Debt Dumpers 2024

That's just unfortunate :( The best thing to do probably would have been to pay down the card but keep it open. Of course, that doesn't work if you can't keep from using the card. It's really disappointing to work hard to do better just to have something out of your control derail things.

I saw a lot of that too. Then there were people like me who hardly saw any difference in the normal day to day spending. I'd already cut my spending down to the minimum.
The problem with the card was that it was some ridonculous interest rate plus a crazy amount of fees, not just interest and not normal type of AF.
It’s the type of card marketed to people with bad credit.
The guy is getting whacked with fees from banks & credit card companies. We just were try to stop the hemorrhage.

He said it was a $200 fee for like a $700 credit limit with something like 35% interest rate. They took a down payment on the annual fee then charged the rest as a monthly fee. He was only able to pay the monthly minimum. So with the down payment, the monthly charge & the interest rate, he would have been right back in the same spot as soon as the annual fee hit again.

I believe the credit card company in question is Credit One Bank. They’re not the actual worst but they’re pretty bad. I still have 2 accounts with them. I got them when I couldn’t get approved for a decent card because of my credit history. I still have small balances on each one. They’re on the list to be paid off after my Q Card. Still working on that one. But I did just finish paying off an old debt on Friday so that’s $150 back to me every month. One more old debt to go and that will be paid off in April 2025. Getting there!!!

Adding an Orlando trip with the homeschool group to next year's sinking funds. Since our trip this year got nixed, we've decided to go with the homeschool group next year and make it a joint 40th birthday for me and 10th birthday for the oldest.

We've never done it before but I think we are going to look into renting DVC for the trip, so I'm going to look into that and weigh our options.

We have rented many times. It’s like paying for a moderate and getting deluxe. 1BR and larger have full kitchens with washer/dryer.
The only negative (besides the obvious risk of getting screwed over, foreclosure, etc) is that it’s generally non-refundable so we always get trip insurance.
A less obvious perk is that the rental price is the final price. When you book through Disney, 12.5% sales tax is added which is huge.

This doesn’t apply to you but for others with older kids, there is no extra charge with DVC when your kid turns 18 and becomes the 3rd (or 4th) adult, which Disney does charge when booking directly with Disney.

Some of the disboards owners we have rented from live in the UK and Costa Rica, still all went smooth.

Some renters prefer to book through a broker such as David’s but it costs more than renting directly through an owner.

ETA: Weird. I didn’t add that link for insurance but that is the company we use.

I definitely get scared over the idea of something happening to the reservation. It's a lot of money. It's high on our list, but I'm also keeping my eyes open for a solid suite in the Disney Springs area that also has the kitchen, because some of those may end up being a better price.

Do you happen to know, if we're buying our tickets thru our travel host, and we book DVC, can we still do the dining plan? When I tried to "book" rack room it said it required a package. I don't remember needing that before.

What do you mean, buying tickets through a travel host? I've never done that. We buy our tickets through Undercover Tourist.
Because most DVC owners have APs and don't book packages, they can book the dining plan anytime. Just let the owner know you would like to buy one.
Yes, it is a lot of money though to be honest, we have only rented stays of 1-3 nights, pre-cruise. Well, we also added a 2 night rental onto a regular Beach Club stay. So, I have never booked a week or something like that where it's several thousand dollars. I think the most we spent was $1200.
I was so nervous the first time, I had the poor guy on the phone for like an hour. He was a math teacher from upstate NY. He also gave me a math tip on creating passwords that will never repeat themselves.
Of course, Disney-loving people are so easy to talk to. One night I called when he was out tutoring for upcoming tests, I talked to his wife for quite a while too. :goodvibes

Some owners use a contract, some don't. After a few times, I felt a lot more secure, maybe too secure, where I rented just after texting the guy from San Diego.
These were all people posting on the rental section of the disboards or a similar site call ***********.com which is geared to DVC owners. (It no longer has a rental board.) Most have a high post count. Some let me pay a deposit initially and gave a schedule of when payments were due; some wanted 100% payment at the time of booking.
ALL of them gave me the confirmation # and allowed me to add it to my Disney account so I could see all the details and make sure it's all correct before I paid them. So it doesn't mean a DVC owner will not screw anyone over, but at least I could see that this person was capable of booking a DVC reservation with access to points and not some nut job impersonating an owner.

When I told a coworker who was taking her grandchildren to WDW, she used David's and still felt like it was a huge savings vs. booking directly. She was happy to have a 2 BR unit so her daughter/son-in-law, and the kids could share the space with her instead of being in separate hotel rooms that may not even be on the same floor. Not that I like to do laundry or cook on vacation, it's nice to have the facilities if needed. We really like a full size fridge and freezer, even if we only eat breakfast in the room. Dh likes a big greasy breakfast like sausage, egg and cheese on an English muffin or bagel. Good thing he likes to cook. If you have a W/D that you don't have to share with strangers, it's easy to throw in a load every now and then so you don't have to pack a lot.

