I am fairly decorating challenged. We just bought a house and I am slowly re-doing all the rooms. Right now I want to get working on the kitchen. The counters are Corian with what appears to be grey, brown and mauve speckles in it.

The floor and backsplash tiles are white with mauve accents. Try as I might, I can't do anything about the mauve tiles right now, even though I am dying to. I can't afford to replace them or the rest of the tile yet and I am in no condition to be individually repainting them!!

The walls are currently a light pink with a country border, which I have already taken down. I need a paint color that will downplay the mauve tiles and give me something to work with as far as decorating!!

I am open to any and all suggestions ....

Here are a few pics of the kitchen while we were looking at the house ... basically looks the same minus the border and the cafe table. I have a bookcase under that mirror that holds my cookbooks and matches the cabinets.

I have an OT question, lol. I'm about to get my kitchen redone and have been debating a Corian counter with the sink like you have. I have read a lot of negative feelings about it with talk of the counter scratching, sink cracking, etc. What are you feelings on the counter and sink? By the way, I think the kitchen looks really nice! Do you just not like mauve?

Get a few Terra Cotta type paint swatches.
Maybe going to a more redder pink???

The other option is to go with a green color-because green goes with anything
:thumbsup2

Susan - I personally do not like the mauve. It is nice looking but waaaayyy to country for me. I prefer more neutral colors. As for the Corian, I really like it. We have only been here for 6 weeks or so. I do notice there is scratching on the counter tops from before. The sink seems to hold up well, though it's a creamy white color and I have noticed stains that I am having a hard time getting out. I don't know that any other counter top would be better regarding the scratching though if people choose to cut directly on it instead of a cutting board.

I am leaning towards a gray with green/sage tint to it. I just painted our living room a deep greenish gray called Promande from Behr, which looks nothing like the color it appears to be on the computer or the swatch card! It looks more like a pea green actually on the wall ... like split pea soup!! I was thinking a lighter shade of the similar hue for the kitchen, maybe with more grey. What the Promande color actually looks like on my screen.

I hate my built in Corian sink...I recommend Soft Scrub with bleach to get it clean. Nothing else works and it gets stained/nasty very quickly.

I think a sage or grey would go well. I was thinking a brown with a pink undertone.

I love sage! I think that would look nice too. I have to agree on mauve, I used to be very into the country mauve/blue. My whole house was in those 2colors, now I just can't even look at mauve, lol. Maybe just get a lot of colored accents until you can redo. Canisters, pasta jars, dishtowels, etc. to draw away from the mauve.

I am opting for that new laminate countertop. It's the bright colored ones with the texturing. I actually thought it was stone until I felt it. I always use a cutting board. I really liked the corian but just read too many horror stories, so I'm glad to actually hear about it personally. Good luck with your kitchen!!

I'd go with a greyish taupe, but not too dark.

I like the idea of grey/taupe too. Some paint stores have those big books of paint strips and will allow you to bring them home. If not, grab a huge bunch from several stores and just tape them around the room. Be sure to observe them in daylight and at night because it will look very different.

I would also avoid any pink, mauve tinted accessories. Perhaps stick with black, greens and such. I also like the counter tops and the white trim is very nice too.

I hate picking paint colors. It just seems I always get it wrong.
