For the first time we are not checking bags. I have a question about the carry-on "personal item". We each will have one rolling regulation sized bag to carry-on and I know you can have also one bag like a purse. Is a laptop sized messenger bag too big to count for this personal item? Dh needs to take work with him (not a computer, though) and this was the best sized bag we found for him. Also, can dd take a child size backpack with stuff to entertain herself for the plane, or would this be considered too big for the 2nd carry-on. Thanks in advance!

As long as your rolling piece fits in the overhead compartment (preferably with wheels facing out or to the back, not to the side) and your personal item fits completely under the seat in front of you, then you're fine.

Go to www.Delta.com . The restrictions are spelled out. Be very careful that your definition of a rolling carry-on is the same as Delta's. If they decide your bag is too big, it could end up costing you far more than it would cost to check a bag.

We made sure to buy the carry on that fit their measurement limits (22x14x9).
Mine is 22x14x7 1/2. DH's duffel bag isn't nearly that big and we've carried it on before. I see that under the personal items they list a diaper bag and dd's backpack is probably that size so she should be okay. And a laptop, so the messenger bag should be okay since it will easily fit under the seat. What amazes me is that you can also have a bag of duty free merchandise, which would make three carry on items!

We've just never worried about it before since Delta only started charging for bags since we flew last year. We were the family that checked 4 bags plus a car seat for years! This is a good lesson in "necessary" vs. "just in case".

I don't think you will have any problem with your stuff. I usually bring a backpack that is stuffed to the gills along with my carry on suitcase. My husband always works on vacation and brings this big, fat (heavy) laptop case with his files and all the chargers for all of us in it along with his suitcase carryon. We usually don't check anything unless we're going to be gone several weeks. We've never been told we'd have to check them.

I would never be able to make the 3-1-1 liquid/gel limit for carryons! How do you handle that? We have to have 4 different kinds of toothpaste, 4 deodorants, shaving cream, suntan lotion, hair products, face/acne products, first aid, etc.

Two words: Owner's Locker!

We've gotten to be pros at finding the travel sizes or filling travel sizes bottless with gels, lotions. I buy the biggest toothpaste (3 oz) and for 5 of us I get 2. Deoderant doesn't need to be separated unless it's liquid so I get the solid ones. Each person is allowed one quart sized ziploc and I've found I can cram alot into each one. I usually put everyone's ziplocs into one grocery bag and put it all into one tray at the xray machine. Once you get through security they can be put into your carryon bags. We don't bring alot of hair products to Florida anyway because of the humidity. My husband believes in the motto 'you can buy whatever you need once you get there'. I don't believe this and manage to get it all into carryon's.

It's all about making choices.....if you have to have all that stuff, then going with carryon only isn't going to work for you. Each person on the flight reservation gets a 3-1-1 baggie. That should hold each person's personal needs as long as they aren't excessive. My friend could never, ever go with just what fits in that 3-1-1 baggie. She is the queen of toiletries!! She has more 'product' than any 3 people combined.
So, for you, you may just have to have checked baggage. Or ship those things down ahead of time.
