December UY, full 2017 points available, question about Dec. 2018

We just signed up and have points for use in 2017 UY (Dec.). I am looking at potentially booking for Dec. 2018 (which would be 2018 UY points, unless I bank the 2017 points, if I'm not mistaken).

Question, if I hold off on banking just in case we decide sometime between now and the end of July prior to end of Nov. 2018 (when unbanked 2017 UY points would expire), can I use the 2018 points to "hold" a potential Dec. 2018 trip....but then if we don't use the 2017 points, bank them and then use them for that stay in December?

Sorry if it's confusing. If I need to clarify more, I will.

Basically, I'm not ready to commit to banking our Dec. 2017 UY points already...and am looking at a trip in Dec. 2018...with the possibility of using some 2017 points during our 2017 UY, but no plans in stone yet.

Yes. If you did end up banking the 2017 points you could call MS and have them reallocate those to the existing reservation and it would free up the 2018 points for you to bank into your 2019 UY or use on a different reservation.

Thanks! Looking at things, I'm actually fairly encouraged by some of the availability I'm seeing. Some of the single dates that are already booked are little perplexing, so I look forward to learning more about the ins and outs of all this.
