Delta Pilots Vote to Strike!

I just wanted to put this out here for those flying from or through Atlanta on Delta. It was in todays paper and it may or may not play out.

" Delta Airlines, Inc. pilots, angered by managements efort to throw out their contract and impose deep pay cuts, voted by a wide margin to authorize a strike, union leaders said Tuesday.

The 94.7% vote in favor of authorizing a strike gives union leaders the authority to set a strike date. They didn't set a date immediately and gave no indication of when they might act.

The results were announced in a memo to pilots from the chairman of the union's executive committee, Lee Moak.

An arbitration panel must decide by April 15 whether to void the pilots' contract. The union said it will strike if the contract is rejected."

I thought this might be relevant if anyone is considering Delta for an upcoming trip.

I should have known! We are flying Delta the first week of May. Pixie dust my way!!! :wizard: I hope this doesn't affect our trip. I really need a vacation!!! (and for any of you out there that think I am being too self centered, I think that if they strike for higher wages across the board for all employees then that is their right and they should exercise it. I just don't want to loose out on our flight and all that $ :) )

we stopped flying Delta last year out of fear they would cease to operate. We now wait until jetblue comes avail and book that.

Keep in mind that JetBlue just had their first quarter in the red.

The pilots didn't vote to definitely strike. They voted to approve a strike if Delta executives don't budge in their pilot pay cut demands (the airline wants the pilots to take a $325 million permanent cut in pay and benefits).

So, how likely is a strike? The answer depends who you talk to. There was a March 1 deadline for the pilots' union and airline officials to reach an agreement over changes to the pilots' current contract, which was missed.

Which led to an independent arbitration panel getting into the loop. They are currently trying to decide whether to grant the airline powers to cancel the pilots existing contract.

If they give the O.K. for that, Delta will be able to make the pay cuts without the union's consent. The pilot's union has said in that case, a strike will be an option.

This strike option probably won't come into play. I think Delta will concede in the end. I do believe the pilots would strike and I think Delta believes it also. If they strike, Delta is finished. The choice is concede or risk a strike and go out of business. I know what I'd choose. Just wanted to get this out there because a strike is now at least a possibility. Pilots took step number one. Ball is in managements court.

With all due respect, following this logic makes the pilots idiots. Management can call them on their threat, and if that results in Delta being "finished," it's a lose-lose for everyone -- booked passengers, management and all employees, including pilots. They in particular would all lose their high paying jobs and know the days were they could just walk into another one at another "legacy" airline are long, long gone. A strike is a direct road for every Delta pilot to end up flying a crop duster. :lmao:
