said, are likely to be in place for some time.

A spokesman for Continental in Houston said, "All I can tell you is that we did match Delta's fare and the match was effective today. Whatever Delta did, we did." A United spokeswoman said the Chicago-based carrier matched Delta "in areas where we go head-to-head with them."

Hmm..I just bought great tickets a few days ago on Delta. There were lots of other great prices for different dates throughout the year, including as as soon as next month. I just checked again last night and they are back to regular prices. But I didn't notice any super changes in price.

The tickets on Delta Song that I was watching went up $174 between last night and this morning. :sad2:

The increases may be partly route-based. We haven't been able to get good prices on Delta for about a year and a half, and they're now even higher. We got a good discount price for Oct. on AA. Delta wan't even close. I know Delta is raising prices to stay out of bankruptcy, but I dunno if it'll work. There are too many other cheaper fares out there - not necessarily inexpensive, but cheaper.

The Florida routes are generally very competitive so you may well be right.

I hope that's the case anyway.

I think the article as quoted did not make it clear that the price hike is for people buying tickets only a few days away from when they plan to fly. It is mostly aimed at business travelers. According to our newspaper, they are only raising the price of tickets 'bought at the last minute'. So if you can plan your trip in advance, there should not be a great change in the price

I just checked my Delta flight for the end of July. The price has been going up and down every day (sometimes during the day) for the past month. It's no higher than the highest point 2 weeks ago. Of interest though, our direct flight going and returning is not even half full. It's usually packed, since it's not only the only direct flight for our region but also the latest in the evening returning.

I didn't pull quotes from the article, that's the entire article:

I'm pretty close to convinced that the American judiciary doesn't have the backbone to allow a major airline to go out of business. If they didn't let US Airways fail, then there is no way they're going to allow Delta to fail. Rather, the cancer in the industry is going to have to be handled by mergers and service terminations.

Ayup, 'fraid so. We're going to see the airlines flopping about and moaning in pain for quite a while. The AA tickets I bought in May for October travel have already had times and flight numbers changed twice.

I still have a Braniff ticket I got stuck with when they went out of business. (grrr) I keep it to remind me that airlines DO go under.

I think that the big increase is on the "last minute" booking. SO folks like me who book for business at the last minute will pay more. And to be honest I am not surprised. None of the other majors matched Delta's new fare structure. So in certain instances DLs top fares were lower the the others.

And consequently we, the flying public, must expect to be flopped about and endure some of that pain, for quite a while, as well.

Yes, but as the flying public we are a fortunate group of people. Keep in mind that even as prices climb higher, most of us will still continue to fly. There are so many people out there for whom flying (or vacations for that matter) is not an option at any price.

Very true. It does bear repeating, quite often, that despite all the quandaries that folks discuss on these boards, we're all very lucky to be in a position to travel for leisure, and especially to someplace as wonderful as WDW.

I just booked an Award Travel flight with my Northwest Worldperks to San Francisco, and ironicly, all of the flights are opperated by Delta, and all of those were standard "award levels". IMO, the airlines are idiots for "blatently" raising prices. When people see prices they will :earseek: and drive or take other methods of transportation (amtrak, greyhound, etc..). In the long run, the airlines should keep the airfares AT cost.

Most airlines would have to raise airfares in order to "keep the airfares AT cost."

I beg to differ! If airlines wern't making money in the long run, whats the point of even staying in business?

LOL!!! And I as the stockholder am NOT going to be happy that the airline is not making any money. I suppose using this theory Disney tickets and hotels should also bet AT cost..... :rotfl2: (I believe the Soviet Union once tried something like this!)

Amtrak is in severe FINANCIAL trouble.... and for most of the US that is not even an option. I wouldn't take Greyhound anywhere.

I think Americans are SPOILED. Airfare today is actually MUCH lower in real dollars then it was years ago... Daily I read threads where folks only want to pay $100 for a round trip fare... Well, the truth is that gas has gone WAY up... I drove about 200 miles this weekend and it cost me over $30 in gas and I don't drive an SUV, Minivan, Luxury car etc...

I guess its better then making negative money (aka-loosing)

It isn't a matter of opinion: It's a matter of fact that many majors are losing money year after year. What's the point of continuing to try to return to profitability, given how long they've been unsuccessful? That's a great question.