There are probably other brokers besides David's, but he used to be a sponsor of the Disboards before covid. Also he's based in Canada so check if your cc charges a foreign transaction fee if you use him. That could be a substantial amount.

I highly recommend it; just find a way to do it safely. :goodvibes:flower3:

If you rent DVC points, it will be for the room only, you can still get the dining plan.
I have rented my DVC points to friends before and was able to add the dining plan for them.
Park tickets - you would be on your own to get them wherever you choose.
If you choose to rent DVC and do not go through a broker, make sure there is a contract and read it carefully. I am sure most experiences are hassle-free (or close to hassle-free). But there are some stories out there of people getting scammed.

Not a good 9 days for us. I've been to the doc (urgent care and my personal provider) 3 times over that span with ear issues. First, I went to the urgent care Saturday a week ago because they were plugged up. I have irregular wax issues, and I had been using cue tips regularly. I went up there because my ear had been hurting and stopped up for a few days. So they did an ear irrigation in both ears. One went well, the other hurt really badly. So she finally stopped. She said if it wasn't better by Monday to go see my PCP. So I did that last Monday.

He said the urgent care really damaged one ear, but he did an irrigation on the other. It got cleaned out well. But he said the other was too bad to do an ear irrigation. So he gave me a prescription for antibiotic ear drops and told me to come back today. I went back today, and he ruled it a fungus instead of a bacterial infection since the other drops weren't working. Turns out a recent study done (according to webMD) showed that every person that had been using those drops the urgent care prescribed me had developed a fungal infection.

So my PCP doc put me on 2 new prescriptions, a fungal pill and a fungal ear drop. I started the pills tonight, and I have to take 1 a day for 14 days. I have to do 3 drops in my ear 4 times daily for 10 days to try and remove the fungus out of there. He said he wasn't sure what was causing it. Along with the irregular wax buildup and using cue tips every day, I switched from over the ear headphones to ear buds back in late spring. He said that probably contributed to it too because my ears weren't getting dry after showering in the morning before putting those ear buds in for work. So kind of a imperfect (perfect) storm, I guess you can say. Anyway, I'm now on antifungal drops and antifungal pills for the next week to week and a half.

I used to use Qtips every day, knowing they say it's not really good for your ears, until our first born was at our pediatrician for a check up. He examined our son's ears, looked straight at me, and sternly said, "Stop using Qtips in his ears!"

He didn't ask IF I did. He could tell just by looking. :guilty:
Ever since then, I started using a tissue over my pinky to dry them out, for him and myself. I don't miss the Qtips at all anymore.

DH had some issues with one ear earlier in the year, went deaf in it almost overnight. After way too many visits to various care providers, including 3 or 4 to various units at our local hospital, and countless drops the inflammation subsided enough for the doctor to be able to find the route cause. There was a silicon bit from the end of some in ear headphones that had fallen off and got wedged. Because he only used a headset when he worked in a client office, and hadn't been there for ages, he hadn't had cause to look at them since so hadn't spotted the missing bit. All remaining pairs were thrown away and external headphones purchased.

He felt very foolish - and was very apologetic to all the medical staff whose time he had wasted.

Thankfully, being in the UK, the only cost was to his pride - and the equivalent of about $50 for prescriptions.

I am so sorry. I hope you start to feel better soon. I had DD in the ER (we were told by the nurse line with our insurance to go) for an extremely bad ear pain and noise was muffled out of that ear about 2 weeks ago. They had to irrigate her ears as well before they could tell that it was a bad ear infection.

ear pain sufferers (and the partners/parents of)-i highly suggest an item to keep on the shelf-EarPain MD 4% lidocaine drops (OTC-about $22 for a small bottle at Walgreens). when ears hurt but are not to the point where an MD prescribes meds or they have not started working yet OR you can't get into see the MD-these give just enough relief to ease the pain. you still need to find out the cause of the pain but these can help get you through a painful night or weekend.

Thanks. But there's no pain whatsoever. They're just stopped up. There was pain early on the first night, but it's subsided. Now they're just clogged up with a fungal infection. I've been taken a pill the last 2 days as well as ear drops 4 times per day. I'm tempted to try some alcohol or peroxide in my ear, but I'm not sure my PCP would approve (and he left out of town today until the end of the month).

You could take a decongestant, such as real Sudafed. Not to be confused with the fake crap that they put out on the shelves. For the real stuff, you have to ask a pharmacist and show a driver's license. We can all thank the meth heads for that extra hassle.

Yea, I thought about that. Might also try my Zertek (sp) or my Great Value version.

If you have allergies, Flonase and Pataday helps everything drain better too. My allergies are bad so I take both of these plus Allegra and Singulair (Rx) and it keeps things under control. When I was younger, I'd slack off sometimes and end up with a sinus infection. After sooo many of those I eventually went to an ENT doctor, had sinus surgery, repeated allergy testing with an allergy doc which added a few more things to my list, and finally things are as good as they're going to be without getting weekly allergy shots.
