Can anyone help me with the following:

Want to take tea bags and coffee (both of which will be sealed in original packets/jars). Also taking medication containing codeine and have a letter from GP stating this is prescription medication.

My questions are:-

Are there forms where I have to declare these?

If so where do I get the forms?

Do we have to join any different queues or go through different doors etc?

Sorry to sound thick but am worrying about doing the wrong thing and getting stopped for it. Can anyone put my mind at rest?

Thanks

ali

You will be fine and don't have to declare any of it - we were asked if we had any food, just said tea bags, chocolate and crisps.
You get a customs form on the plane asking if you have certain plants/seeds etc. You can see a copy of it and the visa waiver forms on the dibb website
I always take co codamol in my hand luggage and have never been asked anything about medication, I think you only need to say / have a prescription for needles/insulin etc.

i carry tons of medicine with me that can't even be purchased in the US (which is why i carry tons of it with me - in case i end up staying much longer than expected)..

i have never ever ever ever had anyone ask me about medicine....
if they open up my carry on bag which is filled to the brim with the stuff, all they need to know is that it's for personal use....which it is...

I have a memory that coffee is one of the things there is a problem taking into the US. Hopefully someone will confirm one way or the other. I would love to take it in as Taylors coffee is much better than most you get in the US!

For coffee it is roasted beans only according to this information on the US Embassy website.

Thanks everyone for your replies however am totally confused.

I always thought that any product containing codeine was not allowed in our luggage without a GP letter confirming prescription. Can anyone else shed any light on this.

Will probably give the coffee a miss but good old tea bags are a must :)

I take codeine (co-codamol) as one of my meds and had no problems, but do make sure if has the pharmacy label on it.

so would you say roasted beans that have been ground are prohibited? I'm confused having looked at the site! Is it just raw uncooked beans they want to avoid? I don't want to take a grinder with me....

I've only ever had my medication checked at Manchester airport going out to the US. All they checked was my name on the packaging and dosage.Once they had looked at that, they just waved me through no problems. This included codiene, so you should have no problems.

Not sure but cannot see why coffee such as the instant Nescafe or ground beans would be banned!

I agree.
I think the distinction is between roasted beans (and anything made from them) as opposed to unroasted "raw" beans which are more akin to an agricultural product.
