DDP at Cap'n Jacks Restaurant

The last time I called, which was about a month ago, the twin lobster tails were included in the dining plan and it uses 1 table service. You get two small to med sized tails, rice and veggie. It looked nice to us and we were thinking of going there but I did not like that we could not make a rsvp and I did not want to wait 90 min to get seated. I worried about that. So I am keeping it as an option, just in case, and I think it looks yummy.
:cloud9:

As of right now it's still on the menu but I must say some friends dined there recently on the dining plan and due to their experience I won't be going there.

Their waiter had a waiter in training and they ordered and the waiter asked if they were on the dining plan and they said Yes. He came the trainee a strange look.

They took the order and left the table, my friend went to use the restroom and passed them, and over heard the waiter say to the trainee, we give the small lobsters to them and save the good ones for the paying guest.

Needless to say their service was not great. I am not sure that all restaurants like the Dining Plan.

Well that's just sad. :sad2:

Hello, this is Paddy the trainer you are writing about.

First, I was not training her that night; I was in the station next to her. She was being trained by another server. She look up at me when the question came up. I answered.
Subsequently, I would have never said something like what you stated.
Why, you ask.

First, the chefs setting up the plate has no idea what tickets are on the Dinning Plan. So they unable to pick and choose what sizes to what ticket.
Second, the tails we get are 6 to 7oz. and come in a box of 20. All the tails are about the same size and quality.
Third, All the guest pay, some pay at the end of their meal either cash, credit or room charge. Others pay the cost of the DDP. If you think you are getting a free meal for staying in a Disney Resort. You need to consider you are paying one price for everything ie: room, tickets and meals. But you still pay. Either you pay all at once with the Package or pay for each piece by piece you still are paying.
Finally, Most likely what I said was that we give the “add a tail” to the guest on the package plan, at no charge. Just for being on the Plan.

As for the service. I am truly sorry that you did not enjoy your evening at my second home. I wish that you would have told me then, I would have done most anything to make it better,
If I remember right, that was a very busy night.
Not that it’s an excuse. But for the size of our restaurant we are the busy on Disney Property. On any night we have 650 to 700 guests from 4:00 to 10:30 pm. In a restaurant that only seats 96 at tables and 15 at the bar.

On your next trip, Please let me know what I can do to makeup for my shortcoming that night.

Respectfully,
Paddy

P.S. Starting next week the “add a tail” is coming off the menu.

What did I miss?? How do you know Sammie was talking about you?:confused3

Hi Paddy Welcome to the DISboard!
Just an FYI..this thread is from a year ago.
I'll be trying CJ's for the first time on 6/23. Maybe we'll meet:)

P.S. Starting next week the “add a tail” is coming off the menu.

Why is this happening?:confused3 Would think it's a great way to build the check/tip?

Not looking for a "freebie" on the DP in addition to entree; just think it's a common option @ seafood houses.

I didn't even know you could "add a tail." I guess I missed out on that! ;)

Heres Why.
You pay about $40 a day for the DDP plan per person. At C.J’s if you order right the bill will total about $60 to $70 a person (adult).

Example, App: Shrimp Cocktail $ 11.99
Entrée: Salmon 22.99
Add a Tail 12.99
Dessert: 5.49
Drink: Bottled Water 3.99
Total 57.45
Gratuity 10.34
Disney's Grand Total 67.79 Per Parson

Plus you still have a snack and a Quick service to eat per day.

But I must say as a server at Disney I love it. But PLEASE don’t tell Disney that.

PaddyDax

PS: Sorry if the Prices are not to the penny, but you get the idea.

Yes, I know that the original post was over a year ago. But, I felt the need to defend my honor. So to Speak. And I just joined yesterday.

I would love to meet folks from this group. I am off on Wednesday’s & Thursday’s (6/23 & 24), maybe another day.

BTW CJ’s is a great place to stop for lunch on the way to or from the airport.

If you or anyone comes to CJ’s please ask for me. :yay:

Paddy

Welcome to the board, Paddy, very nice to meet you.

I am very glad to hear you clarify this. If you are on the DDP, you have paid for it -- either paid OOP for the plan, or for the lucky folks who got it free, they still paid rack rate for their room, etc. And...well, they sort of "paid" for it by taking the risk of booking their vacation during hurricane season :rotfl2: But it's not free food...it's a package deal, that yes, is a good deal for many families.

