I work for the State of Delaware.

Dept. of Transportation has announced major delays through the construction area of the I-95 Toll Plaza near Newark over the Thanksgiving weekend.

They expect it to begin late Tuesday/early Wednesday and go into late Sunday night, with the peak times looking like 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, with Sunday being later into the evening.

Alternate routes are suggested.

Will they put up the large electric signs when traffic gets heavy? I know the alt. routes are well marked as long as people get off early at the exit before the service plaza( southbuound). Northbound they will be better off and useing Rt. 40

I imagine this is on-going construction??
Can't believe they could be stupid enough to begin any construction on what is the MOST traveled weekend of the year.
Or could they??

It is definately on-going, they are just getting people ready for how bad it is really going to be......

Most likely, although I am not sure, since it is a holiday - not a regular working day.

They did issue a graphic with "red" being the hours during the day when it is going to be backed up.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! I had planned on traveling through there on Friday. I'll find another way now.

Did they say it was going to be horrendously backed continuously from 8 AM to 8 PM Tuesday through Sunday?

Using smartraveler dot com for Philadelphia you can see the traffic information for this spot. Use the mouse pointer in the middle of the screen to move the map to view what is to the lower left. (I-95 is in a more east-northeasterly to west-southwesterly direction at that spot.)

We bypass that area totally. We live in Chester County PA. We take 202 south to route 1 south. We take that south into Nottingham PA. We then take I think it's 272 south I need to check the road number...south into Maryland. It's awesome! We take it all the way down to 95 and completely bypass the traffic and toll on 95 in Delaware!!! We skip Delaware all together!! My parents used to live in Oxford Pa and my dad showed me that way. LOVE IT!

supersuperwendy,

Are there lights on those roads? When we visit family in Baltimore, it seems we always hit traffic backups in Delaware and I would really like to avoid 95 if the alternate way doesn't take a long time.

Rt 202 does have some lights it is kind of hit and miss, between Valley Forge and West Chester it is a bypass road, then @ West Chester the lights start, there are around 8-10 lights before you reach Rt 1 then on Rt1 there are some till you get to Kennet Square. from there on till Rt 272 or even to Rt 222 there are no lights.
You can take Rt 1 further south past Conowingo but I do not know what it is like past there. You could aslo use Rt 40 but there are alot of lights on that route plus it is the most used way around 95. Safe travel to all 0on the road for the hoilday week. Slow down and leave enough space around you.:littleangel:

LOL. I've worked in Delaware for the last 17 years and they've had this same project I swear the entire time. :rotfl:

Hi Disney Ella!

Yes there are some traffic lights, but we still find it to be faster and more relaxing then staying on 202 south through Delaware to 95 south. We take 202 south to 926 and make a right. We take that to 82 and make a left and get onto route 1 south. We take route 1 to the Nottingham exit and make a left and go past the wawa toward the Herrs factory. We follow 272 south to 95. We like that way a lot. From our house to go down 202 into Delaware takes sooo long with all the traffic and lights on Concord Pike. Also going our way you avoid the toll on 95! :wizard:

eliza17: So in time several generations of road/construction workers could be working on the same project:)
It's sort of that way on 95 around DC--construction in the same area since I was a teenager---

I used to be an architect, training as a construction manager. I did a stint as a consultant for DelDOT.

I noted a guy working on the project, who had a very distinctive southern accent. I asked him how he got to DE and he said, "Well, I-95 of course." I thought he was being sarcastic and then he explained he had "worked" his way up from the south BUILDING I-95.

I drive for UPS and travel 95 everyday we were told on Mon that at peake time on Wed. they expect the northbound to be backed up from the toll booth to the Susquehanna River in Md. Folks that is around 17 miles folks I hope that is not true. I have not heard how far on the south side but I would think it might get back to the 295 & 495 merge area. Good luck and safe travels to all who are headed out on the highways.

That is what they have been saying on the DE side going south. And it could be literally several hours a day; especially Wednesday and Sunday.

We're coming southbound on Wednesday, and unfortunately we cannot leave early in the day. I estimate we hit the Delaware area around 7pm.

I'd like to work my way around this - any experts in this area who can give me an alternate? Our normal route is I-295 in NJ to the Delaware Memorial Bridge to I-95. I'm willing to alter as needed to get around it...
