I’m considering taking the option to receive a gift card over housekeeping but I’ve seen mixed opinions. Is it a hassle to get new towels or get rid of old ones? How about trash?

TIA!

remember that if you decline housekeeping you will have the security check each day which can be a problem if you have anyone napping as they seem to knock even with the room op sign. there is no do not disturb sign anymore

Oh yeah we experienced that at AKL year before last... Irritating lol

I don’t find it a hassle at all. Housekeeping is very accommodating when you call them for towels or any other toiletries you might need. I bring my towels to a maid cart if I need to get rid of them. I usually dump my trash in an outdoor garbage near my room once a day.

My friend and I have weird nasal issues, I know it's weird. Either way, we go through a lot of kleenex, and therefore need our garbage emptied and kleenex replenished. We also tend to go for about a week at a time, so I'd worry about toilet paper too. Lol.

We did it once a while ago just because we thought it might be easy, but it wasn't as simple as we thought it would be.

IMO, it depends on how long your trip is. I think its easier to get away with if you're on a shorter trip. It sounds weird, but I have a lot of hair and lose a lot of hair when I style it. On our last trip, the room needed a good sweep and/or vacuum by day 3-4. I couldn't walk across the floor without collecting a tumbleweed of my own hair on the bottom of my socks. We also had breakfast in the room each day and there were a few crumbs around on the floor that would have been nice to have vacuumed or swept (we picked up what we could). I'd imagine this could be a bigger issue for a family with kids or those who eat more in their room. I'm not sure whether they'd do a vacuum upon request if you've declined housekeeping.

I agree with PP though that I could definitely see this program being discontinued, depending on the housekeeping changes they roll out after all this. They'll need a housekeeping overhaul - more housekeepers with fewer rooms assigned doing more thorough cleanings. And in an effort to keep rooms as clean as possible, I can see them wanting to get housekeepers in the room each day. It also makes it easier when housekeepers have to turn rooms over after check out.

A few years ago on one of trips we didn't decline housekeeping, but found ourselves always back in our room resting/napping when housekeeping came so we just got new towels and emptied our trash daily. I think we only actually had our room cleaned once during that trip and didn't mind it. Ever since then, if they ask us if we'd like to decline housekeeping we always do.

We were offered this when my DD and I traveled in 2017. No issues and was great to have the extra money to spend!

We’re a family of four who stay for two weeks in our room without housekeeping. And I agree, I cant stand the floor accumulation of crumbs, grit, hair, etc.... after a day or two. Since the rooms we stay in now are no longer carpeted, we bring a Swiffer. It’s actually a smaller, more compact version of a Swiffer, a Swiffer knock off actually, but it works great. I prefer it to the maids, cause I can just clean up a mess immediately without having to wait for someone to service the room. If it wasn’t for my Swiffer, I would probably opt to receive housekeeping on a longer trip.

Do you drive or does it pack in your suitcase if you're flying? Its definitely a good idea if you're in a room with hard floors, or even for the bathroom where my hair accumulates. But we fly and stay for 7+ days, so it may not be practical both size and weight wise for our luggage. We have a hard time conserving space for souvenirs on the way home as it is! lol!

We declined last summer. Was fine. I called 3 times while there for more towels and lotion. And they always brought it while we were at parks

We sometimes drive, sometimes fly. We bring it either way. It’s pretty light and compact. But again, it’s not a full on Swiffer. I can’t even remember where we bought it. Maybe the dollar store.

Depends on if you like leaving your trash in the hallway, chasing down your own towels, and still having to deal with a security check. Just let them run a vacuum through and wipe down your toilet :D
Gross. I really wish people who forgo housekeeping wouldn’t do this. Thankfully, from what I’ve noticed anyways, most do not.

We always do it when asked. Easy for us. We don't accumulate much trash because we never eat in our room. Since the inception of the magic bands, we don't bring jewelry or much cash when we do Disney so we don't worry about room checks when we are at the park or when we can answer the door. Actually like the safety factor all around.

We were doing it before you got the incentive to do so. I just find it silly to have new towels everyday, I don't change my towels at home every day. I don't change my sheets at home every day (although now that I'm semi-retired I do make my bed every day). We don't really generate an entire trash can for a whole week so that's not an issue. If we happen to bring something back to the room to eat, we just throw the remains in a big trash can somewhere outside the room because I can't stand the smell even for the night. I hang our towels after we use them and sort of keep things neat anyway so it's no big deal. If you stay at Swan/Dolphin they will bring towels and water in a bag and hang them on your door every 2 or 3 days.

When we first checked in at CBR we chose to have housekeeping. The problem was that they did not come to clean the room until the middle of the afternoon, which was always the time we went back to the room to cool off and take a break. So after the first 3:days of our rooms not getting cleaned cuz we were in there, we went to front desk and forgoed housekeeping the rest of the week. It was not an inconvenience at all and was always able to get what we needed

Bring some old wash clothes or buy really cheap ones to wet and use your feet to quickly swif around the room. Maybe the small disposable packages of Windex ... one for each foot or each shoe since we want bottom of shoes corona proofed after day in park. Kinda solves both problems.
Funny we used to just worry about bedbugs ...well not really funny
