I agree with having a gate check bag. I had the stroller in one this time, and I'm so glad I did. There was a rip in the bag that no doubt would have been my stroller fabric had it not been covered!I've flown with both my kids since they were young. I never used a car seat on the plane. Before age 2, I didn't want to buy them a seat when I knew they'd end up in my lap most of the time anyway. We did gate check a seat, and I would definitely recommend getting a gate check bag, even if it's just the inexpensive red drawstring bag.
FWIW to the OP, we also never fly with a car seat unless we need one upon arrival. Everyone has their own, often very strong opinion about it. I feel just fine with a lap child. I also feel just fine with only the plane's seat belt (without the addition of the CARES harness). Aside from personal beliefs, I think a child's temperament factors in, as well as a parent's willingness to have a child on their lap. Our 6yo was always great - lap, car seat, plane seat. Our 10mo is MUCH more fidgety, but he was fine on our laps this time. I don't know how he will be in a few more months though. Next time we fly, we may opt to get him a seat if we think he would be too hard to contain.
