Deaths at WDW do not make the news but a man died at OKW the other day. He was found in the hot tub at the main pool. I don't know the cause of the death, but must say there are signs near these hot pools that should be followed no matter what condition you think you are in. I do know that sitting in them for long periods of time is a no no. At any rate, hot tubs can be dangerous anywhere, this man happened to die in one at OKW. whether it had anything to do with the hot tub or not I have no idea, but please read the sign near these tubs and follow them. I would think that if you are in good heath and follow the warnings these hot tubs can be a joy to use, just be careful, and I would not use one alone regardless. This is not some story but came from a very reliable source. Death can happen anywhere even at DVC at WDW.

So sad. Thanks for the heads up. Another reason why we have a family rule that you never use a spa or pool alone. If you get into trouble there is no one to get help or offer assistance.

What a sad story. My condolences to the family - whoever they are. :(

That's so sad. We are going to OKW for the first time in Oct. I'm not sure if I will be venturing into the hot tub on our trip!!

How very sad for the family to have this experience while on vacation. How sad for them that they had to lose a family member at all. I couldn't imagine ever returning to OKW let alone the pool area if this was in my family.

Since he was "found" - I wonder if he was in there after pool hours?

That poor family. I just cant imagine how they are coping with that. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

I can actually comment on this one because my father was one of the men who pulled the guy out of the hot tub. I will give the information that was explained to me. It was the hot tub near the main pool. two friends (probably in their 70's) were in the hot tub. My dad went over to the hot tub and decided that it was just too warm to be in it, so he went to lay out on the lounge chair. One of the men got up and went into the pool, leaving the other in the hot tub. I was probably less than 10 -15 min or so and my dad heard some screaming from the hot tub area. The guy from the pool had come back and found the other one floating. So, my dad jumped up and along with 3 other guys pulled him out of the water. There were two nurses in the area who started to do CPR, etc and then the paramedics came, along with CM's. Apparantly he was non responsive to anything. My parents said that it was a very strange moment, but my dad as glad that he could have helped a little.
I do feel bad for the family. But, if I had to go, I would want to go in the best place on Earth. Thats what we were saying is that at least his last memories are of a special place called Disney world!

That is so very sad. It is very hot outside to be sitting in a hot tub, cant even imagine it. A lot of people use them for aches & pains. That is so incrediably sad.

I knew someone whose father had a heart attack after being in a hot tub. There are warnings about how long to stay in one.

Last year we were @ BCV with our kids, they wanted to get in one @ SAB but the water was extremely hot (In my opinion too hot). There must be 2 or 3 @ SAB, we found another @ it was a comfortable temp. We never stay in them long, but I wouldn't get in one that is too hot.

Hot tubs are not warm baths. That is the reason I posted this. It is my hope that people that think they are just warm baths will read the warning signs near them. I see little children going in and out of them all the time at OKW. They are suppose to be hot not warm. Anyone with blood pressure problems shoud be very careful. They are not a place to sit and drink and be merry for too long anyway. With thousands of guests everyday at WDW I am sure there are more deaths then we realize. Prayers to the family of the man that passed.

how sad to happen during a family gathering.

Oh how very sad. Thanks for posting Pa and reminding us of the rules and thanks for filling us in on the details Geebs about this death. Prayers to this man's family and friends.

Thanks for posting this and reminding us to mind the signs. We have a hot tub at home and I only keep it set at 101 in the winter and 100 in the summer. Even still I keep to the 15 minutes because I get dizzy any longer than that (I have low bp). My brother almost died in a hot tub at a hotel because he stayed in it too long and almost passed out (and he was alone and on a business trip). That scared me enough to use great caution. I feel so bad for this man's family - my prayers go out to them.

When I took lifeguard training they told us that having high blood pressure and a hot tub could be a fatal combination. The sad part is that lots of people don't know they have high blood pressure until it is too late.

I have low BP and have never had a problem at a WDW hot tub. IMO they are not as hot as lots of others I have been too. (probably becuase in spite of the warnings there are ALWAYS kids in them!)

This is very very sad, and a real vacation horror story. Very sorry for the family.

Keep in mind that just because this individual expired while in the hot tub doesn't mean that there is any cause/effect link between the two events.

A very sad time for this family. A teacher in our district died in her hot tub at home. She had high blood pressure, either stayed in too long or it was too hot-she had a stroke and died.