I am curious about something, and maybe as a server at Disney you can explain. Many people have said they've noticed more expensive menu items disappearing from menus, or being removed specifically during periods of free dining. You just mentioned that cost is the reason the add-a-tail option is being removed from Cap'n Jack's menu. Why don't the restaurants just exclude certain items from the DDP, and make them items that would need to be paid for OOP? Several restaurants already do this -- the sushi at WPC for example, is considered an entree on the plan, not an appetizer. Tangierine in Epcot limits the DDP dessert to baklava only, but other dessert items are still available for purchase, and they completely exclude one of their entrees from the plan, but it's still on the menu. Why would items be totally removed from the menu so no guests can order them, if they would make money for the restaurant?

But I must say as a server at Disney I love it. But PLEASE don’t tell Disney that.

OK, I won't tell them  But why wouldn't you want them to know? Is it sort of a general consensus that the servers dislike the DDP? And if so, why do you personally love it? We've had a few discussions about that subject here -- I'm not a server, but I've worked in food service before, and currently work in the customer service field. My thought was that the DDP is probably a hassle, more work to ring up the tickets correctly, maybe sometimes makes customers more likely to argue for something that they can't have -- but as a server, I would like that a decent tip is guaranteed, perhaps an excellent tip if I provide very good service and the party is motivated to leave me even more. Also, I would think that the DDP would encourage guests to order much more food, and much more expensive menu items -- which in turn would also increase the potential tip. However, I may be way off base (I often am!) So, I'd love to hear your insights on this...

Unfortunately, I won't be trying out Cap'n Jack's because DH is allergic to shellfish, and I'm terrified of anything with more than four legs :scared: :rotfl2:

I can certainly understand CJ wanting to remove the addon from the menu but as another poster said they could just exclude it from the DP patrons so it would still be available to those not on the plan. Just a guess but doesn't CJ get more offsite & locals that are not on the plan?

We may still meet, 6/23 is a Saturday::drinking1

RE: Why don't the restaurants just exclude certain items from the DDP?

We are pushing for this, with the Add a tail. But it’s up to locations management.

RE: OK, I won't tell them

But why wouldn't you want them to know?

In my opinion, Because, Disney believes we make to much money. Disney is looking to take away the grat from the DDP. Management hates the fact that we (servers/bartenders) make 25 to 50% more than they do. And only work 30 to 35 hours a week vs. 45 to 50 hours for management.

RE: Is it sort of a general consensus that the servers dislike the DDP? And if so, why do you personally love it?

We (not so much me but servers in general) did not like it in the past, a couple of years ago, but most like it now. Why, it took the plan to become popular for the server to like it. On the Plans, we receive the grat on our pay check not nightly. Before the plans became popular, we would not see the money due to the fact it was eaten up in back union dues, taxes and insurance. Before, we had to use our vacation and bonus payments to pay union dues, taxes and insurance. Now that the plans make up about 50 to 75% of the servers income, most like it. We get a big FAT Check every week, for most servers on Disney; incomes have increased by 30 to 50%., in the past 2 years.

Personal I have always liked the plans. The guest on the plans always order more then the non-plan guest. Most guests feel that it is to their benefit to be on the plan. As do I. You as a guest on the DDP are willing to try something you would not normally try, if you had to pay cash for it.

No the DDP is not a hassle, the Stone Age computers the Disney uses are the PROBLEM.
You are right about some guest do try to take advantage of the DDP but, most servers are willing to work with them. If the guest are too malicious. Pissing off your server will ruin your night.

RE: However, I may be way off base (I often am!) So, I'd love to hear your insights on this...

No you are correct in your thoughts.

RE: Many people have said they've noticed more expensive menu items disappearing from menus, or being removed specifically during periods of free dining.

If you are referring to the most recent menu changes at Disney that’s because Disney under went a global menu change in Nov, 06. Disney said “trying to have healthier options”.
I don’t believe Disney changes the menus for the Free DDP. I know that we (Cap’n Jack’s) did not.

RE: Why would items be totally removed from the menu so no guests can order them, if they would make money for the restaurant?

C.J’s only removed “add-a-tail” from the menu. We have been told the “paying” guest can order it, at $12. But we have to tell you about it. The DDP guest can order it as well but have to pay for it. To clarify starting in a week or two, the “ADD A TAIL” will NOT be available on the DDP with any entrée; YOU have to pay for it.

That sounds reasonable to me. I don't mind paying extra if something my son and I really want. When we used the plan during our last trip, we both wanted crab legs when we had dinner at Cape May Cafe. I believe I paid $13.00 extra.

Paddydax thank you so much for giving us a waiter's view.:sail: I've been very curious about a lot of that info. I'm very glad to hear that waiters in general won't view DDP customer's a second class citizen's or something. :thumbsup2 That was my fear.
