Debt Dumpers - 2016

I haven't been on the boards lately either. I ended up getting a new car today (well used but new for me). It is a Malibu with only 14k miles. I took my car into a shop two weeks ago because the air wasn't working and they basically blew up the whole electrical panel so the car will start and drive but nothing electrical works. And the guy expects me to pay for the job as well as buy a new computer for it. I haven't paid and my car is still there. So with all that drama I ended up going car shopping today and got a car. Absolutely hate having a car payment but I guess it was time. I am so not happy with what happened to my car though.

We have had our Malibu since January and LOOOOOOOOVE it. I hope yours makes you just as happy!!! :)

P.S. Sorry about the cruddy situation that led you to get a new one though :(

Hey all! This is my first day back on this board since....ummm, not really sure. I could blame the crazy summer busy life, but truth is, I've been avoiding it. As is usually the case, we started out the year so strong, but...well, you know how it goes :(

Hubs and I have made a commitment to each other to get things back on track to finish up the last half of the year. So, here I am again.

As of the 1st of this month our debt total is at $95,257.57. This includes 8 credit cards, 7 student loans, 7 medical bills, 4 uncategorized items, 2 car loans, 2 collections, 1 furniture loan, 1 home appliance loan, 1 private school loan and 1 DVC loan. We are sort of using debt snowball, but not in its traditional fashion. Right now we can't really go from lowest interest or lowest balance to highest due to no interest expiration dates and such. However, we are carrying over minimum payments once an item gets paid off.

Best of luck to everyone finishing out the month!

Glad that you are back! The plan we made at the beginning of the year didn't happen quite as we planned either. It will take us longer than we had hoped, but we are back on track again with a new plan and have been making great progress.

Those are a lot of individual bills. Have you thought about consolidation to help reduce interest or simplify payments?

Yes, it's definitely a lot. Too many!!

The student loans are actually somewhat consolidated. 5 (which are my husbands) are all under one provider and is one lump payment each month. But they are listed as 5 individual loans and it shows us how much of the payment goes to each loan. The same with the remaining two (which are mine) under a separate provider. I list them as 7 instead of 2 for a couple of reasons. One it keeps me more motivated to be aggressive in payments. Even though the balance is the same either way if I view it as 2 loans it doesn't seem as bad to me. Strange, I'm sure. Also, when the time comes to snowball into student loans I do have the ability to make extra payments on an individual portion of the loan instead of the entire sum which again will keep me more motivated since an extra payment will eliminate a $2,000 portion balance quicker than an extra payment to the whole shebang of $10,000 (just as an example, not real numbers ;) ).

We have looked into consolidating the non-student loans, but the last time we checked it actually wouldn't save us any money since several are on a no interest plan for the time being.

I definitely pray that I will be smart enough to never EVER have so many items of debt in the future though!!

*** Sorry for the long winded reply ;)

Wow, are you leaving the old car there? Congrats on the new car

As of right now yes it is there. He said that it's still drive able - but technically it's not. Yes you can start it and possibly drive but nothing electrical works. So I guess while its 105 degrees here they expect someone can drive a car and not have the windows go down or a/c work. It would never go through inspection either. So he believes I should pay for the work that he has done - plus buy a whole new computer for the car. I refuse and until we come to some kind of agreement he has the vehicle. It has been there for over two weeks now and he has lied through his teeth about it and then had the nerve to lie to my face. I did clean it out and took the tags off on Wednesday and turned them into dmv and stopped the insurance on it. So who knows what will happen with this

I have been watching this thread and slowly have been working on our debt. Just when an end is in sight for the credit card and nearly for the student loan, we get our car insurance first bill following my husband's at fault car accident. This is our first surcharge with the company in 17 years, and w hile I understand the why, I don't understand why it doubled the cost of the insurance! Any suggestions on how to shop for new insurance? Is one better than another? We've had the same insurance for 17 years (me for 25 years). If we have to pay double, it surely is going to impact my plan for paying off the credit card and student loan in the next few months and working on my car payment. I swear, if it isn't one thing, it is another. I get so frustrated trying to do the right thing and get ahead.

Welcome! Ouch that is quite a hit doubling!! Not sure who you use but you can just shop around with all the insurance companies - just call the, like progressive or all states or whomever and they can run numbers for you right on the phone. Of course they will ask if he was in an accident but it still may save you. I have State Farm and have a package bundle with them - homeowners and all which gives a discount

Sweet fancy moses I can't believe some of y'alls property taxes! I pay Just under $2200 for 17 acres and a 1200 square foot house!

I brought home my car! It's even better than I thought. So new and clean. Everything went off without a hitch. My first payment isn't due until September 5th and even if I pay the minimum, the interest over the 5 year period is only $325! That makes me feel much better about taking on this debt.

I was also approved for both Amtrak credit cards which will give me enough points to book a family bedroom roundtrip on the auto train. I normally budget around $1500 for this expense so this is a huge relief. The minimum spend is $1,000 for each card so I will pay our car insurance and other bills to meet the requirements.

Someone else said it, but just call or go online and check rates. I stayed with state farm for 20+ years, then switched to century21 due to rising rates, then 2 years later switched over to progressive for the same reason. I generally get the bill for the next 6 months about a month before it's due, so once I see how much it is I check around if it seems unreasonable.

Soo jealous!!!

Well, I have a 1600 foot 4 bedroom house, with a detached garage/shed on 1 1/2 lots in town and my taxes are about $550 a year. One (and close to only) reason I like living in Arkansas. It's cheap to live here.

Well, i just got back with my car. Left Monday afternoon about 3 pm, stayed overnight in Elizabethtown KY. Drove in on Tuesday and barely made it to the shop before they closed. Turned in the rental (4000 miles in 16 days) and stayed back. Didn't get far, stopped at Washington PA for the night. Drove Wednesday to St. Louis and stayed there, and the rest of the way home today.

Total trip was about $1800 - $500 insurance deductible, $750 for the rental (already filed for the reimbursement) about $250 for gas, and $200 for 3 nights in hotels and $100 in food.

Car drives like new and looks good too. I'm just tired.

Good to hear from you,,,I'm moving to Arkansas with tax rates like that.lol
now rest well
Hugs Mel

Hi Hon
My heart goes out to you. I am thinking (this is in Canada) the shop may be able to hold the car for non payment ,,is it worth while to pay what he wants and then sell the car?
My ex is a mechanic and I can tell you there are so many unscrupulous people in that field.
I hope things turn around for you.

So I can't sleep,
here's what keeping me awake
I don't need a credit card but I applied for one and have to put 500.00 dollars on it in 3 months to get enough airmile points to get a free 2 day pass for Universal studios.... I know others have done this type of transaction to earn points but I guess I'm alittle freaked out. I plan to use it to buy groceries and pay it off each time I use it. I know it's silly but I've never done this before. Thanks for letting me natter on.
Hugs Mel

I was also thinking that was a lot to manage but then read your reply about the student loans etc. hang in there!

I use ice and lemons in our garbage sink disposal as well. I hate that darn thing, but at least it's still working. Scares the bejeez out of me though

I had my 6 month cleaning at the dentist today (only owed $7.40!) but the bad news is that I need another root canal (already had two ten years ago). So I'm going back mid September. Quote for it is $1,067. I think insurance will cover upwards of 80% but the receptionist at the dental office thinks we will be covered 100% :earseek:I'll find out in a couple of weeks when Manulife mails me their quote. That would certainly take the sting out of another root canal. I hate my teeth :headache:

I just looked up the Ninja- super cool!! Do you love it so far? Our Krups duo ( was a wedding gift- large pot on one side, espresso on other) just kicked the bucket- DH bought a regular maker from Costco yesterday, but that Ninja looks super cool!

Oh root canals- I feel your pain- literally :( I have obsessive tooth care and have already had 2 (Or is it 3 :( ) and my DH who barely brushes his teeth has never even had a cavity!! Fingers crossed it will be 100% - I believe ours is, but 80% is common too.

Oh I LOVE the Ninja!! It makes hot and cold drinks, including capuccino's and flat whites and you don't even use espresso in it! We've had it for about 6 weeks now and I've been to Starbucks maybe twice since we've had it (and I would go several times a week!). We bought the one with the stainless steel carafe.

Ha - you sound like me when it comes to teeth. Despite being the most obsessed in our house about teeth care I've still had 2 root canals and this will be my third. Meanwhile, my dh who flosses only once - the night BEFORE his dentist appt - and brushes for maybe 30 seconds at a time, has never had a cavity in his life! Not fair :(

Well. We shall have to see what happens now.

I finally got home after being gone 7 weeks for vacation, work out of town, and 2 tripswich to Pennsylvania. I was greeted witha letter from the city that my yard was in violation of a few city ordinances. Apparently, the riding mower I bought in March quit working in late May, and the roommate didn't bother to tell me.

Took it back to Walmart, and they politely said that I was past the time they can do anything, and I have a $1000 paperweight.

They did keep it and said they would get in touch with a repair shop. I'm not sure if they will cover the cost of the repair or not, I'm guessing not but ...

So, with the heat index at 115 I've been "mowing" my yard little bits at a time with the weedeater. I hope to be finished by Monday, since the city only gave me till Wednesday to get it done.

Wonder if I could start a gofundme page?

Do you have a tractor repair facility nearby? My parents have 2 ride ons and there is a place near them that will come to their house, pick it up, work on it, then deliver it back to them. Much easier than the other place they used to use where my dad would have to borrow dh & his truck, use planks to get the thing in the bed of his pickup, get it out of there and do it all again when the work was completed.

I am so jealous over your tax bill. That is less than one month of ours. Arkansas is likely a beautiful place to live with lots of friendly people but I don't think I could be that far from the ocean. Lakes just don't cut it for me.

Like we always go back to, CoL is all relative to salaries too. So while you're in shock over our tax bills, you're also shocked what our teachers make. The numbers here are just higher for everything but it doesn't mean we're rich. lol
