I'd say rent the car if you can swing it. By having your own car, you've solved a good amount of your questions.
My brother rented a car for only one day to travel to Kennedy Space Center. He picked it up right outside of MK, so maybe you can just rent for a day or two to get you thru your transitions without worrying. Just not allowed to worry at WDW!!!!! LOL!
