We have a very airtight rental agreement...with the horses owner. But this girl is basically subletting from the owner. There is a very airtight contract between the deadbeat and the horses owner...but the headache it will take to go after her isn't worth it. I just spoke to the horse's owner (not the deadbeat) and we agreed to let this month slide (for the owner...I WILL continue to try collecting from the dead beat) and the owner will recommence paying for her board in February. She will also pay for her horse to have new shoes put on since the deadbeat let the poor thing go too long without being reshod.
I KNOW stuff happens. The horse's owner got laid off (her husband) so that's why they were subletting the horse to begin with. I have often accepted checks late from them with a little communication when things were tight. But the dead beat has a long and storied history of deadbeatism with previous barns, the vet and the farrier. I am just one in a LOoooooooooong line of people trying to collect. The difference is that I actualyl HAVE her check. It just isn't any good. I fully intend to press charges on her for it too.
