I have visited WDW a few times with my family of 5, we have always stayed in a house, with a pool as that works best for our family. (except one time we stayed overnight at the Polynesian)

This time it is myself and a friend celebrating our big birthdays. We are looking at early December and just wondering what people recommend for a bit of luxury, best value, good location. We haven’t written off on-site but the perks (unless they get better) don’t seem to warrant the high costs. We need two double beds at least, not massively fussed on pool given time of year and probably won’t eat breakfast until we get to the parks.

We will rent a car, but somewhere in walking distance to some amenities would be great for the odd time we fancy a drink.

The plan currently is Disney one week then we will move to a Universal hotel for week 2.

Take a look at the various Bonnet Creek properties. There are a range of different hotels there: Wyndham, Hilton, Waldorf-Astoria, and JW Marriott. Great location. You could even do a timeshare rental at that side of the Wyndham complex; a 2BR would allow the two of you to avoid having to share a bedroom or bathroom, though you'd have to fight over who gets the king bed.

If you really want to splurge, the Four Seasons would be great.
