I would like to book my flight for aug. 2007 but am afraid of Delta being in trouble and gone by then. So many airlines are in troble i was wondering if a strike or labour trouble is any more likely for Delta than usair. AA is twice the price is this because they are more stable?

I don't buy travel insurance, but I do rely on the insurance companies to know what they're doing with respect to their money. So I tend to limit my airline ticket purchases to the companies that the travel insurers are willing to insure. Right now, that list is as follows (for Access America):

  • Airtran Airways
  • Alaska Airlines
  • America West
  • American
  • British Airways
  • Continental
  • Frontier Airlines
  • Jetblue Airways Corporation
  • Midwest Express Airlines
  • MN Airlines d/b/a Sun Country Airlines
  • Nippon Air
  • Qantas Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Southwest
  • US Airways
So, for me, American Airlines and US Airways, yes. Delta Airlines, no.

I tend to just book and take my chances. Actually I think DL is in pretty good shape. They managed to get the pension changes they wanted without the pilots walking out and until the most recent TSA crisis, they were actually making a SMALL profit. (August was a loss, increased baggage handling costs and passengers failing to book due to panic over the "non event".)

However beware that if you buy now for an August 07 flight you will be subject to the potential for NUMEROUS flight changes etc. I think it's too early.

You are so right about flight changes. First our direct flight was cancelled. Only after weeks of calls did they finally tell us they had rebooked our flight. Everytime I check the itinerary it has changed. Today our return flight has a five hour layover instead of just one. Our tickets are nonrefundable (and they were not cheap.) If I had to do it all over again, I certainly would not book Delta.

Unfortunately, by booking so early you could have some major flight time changes. What is offered as a non stop could be a connecting flight by that time. If it were me, Unless it is during a school vacation or peak time I would hold off a little.
